I went to see this show shortly after it opened and was fully expecting to witness a disaster, and by that I mean a show sinking, not a ship. Instead, I was totally blown away by the music. I didn't think it was a great show, but the music and orchestrations were so beautiful so sumptuous, the choral singing was so thrilling, and the solos, duets and trios were very moving. Still, this play was lucky it debuted in 1997. If it had debuted in 1998 with Ragtime an The Lion King in competition, there's no way it would have won Best Musical. Titanic was a good show. Ragtime was a great one (and it lost!).
The score is so beautiful. The book, however, is so full of winking foreshadowing and exposition, I hate almost every dialogue scene and just want them to get to the songs 😂
This was one of my absolute favorite musicals to perform. I wish I had gotten to see the original cast perform it on Broadway. Someday, my children will have the grandest exposure to arts that I always wish I had.
I got to see this on Broadway and it was fantastic. I don't know what I was really expecting, but this went above and beyond anything I was envisioning. I just wish they filmed it for release on DVD with the original Broadway cast.
My late husband had the honor of playing piano for this with his vocal students at a dinner honoring the composer Maury Yeston. One of the highlights of my love’s career.

also love the music- with a few exceptions i would cut while mounting- but the show needs good strong actors to make it work- and young when needed- and there is that SHIP!!!
