24 year old here. Recently (1-2 weeks ago) got rejected by a girl I was completely crazy about after 2 dates. She said she wanted to be 'just friends' which is the last thing my ego wanted to hear. Embarrassingly, my first thought was that if I had been a bit more muscular and 'dominant', I would not have been friend zoned, so I made the rash decision to start bodybuilding again (a style of training I find dull). Of course, I quickly realised this was super lame and returned to my preferred training method. I realised I was just trying to suppress the pain and shame I felt about my genuine social/professional/mental inadequacies (which probably played more of a role in her losing attraction for me) and that i should focus on those. Anyways, yesterday I went to a techno party to clear my head (something I actually enjoy doing) and ended up meeting another nice girl instead. I think being happy, in my element, and having no expectations helped. If nothing else, it reminded me why I enjoy life and went some way to flush the other girl (and the associated pain of rejection) out of my brain. Your videos often come out at weirdly timely moments in my life 😂

I've often asked myself, during the last 34yrs; why I still weight train. In the beginning, it was to improve my self-steem, then it was to supplement to my sport(s), then it was for aesthetics, then it was to prove to myself that I was still capable and in all that time I realised it was all and none of those things, all at the same time. I train because I fell in love with the fight against what I thought I could do...

I was literally just thinking to myself the other day about how other fitness influencers are doing people a disservice by not addressing these issues -- crazy coincidence. Thanks so much for being so outspoken on this. Male fitness youtubers, whether or not they are aware, are becoming huge role models for young men and boys around the world. While it's tempting to focus on one's one domain (e.g. physical fitness), the reality is that the people looking up to you do so holistically, and it's important to recognize the influence one has on them, and remind them that life isn't about any one thing in particular, but rather about rounding out one's sources of fulfillment.
Great job for doing that. That's what real leadership is :)

A counterpoint: Yes, getting swole for the girls directly is kinda sad and most likely wont work.
    However
If you are a shy guy, working out and gaining a bit of muscle mass will probably help you to feel better about yourself and be good for your confidence,

@@TheBioneer I think having hobbies that you are passionate about in general is great for boosting confidence because it keeps your mind busy on achieving things which can help improve confidence. Bodybuilding is just one of those hobbies where gaining muscle is the outcome (perhaps people associate confidence gains in outcomes rather than processes). As somebody who is still young, I wish I had explored other hobbies sooner instead of gaming too much and staying inside of my comfort zone. I don't think I could be confident now if I hadn't progressed from the person I once was a couple of years ago.

    • @dulappen494
      @dulappen494 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@TheBioneer I disagree. At least in my experience (in my own journey and what I've seen in my friends) Working out simply to look good inevitably causes a chain reaction of positive effects. You want to look good -> in order to look good you need to work out, so you learn how to train properly. You learn that recovery is important so you start to sleep more, you learn that nutrition is important so you start to eat healthier. You'll start to build size as well as just feeling better cause you're sleeping more and eating healthy. You'll start to have more energy and you'll start to be proud of your progress. You'll develop the realisation that through effort you can achieve your goals. This realisation then starts to apply to other aspects of your life.
All of these positive changes inevitably have a positive impact on your mental health and on your confidence which then helps not only with how you approach girls, but life in general.
And eventually somewhere along this process your goals start to shift naturally. You'll start to realise that looks aren't everything and you also want to have great cardio, or be flexible, or be able to do handstands/backflips, whatever it may be. All these things naturally develope despite starting simply to "impress the girls".

Actually, dude, there are a LOT of women who consider looks to be what gets your foot in the door, whether they admit it or not. It IS a key component in keeping a woman, too. Look at the divorce rate. Look at how so many women have to go "chase Chad", or chase excitement. If you're buff, you can help overcome that animal desire. There can't POSSIBLY be that many "horrible" women who aren't worth it in America. Yet you see it. So if the only good women don't care about looks, that leaves extremely few. I see women for what they are. They are what they are. The notion that good women don't care about looks is a cope. I used to think otherwise, but now I see it. I am 40 years old.
Looks are important when it comes to women. There are too few who don't care as much about looks, and oddly enough, a lot of them don't want children. So don't limit your mating pool to the point of only going for women who don't care about looks AND physicality. Dsting and mating IS a competition. It may end up leaving you without a family. I can see a lot of truth in what you say, and to a degree, it makes sense to not make women your only primary goal with training. But it is important. Helping your mom with groceries is certainly NOT the only reason to train. That is a bit of an overstatement.

I've learned to pursue what I care about, not what others care about and not for any reason other than enjoyment or a self-interested goal. I'm not nearly as productive as I used to be, but I'm much happier. It's a trap measuring yourself up to others achievements and goals, it leads to a never ending chase of trying to be "good enough".There's always gonna be people better than you and that's fine, self worth isn't measured by how well you stack up crowd.

