Even though you own the physical media, those cartridges have a lifespan. Either through physical use or their internal memory degrading. Being able to back this stuff up should be a consumer right and I'm glad more tools are being made to accommodate that. I agree that it's very expensive right now, but this is just the start of it. Nintendo is probably working on a firmware that detects Mig switch and/or changing how cartridges are encrypted/fabricated. So right know it can work with any game released on firmware 17 and down, but there's no guarantee it'll work with 18 and up. And they can force all devs to use new firmware for new games and updates. So this will be really interesting after some cat and mouse has been played by Nintendo and Mig Switch. Adding updates, DLCs and maybe mods to XCI is the number one feature I'd like to see coming, so if they ban the console, everything would still work offline.

4:51 the reason why the MIG Switch is like this is because that idea simply won't work anymore due to code signing. While I'm not that knowledgeable on Switch specific security, assuming Nintendo is at least up to the bare minimum, they're likely signing all games with a private key, which the public doesn't have. Hence why you also can't boot homebrew applications, even ones that would run fine at user level as it isn't code signed. My best guess as to why that worked on the DS is the DS either didn't have code signing or it was weak and easily bypassed.

    • @recordfumo
      @recordfumo 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I should note that if the MIG Switch was targeting homebrew Switches specifically, then I believe this would work since the code signing enforcement would be disabled, but they want this to work on stock switches as well since the vast majority of normal users don't mod their switch as disappointing as it may be.

Good video tho, really just commented to tell ya why lol

    • @SuperTort0ise
      @SuperTort0ise 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeah but it'd only work if you patched your switch with kip/sig patches (I think it's called that), so you'd be enabling pirate mode in order to play backups/homebrew, but with said patches you could just install them and be at the same risk of ban.
Over all what they decided on is the only thing that makes sense, I think if the card had like a capacitive button on it that'd make it far more useful, as it is switching games like this is just bad IMO.

I genuinely hope that they start marketing this better as a legal backup of legally bought physical cartridges. I think it would be much easier for them to find places to distribute, and there are absolutely no vendors here that sell them, along with it also having less repercussions. I just want to be able to get a digital copy of the games I ALREADY OWN, without having to worry about cartridge wear & tear. Also, as you mentioned, I would love to be able to bring my entire library with me when I head somewhere, there's multiple games I play through at the same time, and worrying about have I lost my entire library that costs hundreds of dollars and with no backup is just more reason to not play my switch. If I had the peace of mind that I can play MY OWN games without fear of losing all of them just because I'm forced to carry it around, I would be much more likely to use my switch. On-top of that, I would be much more likely to root for Nintendo as they're giving me good value, but also respecting that my games are my own to do with, as long as it's nothing that causes them problems.

I have one of those plastic little book things filled with Switch cartridges that I haven't even played just because I'm too lazy to dig it out and swap carts to play games. Much easier to just fire up a digital game. This is the main reason I've been far more into retro handheld emulators than any of my actual consoles lately. Part of me wishes they'd implement a ripping process to move games from the cart to the Switch itself similar to installing PC games back in the day where you'd need some sort of unique activation key or something.

If people start getting banned for playing pre owned games, then the only way they'll be able to buy games will be either through Nintendo digitally or by buying a brand new copy that Nintendo get paid for. Nintendo (and all devs) don't like the pre owned market as they get no money for re-sold games, so this could end up damaging that market

I think about a few things and recourse. If someone dumps a game and sells it on the used market, what happens to the person who buys the game?
    1) I think Nintendo has a threshold for banning that includes X instances of a duplicate title key. So two might not meet that threshold. Lightning may need to strike twice just to be online with the person at the same time, on the same server? I just don't know what tech Nintendo uses to really ban*
    2) If Nintendo WERE to band your console along with the other party (2 instances of the same game), just take them to small claims court and bring your copy of all your games and ask for damages and loss of use.
    3) If your copy was RAMPENTLY pirated and sold to you, then the same action (#2) would apply and I suspect Nintendo would buy you a new copy directly or through settlement, payment, and/or expectation that retail original copy is destroyed to prevent continued bans and continued litigation with you.
    4) If you don't have access to small claims in your state, then you would have to hire an attorney :( OR AG would get involved.
*I suspect at some point an Attorney will get involved and a class action would start. Through discovery, Nintendo would need to publicly disclose HOW they ban consoles and detect duplicate copies. At some point if this banning became widespread for the used market, Nintendo might be forced to disable banning based on duplicate title keys since they would have no reliable way to ban without effecting legitimate consumers.
Sidenote: My worry is really about the Switch 2 and if my old games will work on the Switch 2 and if this new backup will effect the backwards compatibility and if this banning will extend to the Switch 2. WORSE case is Nintendo drops all physical media from the Switch 2. Gosh I hope not. I like to own all my games so I can sell/buy/trade. One you go digital your rights evaporate on some levels.

