Enjoy a video where I showcase how horrible combat with a unicorn can be! The best way to use unicorns is to treat them less like holy allies and more like pompous and entitled annoyances. Makes me think of Excalibur. In the same vein, they make absolutely incredible mounts if you ever get the unrealistic chance.

Actually you have it backwards, Pass without Trace'd creatures cannot be tracked by anything except for magical means. So things like Locate Creature, Scry, and arguably Hunter's Mark might allow a party to track them. Still incredibly difficult given the range of the teleport.
And its why Pass Without Trace is a broken Spell
Even when enemies have Magical Tracking Devices you still have really good way to attempt at surprise attack

Unicorns won’t even be affected by Hypnotic Pattern because they’re immune to the charmed condition

One thing you overlooked is that Unicorns are *Immune to the Charmed condition*. So Hypnotic Pattern would've done a grand total of fuck all.

@@grilledleeks6514 Tuckers Kobolds proved a long, long, long time ago that properly preparing combatants can outclass adventurers if they try hard enough.
Especially when they're properly motivated and don't mind collapsing the cave behind themselves.
Fun encounter: An Enchantress needs you to feed medicine to a stubborn unicorn who refuses to take it because it tastes like someone put garlic powder in a cherry cough drop.
This is going directly into the fey adjacent campaign I'm going to be running-it starts with Wilds Beyond the Witchlight and shifts into my own thing at level 8.

That would be perfect alongside my preferred Czech-speaking dwarves and Finnish-speaking elves.
Heres some potential ways to make this encounter more interesting.
1. The unicorn cares. If the party is amoral and just threatens to bully the unicorn's animal friends or burn down the forest it protects, they might be able to goad it into fighting or compromising, although since theyre considered the darlings of the universe and instantly inspire awe in most people it'd be considered pretty bad taste and might literally turn the entire forest on the party and town by extension.
2. Unicorn bits. A unicorns hair (as well as blood and a sliver of horn so long as it lives) can be used for components. Consider using that and the unicorn, feeling for their plight, will point them to another being of who can use it for a potent potion.
3. Bring the king. Just grab or sneak the king out and ask the unicorn. It is here i will note they are shy and might just bugger off, but seeing someone obviously hurt could prompt them to help. Finally.
4. Just find a virgin. The party goes out looking for someone innocent to bring to the forest in hopes of luring the unicorn out.
There are some other alternatives like having them do a quest for the unicorn as a favor but those are more standard "guy a will do your thing if you help out with guy b."
If the party kills the unicorn, they will be fucked, and the king will be fucked as well, fom the DMG unicorn entry, "Wizards can work powdered unicorn horn into potent potions and scroll ink, or use it as a component in eldritch rituals. However, any creature that takes a role, no matter how small, in slaying a unicorn is likely to become the target of divine retribution."
They party will get put on every good deity's hit list since they killed it, and the king will as well since he was a beneficiary of the unicorn's death.

So...these things can be summoned by the Wild Magic table, and jokingly became the occasional impromptu healer of one of my tables due to the Sorcerer summoning one MULTIPLE SESSIONS in a row.

Say any of you familiar with the kirin? In mythology, it’s just a Korean unicorn that shows up at the deathbed of powerful people, but in monster hunter, they decided to give it thunder (lightning) element. Which makes its fight become the closest thing to bullet hell monster hunter as the pretty lights practically need a warning for epileptic people.
So instead of having just a regular unicorn in my campaign, Im having them hunt a kirin. Pretty much all the bs this video entails but it will smite you with the power of sick bass-y drops to paralyze you before getting away.
There are actually kirin stats in 5e. I think they're in the first Mordenkainen book

Kirins are in DnD, they are way more hardcore than Unicorn.
monster hunter, a japanese game, probably uses the japanese Kirin, which is either a dragon or a giraffe, depending on how mythical they're feeling that day.
Ah, Unicorn hunting. Still recall the time one of my players, a barbarian obsessed with weapon crafting, wanted that unihorn to make a spear. He proceeded to get the party into a wild chase and had this long plan to basically one shot the unicorn in a single hit so it didn't escape.
It worked, but the druid circle that lived nearby wasn't too happy about it and ended up returning the city they were staying in to nature for their misconduct

It’s true that Unicorns can only be found out here in the Pacific Northwest. Unfortunately they’re invasive, as they were brought by colonizers, (they originate in Scotland) but went extinct in their native range. Unicorn encroachment on what little woodlands we have left have really negatively affected bigfoot populations here. It’s been a nightmare for the WSDOC (Washington State Department of Crytpozoology) and OSDOA (Oregon State Department of Arcana) to manage.
I’ve heard that British Columbia has handled them better, but I’m not Canadian and don’t trust their governments due to the influence of Canadian Geese.