Rather than telling them what they should do through my personal experience and how I turned my life around, I just show them through example and if they truely want to do so then they can come to me.
That's the reason why I train: to show to myself and my friends that age means nothing. That you can be old and still get shit done. And when I do have kids in the future, I can have the energy to manage them and stay in shape and not fall into the "dad bod" stereotype.

Personally, I train to no longer be weak.
7 years ago in school we had a 100m sprint during sports day and I almost came in last. The commentator even made fun of my pathetic attempt. It didn't traumatise me or anything but it was a wakeup call about how bad my physical condition was.
And 5 years ago, a lot of my classmates were having an arm wrestling competition and I came in dead last. Even the scrawniest guy in class was stronger than me. This coupled with not being able to do any pushups or pullups while others could do some made me finally take initiative to change.
After I started working out I started noticing my stamina, ability to carry groceries etc was going up. I was getting a wider shoulder and my face slimmed down causing me to have a slight "Glow up". This eventually lead me to having higher confidence and ability to put myself out there more.
Still got a long way to go, but I'm continuously trying to make progress.

While I agree for the most part, it's important to consider the type of training you do in order to attract a partner. I don't know many women who find big bodybuilders attractive, for instance. A lot of fitness dating advice tends to lead young men down this path.

    • @L33622

I agree with this comment. I think people are typically attracted to people that fit within their "circle". Fitness people like to stick with fitness people. Geeks like to stick with geeks. However, I have a suspicion (unfounded) that if you were to put overweight people against fit people then the modern, Western population would generally deviate towards fit people. However, people tend to isolate these characteristics and forget the numerous other characteristics in play that make somebody "attractive". Even if "people" did deviate towards fit people, there are cultures present and in the past that have found people that would be considered overweight attractive.

Weight training to build and maintain a strong, aesthetic and balanced physique should be just the starting line. Like showering every day and brushing your teeth. It's a basic component of life. Everyone should lift. You don't wash your clothes or maintain your hygiene "to impress others" its just what is and should be expected of a functional adult. Lifting and cardio are the exact same. These things should be intrinsically motivated rather than extrinsically, that is, for the approval of others. Even if no one else was around to smell your bad breath, you should still take care not to get halitosis because of the negative health consequences.
Additionally, being physically capable and mobile is a social responsibility, it prevents you from being a burden to others and allows you to help others more. This may be an extrinsic motivation, but it is a selfless one. My point is that there are sound philosophical underpinnings to training that, when discovered, can obliterate the need for such superficial motivations as you described in the video.

At the core, I train for health. Interestingly, I realised that simply training to be healthy was killing MY gains. I was moving, so of course that did count towards health, but I didn't feel that I progressed, and training was a bit of a chore.
But then I started thinking of myself as being useful/versatile/capable. My overall goal is still health, but adding the goal of general physical preparedness (not that I'm that fit at all yet), has given me something to strive for. I'm not training to be stronger than others or to win competitions; I'm training to be able to do something when needed. So the stronger I get, the more I can lift, carry, push, the higher I can jump and the faster and longer I can run, etc. For instance, when I reached the strength to deadlift my own body weight, my initial though was "I can lift myself - I can lift a human" (though that may not actually be the case, it's motivating for me).

I train so I can save my loved ones and myself in case of emergency, first. Second, so I can enjoy doing what I want and traveling while doing it. I don't want to turn down fun opportunities just because I am so unhealthy and unfit, I can't even begin to try.
Off topic, the beginning with the flirting faces reminded me of Chevy Chase in Caddyshack. Later, during that mirror shot near the end, I suddenly heard "Goodbye, Horses" and thought of the Silence of the Lambs scene. Thanks for the laughs!

My depression stopped having any effect on me, and even when it returns I'm able to power through it in a relatively short period of time. It seems to give fuel to my willpower

The love corner talk is right on... and part of the reason why I respect what you've built with this channel and sympathise with the man behind it. As a role model this is the kind of message the youth needs, unfortunately I think most who watch have more life experience, then again that isn't to say they've reached that conclusion already.... for me I have, but your advice could have helped me tons when I was young and seeking validation by chasing girls.

Thanks for this video man. I think you have an outside looking in perspective on this whole dating thing that is really needed, and because you aren't in the world of online dating you probably give much more healthy and sound advice. When you do things to impress people and you don't get their affirmation you can begin to resent them. Sometimes you have to save yourself and them the trouble but ultimately remembering that it is the experience of training that we must enjoy, because achievement and PRs are only moments of happiness not an everyday thing.

I could’ve done with watching this when I was a teenager doing only bicep curls, which not only didn’t attract girls but didn’t even give me biceps worth having. Although, being a teenager, I probably wouldn’t have paid any attention. Now at the grand old age of nearly 57, my much more varied training is enjoyable (and therefore sustainable) and I honestly don’t care what anyone thinks about my arms ( which are, happily , much better than they were 40 years ago 😊)

Perhaps training to impress others is just a lesson/phase for people to learn from and go through. Of course, not everyone will learn the lesson but I’d say eventually at least some will. And hopefully they’ve developed a healthy habit and have learned to enjoy it as well. Doing things for the “wrong” reasons could still be beneficial especially if the reasons transitions to a “good” reason.

