The Polar Express is a 2004 American computer-animated Christmas musical fantasy adventure film[1] co-written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, based on the 1985 children's book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg, who also served as one of the executive producers. The film features human characters animated using live-action motion-capture animation. It tells the story of a young boy who, on Christmas Eve, sees a mysterious train bound for the North Pole stop outside his window and is invited aboard by its conductor. The boy joins several other children as they embark on a journey to visit Santa Claus preparing for Christmas. The film stars Tom Hanks, also one of the film's executive producers, in multiple distinct roles, with Daryl Sabara, Nona Gaye, Jimmy Bennett, and Eddie Deezen in supporting roles.

Please watch Lost in Space... Its an amazing story
Someone pointed out to me that the girl also has her doubts about Santa, it's just shown super subtly to where it flies under the radar.
How? By the "Are you sure?" thing.
Sure, she SAYS she believes in everything, but there's still a little voice in the back of her head saying, "Are you sure?"
That's why she freezes up whenever someone says that. What if she was wrong this whole time? What if all this is meaningless?
So when they're at the North Pole, and she finally says, "Absolutely!", that was the film's way of telling us she now finally truly believes it's all real.
That's why she didn't initially hear the bells.
One thing I've caught about this movie over the years:
When they're walking around the north pole, they hear the elves talking about the last present having candy cane paper and a green number 7 bow.
You're supposed to think that it's Billy's present, but eventually, you notice so is Hero boy's present.
Leaves you to wonder: did Santa know he was going to lose the bell?
I can’t get over how beautiful this film is. Like, this film already explores the true meaning of Christmas in such a beautiful way- the themes, the visuals, the music, everything.
But then they tie in the true meaning of the holiday with its implications for lower class families and explore class in a far more nuanced way than… almost any other children’s entertainment I’ve seen? And instead of using this to completely reject the idea of presents as the commercial side of Christmas, they showcase the symbolism of presents and true gift giving through the bell and Billy’s gift. Teaching kids what presents should be about.
You know that by the time Josh Groban’s beautiful vocals hit, I’m a bawling mess.

My son watched this movie over and over again for about two years. This year he doesn't seem interested in watching it. Luckily this year I have an almost 1yo to show it to as well. This movie is just so full with Christmas vibes.
I saw it in the theaters with my dad and sis. I knew literally nothing about it besides growing up with the book.
My sister still maintains to this day she's scared of marionettes because of THAT scene in this movie.

Awe, I love that you love this movie because it is a childhood favorite of mine, actually it's a tradition with my grandma so it will always hold a special place in my heart. But every other person I have seen or met that watched this movie, dislikes it or makes fun of it or just thinks it's scary? Which yeah some of it is a little weird ngl lol but I love it!
Also the kid with glasses has no name and in the credits is known as "the know it all kid" haha! (Actually the only character that does have a name is Billy.) Okay, watched it all and yeah...I loved your thoughts at the end.
Might be the only movie I prefer over the book. How they turned a five minute story into a gorgeous masterpiece like this is incredible.

I love this movie so much! I always try to watch it every year. The animation! The cinematography! THE MUSIC! It gives me chills every time. This movie is so nostalgic for me, such a classic.

I remember when I was in 4th grade, we went to the IMAX theater to see The Polar Express as a field trip back in 2004 during the Christmas season, it was a glorious time.
Tom Hanks was actually supposed to do all of the roles, but he had to pull back because he was exhausted.

I love how they used motion capture in this movie. Its such a great movie. It’s amazing how Tom Hanks did the physical acting for 6 characters. He played Hero Boy(facial expressions), the Father, Scrooge puppet, Hobo, Conductor and Santa Claus. My family has done the Polar Express train ride at our local train museum every year after thanksgiving. They have the hot chocolate dancers come through, the hobo pop in and out and Santa handing out a bell (first gift of Christmas) to everyone on board.
I used to be in a choir group a couple years ago, and we went around nursing homes (like 6) during Christmas time and we sung the hot chocolate song
One of the things I love especially from this movie is there's not a bad guy really. There aren't any real antagonists and the plot still manages to flow through without getting uninteresting. They're just kids on a magic train to the north pole

My mom and I covered that. She said if a train showed up at my house going to North Pole, etc. getting on it was fine. Never mind how realistic that was.

What I liked best about this movie was the polar Express hot chocolate! Never found out who made it and after six months never found it fresh again. Love the way this movie was done. I miss you in plaid. Have a safe and sane week and see us on the other side.

The kids are all roughly 8 years old. The movie is set in about 1964, and people grew up faster. For example adolescence was over at about 17 where now it can run on to as old as 29. Back then being married with a kid on the way and saving for a mortgage down payment at age 25 was not at all unusual. The cluies are all there, the main character narration even confirms this in the final monolog where he says he is old now, about age 50 in 2004.

When my older brother was little, my dad took him to go see this movie thinking it was gonna be a wholesome Christmas movie about trains. They weren't expecting the creepy hobo dude and the creepy elves. One thing that always bothered me whenever I watched this movie on TV is:
Everyone knows ELVES WEAR GREEN! WHY ARE ALL THOSE ELVES WEARING RED? But I always loved Holly, the little black girl in this movie, just like Stephanie. I always thought she was so pretty, especially because she looks so real

This film is one of the most Christmas-y movies I've ever seen. It's a fun theater movie, too, what with the train shots and all. But I'd pay full price for a version where someone has fixed all the creepy human models using today's tech. They really skeeve me out.
With Motion Capture animation I recommend Disney’s A Christmas Carol that starred Jim Carrey.