I have about 80 physical switch games almost exclusively bought off sites like Vinted, Ebay and Amazon. Some are special editions, limited run, import, indie and in some cases quite rare. The Dumper is what interests me. I’m a 40yo gamer who has witnessed several online game stores close down over the years, so I always feel slightly nervous buying digital (unless it’s just silly cheap and I’m unsure of a game). The dumper is a good little tool as it gives me the security and benefits and protection of digital media without the worry of having to rely on a service (online) to acquire my game should I ever run into a situation where the original cart becomes lost, damaged or stolen.
The piracy problem isn’t a problem for now as the carts are too expensive to but. It’s almost as much as a new triple A titles, so seems redundant to counterfeit a game at the risk of getting your own switch banned.
Switch 2 if it’s capable of backward compatibility and the mig carts become cheaper due to other companies selling similar product then it might become an issue.

And ontop of all this nintendo probably sees this as an absolute win. Now a good portion of folks are probably paranoid and now that garuntees more folks will be buying new games instead of used. Nintendo already doesn't loke the used game market so this only helps them out.

I can play and switch my backed-up games from my Migswitch flasher by manually switching the games but it won't toggle through the games with the Alxum dock please help! I would really like to use the wireless control on this dock to cycle through the games on my Migswitch. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong, I also bought more than one Alxum dock just incase. It does work with regular switch games but just wont cycle through the migswitch backups

It's mig switch + 1 regular game. That's how youre supposed to switch through the games. SO slot in mig in slot one, and another random other game in slot two. Then you should be able to switch back and forth, give it a shot

@DammitJeff thank you for the reply. I did try this along with all other combinations. Also, I did rename each game folder by name but kept the formatting the same from the dump xxxxxxx.xci

This is actually good it reminds me of the old memory cards for PlayStation to backup you game progress, but if Nintendo would allow creating that, is not a complete loss, because by showing proof of purchase, can do a good result in backing up for those who enjoy their games with Nintendo, as long they show proven of buying the game shouldn't be a problem, I want one to save all the games I own and being able to play without switching cartridges is a win for the consumer and the company and for those who are capable of doing that can get paid as long the person has bought their games to be added to their own safe card is actually a win win 😅 if only i knew anyone near me a would go in a blink of an eye to get my games to be installed 😢 if only there was a way near me.

Great job on the video Jeff. U nailed it with pretty much everything. One thing I will note is that the migswitch does not run at the same speed as the original game cart. This was done in my video and compared across multiple Nintendo Switch consoles. The migswitch always performed slower. This could be used by Nintendo as a detection method. Just my two cents tho. Would love to have you on my podcast to discuss the migswitch!!

I see the benefits to having this. I have a somewhat substantial collection of hard copy games. I also have tons of digital purchases as well.
With the implied cart capacities limitations of the factory game cards and the expense of replacement.... it makes sense for someone like me that travels extensively for work to buy one of these so I don't have to risk my collection. If it gets stolen I loose 2 microSDs, a switch and the MIG card..... VS a factory game, and probably the case and who knows how many games in there too (up to 8 game cards +1 in system).
You can already see the advantages here.
For a modder tho.... once this card get hacked by the community there won't be the need to 'hot swap' the card to change games. Also, if this sidesteps server authorizations for your owned games.... thats of benefit as well. Because what sense is having a portable system and having to check and recheck authentication to play a game you legitimately own.
Thats gonna make all the world of difference!!!

I'd be interested in getting this just to keep a larger number of games on me when traveling without carrying my who collection as individual cartridges, but I can't bring myself to pay that price. I'll just stick to picking a few games I want to play when going out.

Subscribed, ty for the vid. My library consists of over 200 carts and I organize them in logical clumps inside a book that keeps them all together, this book is so valuable I don't let my kids look at it. I'm like a damn librarian tryin to keep track of my precious. My plan is to buy 10-15 micro sd cards (16-32gb) and consolidate those "clumps" into backup cards. The kids games go all on one sd, and I feel ok letting their asses go wild on their own systems. I ordered the combo on the first of the year from moddedhardware, hopefully my time is near.

as someone who owns a lot of physical switch games... I've always been envious of the people who bought digital copies off the eshop, and never need to switch cartridges. would love if nintendo would allow me to just save my copy to the switch for that same functionality. sadly, this flashcart might be the only alternative but I can't justify it. with the weird way of swapping between games, seems super annoying when you have 50+ you want to cycle through. plus, I play exclusively docked and don't want to get up every time. neat idea, but it's not quite "there yet" for me personally.

I like collecting Nintendo products (consoles and games), and this makes me very sad because buying used games is part of the hobby. With this, thanks to malicious people, buying a used game is a gamble on whether or not Nintendo punishes you for buying an original second-hand game. This sucks, it´s the downfall of collecting physical games👎

I will only buy flash cartridge like this only when Nintendo stopped supporting the Switch. This is the same reason why I didn't do homebrew or mod on my DS or 3DS until after Nintendo discontinued both of those and when I meant discontinued I meant discontinued as in no more physical support and no more digital support. It's just safer that way. Soon I would mod and do homebrew on my Wii U as well but for now the handhelds are my focus.

I'm getting it for a bit of both.
    - backup current library then buy/backup multiplayer games
    - "obtain" and play single player games while in airplane mode.
I use my lite since my V1 is hacked and OLED is the Zelda variant so having the MIG means less carts to bring and less chance of losing one if not multiple games.
I'd rather repay $60 for another MIG over losing multiple carts of games that may or may not be of the same value causing me to pay hella more.
