Some people might think "he'll never get his money back for restoring that chainsaw and selling it." That's not what this video is about it's about the skill this man has at taking what most people consider is junk and bringing it back to life.
The brand of this chainsaw is called "Дружба" or "Druschba" which means "Friendship". It was a very popular brand in the USSR and eastern europe. So popular in fact that the Romanians adopted "Druschba" as the name for chainsaw. So "Druschba" means friendship in russian and chainsaw in romanian. :)
Funny fact #2 ; ) In Russia angle grinder called - болгарка [ bolgarka ] :) Bulgarian, but it mean like a woman from Bulgaria. =)) Despite the name on the box - "uglo shlifoval'naya mashina (U.SH.M)" or angle grinder. The first copies of such machines came to the Soviet Union from the then friendly Bulgaria, where they were made. According to the habit of the people, a long and inconvenient name was tried to be shortened. As a result, a new word - "bolgarka" - became firmly in use.
Not uncommon for the piston top to be a domed on a two stroke but the combustion chamber usually has a bell shape where the edges squish the mix up towards the plug.
Actually, the last 2 stroke Lawnboy lawnmowers were hemis. Domed piston with hemispherical combustion chamber. Evil little buggers would seemingly cut through a bamboo patch!
Nothing like knowing that no matter where you are in the world there is someone else that respects their country, theirs roots, their heritage and the technology that got them where they are today good to see old technology get a new lease on life even if it's just a show piece instead of the work horse of yesteryear
Which goes to show that the average person in most countries are very little different from each other; it is the politicians which cause all the strife.
Too true. Our governments want to start fights (or, more recently, be uncomfortably friendly), but the rest of us are just trying to live and connect and understand and look at some chainsaws. It's barely 6 pm where I am! Wave at you from across the world!
You know a soviet machine was important/expensive when it got a not common painting, like orange, lime-green, or light blue painting. Usually it was hospital-green, or pool blue.. or the tractor red color.
95% of people will look at that and say: "Junk or Scrap metal " 4% will say "Cool! Rusty antique" And 1% (you) will say: "I can make this new again!" Great job!

@@MrArtem2033 There must be thousands upon thousands of bits and pieces of machinery lying about, not just in Russia but elsewhere too, just waiting to be bought back to life for another chance at what it did best in the day!
Dangerous - probably yes. Awkward - I don't think so. It was made with larger logs in mind and showcase in the end was made with poorly sharpened.. saw bits(?).
Some people just have a knack for taking things apart and putting them back together again. When I was a kid, I used to strip engines with my dad and I always knew which part went where because I was the one who took it apart. I had a 12 geared bicycle but the gears were internal in the back wheel. I used to routinely take it apart and do maintenance on it, no problem. Most things in life work in a logical and orderly manner, which means people with a logical and analytical mind finds these things simple. Just don't ask us to be artistic, our brains are logical and analytical and things like artistic thinking do not compute... :)
Alot of saws of this vintage look like this the biggest advances in saws over the years was simplifying them tho this one seems to be uniquely soviet in its design never mind this thing has a stamp of 1978 on it I assumed it was from the 40s to mid 50s till 78 you could get a morden styled saw on the other side of communism

Applying a layer of zinc on the part. I used the first battery with a zinc case as an electrode, the second (similar) was cut into pieces and dissolved in phosphoric acid. The bulb serves as a fuse.
@@Great_idea It's a brilliantly simple way to passivate the bar. I am definitely putting that one in my back pocket! For anyone wondering zinc (and a top layer of zinc oxide) is a very common method of passivating steel, most commonly called 'galvanized metal.'

Well done, my grandfather had one of these, and probably was still using it till about year 2000 perhaps and then he bought Husqvarna. Im sure its still somewhere in the farm. I miss my grandfather.
Awesome video. Nice restoration of cool technology. No way I could put all those pieces back together correctly. Clever chemistry knowledge while getting the rust off of the chain.👏👏
No idea, but the sheer weight should at least keep it in place. I doubt kickback is a big issue with that thing. Sure, the chain doesn't seem to stop immediately, and you should never be anywhere close to that thing unless you are the operator, but the operator himself should be relatively safe.
Great work! This guy has a kind of scarry working knowledge of chemicals and I'm more of a purist in matching the original colors. But great project overall and what a unique design. Thanks for sharing!