I started to workday at age 17, 2007, and I got into training, like a typical teen, to improve my looks. I'll be, however, doing just mainly pushups, setups ( didn't know better and training info was usually limited to magazines). Nonetheless, while I fell In love with working out, and later incorporated weights, I years down the line trained like an animal but I never got the ripped look, or the visible abs I desperately wanted.
Eventually I developed an eating disorde that lasted for years. Now, I'm five foot 8, and I've never weighted more than 180 pounds, but I never got visible abs, even while counting macros. I even worked with personal trainers at a Gold's Gym,and while them I was forcing on size, I never got abs.
Over the years I stopped training over lack of interest, got into other hobbies. In 2019 I began with calisthenics, but mainly to learn the exercises ( they seemed fun), and for health.
I didn't get major results for when it comes to aesthetics, for I was inconsistent.
But in 2020, the lockdown happened, and I picked up trrail running, every evening, in order to deal with my then stress and anxiety. And I saw ab definition for the first time. I even lost size, for I neglected strength training. But I wasn't totally focused on aesthetics..
I was running cause I enjoyed it. Now I workout with high volume calisthenics, cause I like the energy exertion, hard work. And I'm seeing results at age 33.

I measure my body not by how it looks, but what I can do. As a martial artist, I want to be able to perform more moves, and win some amateur fights. As a future father, I want to be able to protect my kids and maybe carry them around for as long as I possibly can. As a human being, I just want to be as healthy as I can for as long as possible.
I think that's why I like philosophies like transhumanism, where the ultimate purpose is to attain the greatest abilities we possibly can, to achieve ever more.

validation from the opposite sex feels good and that's ok. if you're working out to make yourself attractive to the opposite sex, THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT! women have always found men with tall, lean, muscular physiques attractive AND THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT! men have always respected other men with tall, lean muscular physiques and once again, THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT! what is the point of any of this self improvement struggle we all go through, if the ultimate result isnt that it makes you a person with an abundant social life with people that like and respect you? all the self imrpovement ive done has been for the soul purpose of improving my social outcomes. it has improved my dating prospects, my career opportunities... life is about people and there's nothing wrong with doing things for the sake of other people. self improvement is the besting you can do, primarily for OTHER PEOPLE. it is the consideration of OTHER PEOPLE that you makes you do all the things that you do to not assault the 5 senses of the people you interact with. i LOVE the fact that men respecting me when they talk to me (i'm also 6ft9 so that helps too lol). i LOVE the fact that when i work out at home in my backyard lifting weights and doing weighted calisthenics, women walk by and stare at me through my yard fence often smiling or smirking, keeping eye contact or that they always tell me i look and smell good. as i guy who has lost almost 100 lbs and had FAAR from the best hygiene a good few years ago, that makes me feel good and i dont care what you say, you're never gonna convince me that's a bad thing.

Used to be a numbers guy. Led to a lot of tightness and pain, but I was buffed out. Now I'm a cardio and flexibility guy, skinnier than my previous build but much more shredded and very high stamina stats. This shit is like a video game to me now. I'm so much more in tune with my natural biomechanics. Currently doing a lot of ATG routines and some Weck Method stuff. It's also fun to pick a random skill like jump roping, handstands, even playing piano, and creating a gym routine you think trains you for that skill. It's so fun because for instance I work on a lot of hand/grip strength and flexibility exercises to get better at piano. It's led me to learn things like the Chopin Method of BioMechanics for playing piano. This style of training has become more of a lifestyle because it leads you down rabbitholes of knowledge. So much fun.

My reason for training is apparently quite strange to a lot of people or deemed "unhealthy" by some. I always say it's because I want to be perfect and people tend to find that to be an unreasonable goal. But the thing is, I like that. I like having a goal I'll never reach because it means I can always be trying to reach it. I know I'll never achieve perfection but the best chance I have of trying to be the perfect version of myself is to be going after it. I want to be faster, I want to be stronger, I want to be smarter, I want to be better. It's what attracted me to your videos so much (and why I bought superfunctional training 2.0)

Love hearing your opinion on this
I'll admit that while my main goal has always been better health and aesthetics are just nice to have
It did kinda disappoint me a little bit when I first got my physique how I wanted it
how few people actually care about your physique...at least enough for it to make a difference in interactions...
Ultimately though I believe that most people who manage to stay consistent with taking care of their health learn that extrinsic motivations are fleeting
But in a way, it's nice to know that being popular or desirable isn't based on such an easily attainable and fickle thing
I imagine if it were really so simple as building your mirror muscles to make everyone love you the world would eventually just become a bodybuilding contest where every "Alpha" lives in fear of losing his relationships to someone subjectively better looking than himself