He'd do like 1d4+1 damage once per turn on a hit and cause the party to need to roll a d20 whenever they pick up anything and on a 1, a strong gust of wind materializes blowing the items you tried to pick up 1d10x1d10 feet away.

The only effective use is his wind power, which if you want to have, you have to have his inept weak form out tagging along.

And fun fact, a lot of Poison resistant enemies are Celestials, Abberation, Constructs, and Undeads
Unicorns make perfect sense to me as Celestials. They are wise, pure people who happen to have the bodies of horses. The only difference between them and angels is shape, and I don't know if angels procreate.
There is also the fact that unicorns have a regional effect. This consists of open flames not being allowed to exist, healing done by good aligned creatures to good aligned creatures to always heal for the maximum, creatures native to the unicorn’s domain to have an easier time hiding; they have advantage on all Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide, and all good-aligned creatures under the effect of a curse have the curse suppressed while in the area.
I assume that the unicorn is a (good aligned) creature native to its own domain, so it would always heal itself for the maximum, and it would always have advantage on Stealth checks, making it nigh impossible to find save for certain Divination spells like Locate Creature and Scry.
The phrasing of the regional effects seems to imply they are optional, but heck, for a CR5 creature with only like 60 hit points, might as well include all of them
and when they do catch one, they're prolly not ready to fight a planetar with a possie of angels
Fun Fact! Until the late 19th/early 20th century most dictionaries had unicorns listed with their alternate, and still quite common, names. Rhinoceros. Unicorns do exist, they're just much more chonky and less magicky than people realize.

Unicorns are immune to the charmed condition in the first place so, given the charmed unicorn didn't actually get a turn it could've acted on Hypnotic Pattern or not, the encounter would play out exactly the same.

I was playing a homebrew pathfinder game and I made a character where I made a character with 200ft of move speed as long as he is chasing someone while he is raged and he killed a unicorn
Having a unicorn as a warlock patron would be really cool.
One of my favourite characters in my game is an NPC called Sparklefoot. She's a unicorn that I nicked from a reddit post years ago, but basically she provides celestial warlock powers to people that have messed up and helps them out in shitty situations in order to kinda contractually oblige them to do good, and slowly warp them rounf to being better people more genuinely.
The fiend Warlock turned to her for help in extracting his soul from an agreement he made with Bel under duress, and he swapped over to celestial, before dying two sessions later, before she had a chance to get his soul. Now, many levels down the line the party are on a mission to infiltrate Bel's fortress to try and rescue his soul that is being tortured for his disloyalty.
In short, while its not a traditional use of unicorns, I love it.
You can easily catch a unicorn by sneaking up on it before it gets biblically mistook. Of course now the king just has a big grey armored paperweight that can't heal anything.
Imagine a party of desperate, frustrated adventurers hosting a beauty pageant in your small town to try and find decent unicorn bait because they just can't catch the damn thing

See while it is hard to catch a Unicorn physically, you can forever trap them emotionally and financially by introducing them to Gacha games.
They have a chance to blind your creature stack, too.
My first Unicorn encounter as a DM was due to the wild magic sorcerer randomly summoning it.
Then the same sorcerer cast a spell that went on it's own way and chained on the unicorn.
The unicorn kicked the sorcerer and teleproted away.
Then I'm running demigod unicorns too now.
But I find it hard to roleplay the crazy that's the feywild.
As a resident of the Pacific Northwest, I can confirm and assure you that the place does not exist. Except when it's on fire.

Our dungeon Master wamted to tease us with a unicoen too . Our barbarian one hit killed it Guts style and cleaved its head of in one swing . Our barbarian has insane crit role luck . Not to crit but to role insane damadge when he does .
ran a evil unicorn as a high-ranking BBEG who was convinced he was A Goodguy but after an Archdevil secretly saves his life and provides a prosthetic black horn, the unicorn looses any concept of good and evil so he might seem gentle but when he attempts any good he takes that good act so over the line its often fatal ...litteraly killing people with intended kindness.

