A good year for Waxwings. Waxwings in Yorkshire with the OM-1 and the 150-400mm Lens

  • 2023 looks like it is going to be an invasion year for one of our most colourful winter visitors, the Wawing. They usually start off in the north of the U.K. and find their way south. I go half way to met them in Yorkshire.
As ever they spend a lot of time in urban areas where they find the berries they like to feed on.
I use the OM-1 camera with the 150-400mm lens and due to the poor light use 3200 iso.

Interesting-looking bird. They look like a cross between a goldfinch and Eurasian Jay.

Great birds to take picture off.

What you need, is not a big flock of Waxwings, but a small group. About 12 years ago, there was a small group of about 5 Waxwings eating Sorbus berries, on some trees around a car park. They were there from January, to early April.

  • @cliftonwhittaker260

Mike, two times I have been fortunate enough to discover a flock of cedar waxwings feeding and have them all to myself all morning. Both times they were feeding in mulberry trees so ravenously that they didn't even notice people walking by. One other time I went back to one of those mulberry trees to photograph the waxwings and a huge flock of starlings came in and took over. No pictures that day. But I did take a few of the mulberries for myself.

Four were caught by ringers on Gower a couple of weeks ago, and they have been seen in North Wales, heading down to Mid Wales. Here's hoping they come in some numbers down to Swansea, which they last did about 2017. Another great video, Mike, of one of my favourite birds!

Beautiful footage and stills Mike . We get Redwing and Fieldfare down here in the South but the Waxwings take longer to come down the Country. Anyway that is my excuse for never really catching the Waxwing . In theory and in Asda car parks a very common bird, but for me a no show ! I still have no decent shots of the Waxwing ! Thanks for sharing the Masterclass. I will no exactly what to do now if I am ever in the right place at the right time 🙂

Thanks again for another inspirational video.
I stumbled upon Cedar waxwings here in Maryland USA. They seem to eat the top berries first and work their way down. On day two they ate the berries at eye level. I also have the OM1 and 150-400mm and filmed a pair swapping a berry between each other over several minutes until a 3rd waxwing tried to join in without success. Is this mating behaviour?

Arrived with us at end of October, about 2 to 3 weeks earlier than other years. Flock of over 1000 regular around the houses where I live. Short walk and they were there. Had one flock on a tree separating in two groups, one would come down to Rowan and feed, when they returned the other group came down. This year has been the most plentiful of the birds I have seen. There are still a few around. What I am not seeing if Redwings, they are normally on the go with the Waxwings. Great video and keep up the captures. Merry Xmas when it comes from me here in Elgin , Scotland.
