I have waited 22 months to post this- I had the honour of playing this piece with my orchestra when I was younger- the organ shook the stage when it came on at the end.
And this past Saturday I had the honour of walking out of my wedding as a newly wed with this piece triumphantly playing. Organ still shaking me to the core!

We did the same - 40 years ago. Our church organist said "What?" He was unfamiliar with it. I brought him the sheet music, and he did an awesome job. 40 years later a friend will still comment on "that awesome recessional"!

My experience is not quite as great, but still...
In junior high school I was 2nd clarinet, and we played this piece. I'll be 65 this year and I still get chills. The band director had been out sick for an extended period. Upon his return we spontaneously broke out into Great Gates of Kiev.
In high school I listened to Emerson Lake and Palmer's Pictures at an Exhibition, a lot. The church organ had been replaced by a Moog synthesizer.

The 109th, 114th, 115th, 116th, 117th, 118th, 201st Ukrainian Schutzmannschaft-battalions participated in anti-partisan operations in Ukraine and Belarus. In February and March 1943, the 50th Ukrainian Schutzmannschaft Battalion participated in the large anti-guerrilla action «Operation Winterzauber» (Winter magic) in Belarus, cooperating with several Latvian and the 2nd Lithuanian battalion. Schuma-battalions burned down villages suspected of supporting Soviet partisans.[30] On March 22, 1943, all inhabitants of the village of Khatyn in Belarus were burnt alive by the Nazis in what became known as the Khatyn massacre, with participation of the 118th Schutzmannschaft battalion.]

In celebration of the bravery by the Ukrainian people, please listen and Share this marvelous rendition of the GATE OF KIEV by composer Modést Petrovich Mussorgsky (21 Mar 1839 - 28 Mar 1881) with chorus and drawing of the gate in the capitol of Ukraine. (Less than 7-minutes)
The Great Gate of Kiev was inspired by a sketch that Viktor Hartmann made of a huge, monumental gate that he designed to commemorate the fact that the Beloved Tzar liberator, Alexander II, who freed all the serfs, had survived an early attempted assassination.

  • @CrayCruz

The Great Gate of Kiev is a true masterpiece in scale and scope- trumpets blaring, I picture the arrival of a great warrior looking to gain entry past the Gate and battling mightily to vanquish the hordes of soldiers sent to defeat him, but alas, the Gate proves too much and he dies, sword in hand, clutching at the Great Gate of Kiev, blood oozing from a thousand wounds, he breathes his last.

+Nick Wyatt it could be seen that way too. Ultimately, it is about triumph, whether it be man or nature. What I pictured was of man fighting the odds, and, at the moment of truth one prevails. It could easily go the other way. The warrior, or man triumphant. Even in defeat, man wins because despite overwhelming odds he reaches the gates, only to succumb to its greatness. It is an operatic ending of epic proportions, that denotes the grandeur of this masterpiece. It never fails to move me in ways that words cannot express fully. It is a testament to the majesty of this piece that moves so many in so many different ways. As it should be.

@Theodore Kaczynski Dude, literally ALL countries were made by elites. The founding fathers? They were some of the richest and most influential men in American society. They WERE the intellectuals and they WERE the elites. The people just went along with their plan. A country "being made by elites" doesnt automatically make it invalid. What IS invalid is violating international sovereignty.
