Christmas is almost here! So I wanted to watch the Netflix original animated film Klaus before the holidays were over. Klaus was such an unexpected surprise! I had heard it had great reviews, but I really knew nothing about the plot going into watching it. I love Christmas movies. There's always a number of classics that I rewatch every year. This movie is definitely being added to that list.
Klaus is a 2019 English-language Spanish 2D-animated Christmas comedy film written and directed by Sergio Pablos in his directorial debut, produced by his company Sergio Pablos Animation Studios and distributed by Netflix. Co-written by Zach Lewis and Jim Mahoney, the film stars the voices of Jason Schwartzman, J. K. Simmons, Rashida Jones, Will Sasso, Neda Margrethe Labba, Sergio Pablos, Norm Macdonald, and Joan Cusack. Serving as an alternate origin story of Santa Claus independent from the historical take of Saint Nicholas of Myra and using a fictional 19th-century setting, the plot revolves around a postman stationed in an island town to the Far North who befriends a reclusive toymaker (Klaus).

@@Chillautumndays There IS evidence to support this, albeit anecdotal.
In the end, when the wind is blowing at Klaus, he closed his eyes, and said "I'm coming, my love..", so either the wind IS Lydia and she's calling for him, or he accepted his death and reincarnation as Santa Claus.

I can't watch Klaus without quietly crying, it's just impossible. Immediately eclipsed every Christmas movie made in the past 20 years for me. Go figure, it's the same director who made the kids from the first Despicable Me these wholesome vessels for love (forget the rest of those movies though after the Minions took them over) and of course THIS movie shares in that ability to make the children the focal point of change in the town. It really is just the simple kindness shown time and time again in this movie that gets me. The subversion of the little girl learning to spell her name and wanting to learn MORE in such stark contrast to what you expect...
I just adore how the movie doesn't hold back at showing this bleak, violent, probably murderous world of cynicism and sarcasm and jaded people... and we watch as it all starts to give way to heart, kindness and generosity.
I'll watch it every year if I can help it.

•It's Scandinavian-influenced and the Scandinavian nations are still monarchies.
•You missed that part; the ultimatum from his father. He has a year to deliver and stamp 6,000 letters or be cut off from the family wealth.
•It's heavily implied to be the spirit of his late wife Lydia, but I'm good with calling it the Spirit of Christmas.
•When describing the film to my parts, I told them the town had two families and one was named the Hatfields. If you don't known about the Hatfields and McCoys, something's wrong with you.
•In leu of Elves, Klaus has the Sami to help him in his workshop.
•Margu was one of my favorite characters too. The best part being the filmmakers found a 8-year-old fluent Sami girl to voice her, so you are actually hearing the Sami language.
•This will be a holiday classic that we show our children and their children show their children.

This is slowly becoming one of my favourite Christmas movies. I love how they worked in all the typical things that you associate with Christmas and Father Christmas, like the coal in the stocking and how they came to use reindeers. I literally showed this to my dad the other day and I said to him, 'It's a little weird at first, but it becomes more heartwarming as you go along." At the end he was like, "I get what you mean about it being weird at first". 😆

Klaus: fully animated in 2D, took four/five years to make, had over 40 animators and 300+ employees, an entirely independent movie, fully established, fleshed out characters, a compelling story and narrative.
Toy Story: just because it's made by Pixar makes it automatically great.
Look, I absolutely adore Pixar (except for Cars 2 and The Good Dinosaur) but if the Oscar's are just giving out their awards in cereal boxes like that, then movies like Klaus should deserve more recognition.

Hell yeah to both! I'd also strongly recommend Avatar the Last Airbender (show, NOT the movie for the love of God!), And since Sokka's VA is in The Dragon Prince, I'd recommend that show too while we're at it!

I think one of the best things about the film, was that they got and use real children for the voices
makes them sound more genuine and of course cute.

    Santa wants pictures of Spider-man!
I know it'd probably be better to say Klaus wants them, but Santa just makes the line funnier.

This film was 2D animated digitally, but used a process of tools to 3D render shapes and lighting as reference for the artists and animators.
Whereas on the flip side, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a 3D animated movie that was designed and processed to look 2D.

Very similar to Joulutarina, especially the finale.
Operation Christmas Drop, Journey back to Christmas, The Santa Clause (1994), Elf (2003), Home Alone, Miracle on 34th Street, Borrowed Hearts, Sons of Mistletoe, Northpole and Northpole: Open for Christmas

in Myth if a human achieves a certain amount of true greatness and selflessness they can be invited to transcend to a higher plain of existence instead of dying which is what i think happened with Klaus at the end

If Jesper doesn't get the specified amount of letters, his father is throwing him out onto the street. It's not a problem to the people of Smeerensburg, or us. It's a problem for Jesper.
Margu is actually speaking the Sami language, and what she's saying is often pretty funny. Her 'conversation' with Jesper is a prime example. You can find a translated dubbed version of that scene here on TH-cam. It's pretty clear she understands english, just doesn't speak it from that conversation. XD.

Here is probably not the right place to say this but I just watched your "Legend of Korra" reactions and wanted you to know that, as far as I know, there exists a book 5 in comic form.
I would love to see it animated one day. We would see Korra and Asami's trip to the spirit world. Maybe you could do a reaction to the graphic novel of book 5?