Spelled as "drujbă" :).

Funny fact #2 ; )
In Russia angle grinder called - болгарка [ bolgarka ] :)
Bulgarian, but it mean like a woman from Bulgaria. =))
Despite the name on the box - "uglo shlifoval'naya mashina (U.SH.M)" or angle grinder.
The first copies of such machines came to the Soviet Union from the then friendly Bulgaria, where they were made. According to the habit of the people, a long and inconvenient name was tried to be shortened. As a result, a new word - "bolgarka" - became firmly in use.
Holy crap, it has a hemispherical piston head.
This *_chainsaw_* is a Hemi.
Part from the engine... it cuts like shit compared to modern saws
@@victorstaniste8614 It's just a shitty design. Unwieldy
victor staniste cause they where shitty engineers
Not uncommon for the piston top to be a domed on a two stroke but the combustion chamber usually has a bell shape where the edges squish the mix up towards the plug.
Actually, the last 2 stroke Lawnboy lawnmowers were hemis. Domed piston with hemispherical combustion chamber. Evil little buggers would seemingly cut through a bamboo patch!
At last an old time restoration without sponsor's. Excellent.
So many languages in the comments. It's like the whole world is coming together to admire a man repairing a chainsaw! wonderful

Nothing like knowing that no matter where you are in the world there is someone else that respects their country, theirs roots, their heritage and the technology that got them where they are today good to see old technology get a new lease on life even if it's just a show piece instead of the work horse of yesteryear
Which goes to show that the average person in most countries are very little different from each other; it is the politicians which cause all the strife.
...and its 2.00 a clock in the night... this is crazy!???!?
Relay liked the original color
95% of people will look at that and say: "Junk or Scrap metal " 4% will say "Cool! Rusty antique" And 1% (you) will say: "I can make this new again!" Great job!

How in the world do you remember how to put all that back together again?? Amazing!

By looking back his own video?
Some people just have a knack for taking things apart and putting them back together again. When I was a kid, I used to strip engines with my dad and I always knew which part went where because I was the one who took it apart. I had a 12 geared bicycle but the gears were internal in the back wheel. I used to routinely take it apart and do maintenance on it, no problem. Most things in life work in a logical and orderly manner, which means people with a logical and analytical mind finds these things simple. Just don't ask us to be artistic, our brains are logical and analytical and things like artistic thinking do not compute... :)
@Ken Hernandez :-(
You can watch three things forever: fire burning, water flowing, and someone working
Wayyy to many parts just for a chainsaw. It looks more like an entire engine bay of a vehicle.
The level of knowledge and PATIENCE it takes for a job like this...bravo.

This is easily the most Russian thing I've seen in a while. Car battery + AA = electro plating? wtf?
Applying a layer of zinc on the part. I used the first battery with a zinc case as an electrode, the second (similar) was cut into pieces and dissolved in phosphoric acid. The bulb serves as a fuse.
@@Great_idea It's a brilliantly simple way to passivate the bar. I am definitely putting that one in my back pocket!
For anyone wondering zinc (and a top layer of zinc oxide) is a very common method of passivating steel, most commonly called 'galvanized metal.'

Is this not the most dangerous looking chainsaw ever built?
I had the same thought, but still thought it was beautiful. I wondered about bar oil too.
Probably carried a oil can with gear oil in it
No idea, but the sheer weight should at least keep it in place. I doubt kickback is a big issue with that thing. Sure, the chain doesn't seem to stop immediately, and you should never be anywhere close to that thing unless you are the operator, but the operator himself should be relatively safe.
My Russian comrades built it...
Soviet Russia built it, of course it's dangerous!!

Hey just for a recommendation as a mechanic you should put oil around the Piston before you put on the cylinder
Thanks for the advice, I will consider for the future.
Its a 2 stroke engine, usually at 5% oil to petrol that goes in the fuel tank premixed.

he takes his gloves off just to handle the sharpest part of the chainsaw
When wearing gloves, cannot work with such tools (although need to sharpen the chain differently)
