      Turning down the lakers and celtics to stay at duke isn't really that hard of a choice. Coach k is definitely unique but at Duke he is a god. He would have to win at least 10 championships with the lakers to get the same clout he gets at Duke.

    • @brianvuong97
      @brianvuong97 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      He has a lifetime contract a Duke. In 2004, the Lakers were good, but the tires were bound to come off with Shaq and Kobe. I think he wouldve only lasted a few seasons before they canned him. Plus Kobe’s team from 2005-2008 were subpar to say the least. In hindsight, it’s safe to say Coach K made the right decision.

    I think it says a lot about Coach K that when Team USA sends the the best American NBA players to the Olympics that they choose him over an NBA coach. Those All-Stars respect the hell out of Coach K.
    Think about it, without even leaving Duke he has coached Kobe, LeBron, Durant, Westbrook, Anthony Davis, Carmelo, Kevin Love, Dwight Howard, Harden, CP3, Wade, and Bosh in actual competitive games.
    And he was an assistant on the original dream team, so he has also worked with Magic, Bird, Jordan, Barkley, etc.

      I tried looking it up and one source said he made over $130,000 every two weeks in 2004, which is about 3.3 million dollars a year, and the Laker offer was apparently 40 million over 5 years, or 8 million a year, and part ownership. So more than doubling his salary, but I think the ownership stake may have been the thing he saw as generational.

    Wish coach k would take the short drive from Raleigh to Charlotte and coach the Hornets maybe turn around their trash record. I live in Charlotte and even in the Kemba bear they never got to the conference semis.... :( help your local NBA squad in need. PLEASE RETURN US TO OUR 90S GLORY

      He was saying he got hired for 40K at Duke and was comparing it to the starting pay the Lakers were offering at that point in his career...He was very much making a comfortable 7 figures in 2004 with those championships under his belt

    College ball is different from the NBA back then. The stakes are way higher and the women way hotter in the NBA back then.

    I think it’s a good thing when college coaches decide not to pursue nba coaching positions. Imagine coaching so much ego, and probably having way less control over the steering wheel than in college. But then, still be blamed and fired for having a mediocre/poor season. There have been one too many college basketball coach greats who’ve failed as nba coaches.

    If you want to be 100% honest most of these top college coaches legacies would be ruined if they went to coach an nba team. Way different dynamic and you aren’t getting the best players in the league every season.

    Man, I can't tell you how much I hate Duke..... only because I knew somehow they would always leave the building with a 'W'. Even if they were down by quite a big margin, you just know they will make a comeback for the win, and that annoyed me to no end. Hahaha.