Fun fact: In the old myths, you didn't actually need a virgin maiden to bait a unicorn, you could just dress Baron Skullfuck of Murder up as one & it'll somehow fool the unicorns (don't ask why, I'm unaware of any myth that explains it)

Space Unicorns.
I played a grappling abjurer wizard with the tavern brawler feat.
I called him an abjurist pugilist.
I cast private sanctum for a 4th level slot ahead of time over 10 minutes then for a action used green flame blade + grapple on a bonus action from tavern brawler.
I dragged the unicorn into the sanctum & proceeded to impale it to death with it's horn that the DM said broke off from my prior improvised weapon=rock for flavour- quest.
The DM was so impressed that at level 7 I captured & killed a unicorn single handed which I proceed to eat so the DM gave me Shimmering Shield as once/day use.
Party got magic items but I got a +2ac for me & one other player for 1 turn a day.
He wanted to give me healing touch at 1st but healing & curing both disease & poison as wizard is to much.
A unique reward is nice but some abilities are just over powered for certain classes to get access too.
Private sanctum prevent teleportation & if set up is often being more useful then most might think.
Not an every day spell but when the opportunity arises it's 6 odd area effect have invaluable use.
I have precast then used party member to attract enemies in to the area as ''Sound can't pass through the barrier at the edge of the warded area.''.
the divided & conquered enemy can scream & call for help but no one can hear their pleas!
My DM's often think my alignments should be Evil chaotic & not neutral chaotic but fighting intelligently isn't evil but just sensible.
@@arnijulian6241Personally, I would probably rule that killing and eating an intelligent, ageless, god-blessed forest guardian was an act of evil, assuming the player didn't have a very good reason to think otherwise. Not enough to demand a change in alignment in and of itself, but still evil.
Your wizard sounds radical though; I freaking love grappling but I've never used it as anything besides a fighter.

Sailor background abjurist pugilist & in his mind/character how is eating a unicorn any different to a horse.
Sailors, hunters & myself have eaten raw fish as well as raw dear along with other cultures eat raw horse like the Japanese ''Basashi''.
Human variant tavern brawler take (warlock magic initiate) for armour of agathys at level 4.
I have select spells that require no more then 16 intelligence that I never raise said stat focusing on constitution to 16 & 13 strength.
Try to get belt of giant strength or similar as fun times when the wizard has the highest strength & a good reason to use it.
Salt marsh campaign hence why I chose sailor though DM made a bunch of random encounters & 1 was unicorn for sort of side quest as new player came for a session so had a pause from the main story sort of.
His friend with benefits & she likes fey-pretty stuff.
I humoured it till I ate the unicorn.
My sailor had a charisma of 8 & part of his story was how is was so innately dislikeable!

Unicorns can teleport and hide, but Nightmares can basically run through the fifth dimension and just clip out of reality, where almost no one can actually follow them.

I want to have a character with a celestial unicorn patron and a little girl warlock and she gushes and loves the unicorn and likes brushing it and the unicorn is just begrudgingly trying to keep this silly kid alive because it liked her mum and is acting as a glorified babysitter

And here I was expecting a vid about a University founded by a group of Nu-Metal musicians turned educators.
My favorite encounter with a unicorn was during the middle of a really tense encounter; an extremely powerful bounty huntet had been sent to drag my character back to her parents, and was trouncing me, so I tried to cast pyrotechnics to make a smoke cloud to escape. HOWEVER the bounty hunter had a ring of spell storing, and counterspelled me before I got it off.
HOWEVER HOWEVER I procced wild magic, which summoned, you guessed it--a unicorn, who appreaed there looking confused. My character, being a goody-two shoes type, was like "pretty please can you help us escape?"
And a charisma check later the whole party just popped into thin air leaving the bounty hunter in the dust. A perfectly aligned set of rolls that still makes me laugh when I think about that bounty hunter standing there scratching his head.
D&D is not a game in which every creature has a fair chance to be like a silly human.

One of the few creatures I can't stand no matter the game system. In myth/legend the maiden has to be a virgin, Unicorns are the embodiment of the "Virtue" chastity. In modern media they are horses, but in lore and myth they are cloven hooved, have a beard and a long thin tail. Almost like a type of goat or deer. Poor Narwhals......

Most powerful beings in my fantasy world:
Faeries (invented magic, friends with god(s)
Daemons (one day were feeling selfish and decided to invent evil)
Dragons (some are literally demi-gods that can shape reality)
Angels (one day were feeling nice and decided to help the gods invent good)
and then
Unicorns: can just deicde to kill an entire army of mages because they feel like it, but they dont they save that for the daemons and the evil demi-gods. Also can erase evil from someone soooooooooooo-

Unicorns were a medieval analogy for Christ. Hence why only virgins could find them. So, pick and choose fairy tales, but this stuff goes farther back than Chainmail iterations.

I was going on a unicorn hunt once with my boneclaw buddy, and we caught one sleeping. It slept so long, and so heavily, I didn't even need to stealth.
