I always thought Megatron from Animated was just perfect. Like G1, it was a very kid-oriented show, so it could only be so dark and violent. But it accomplished making Megatron a threat by sidelining him, mostly, and had him scheming. The few times he entered the fight personally, he was a real threat and practically unstoppable. Still a cartoon villain in something very kid-friendly, but he never seemed pathetic or stupid.

I loved Ratchet in Prime too, though I feel like they sort of combined him with Kup a little bit giving him that grizzled war veteran thing (though Animated Ratchet had the same energy.) But he still had some really good moments, like fighting alongside Optimus against a battalion of zombified Terrorcons, or when the synthetic energon made him aggressive and he punched Megatron right in the face.

I will say in recent years I haven't been a fan of writers over exaggerating Starscream's cowardace. Yes, in G1 he can be cowardly, but that's mostly in the face of Megatron, against pretty much everyone else his bravery or lack there of is hardly an issue. Heck the fact that Starscream still manages to persist on trying to go against Megatron despite the numerous beatings he has received I would argue is somewhat a sign of bravery.
So, I'm really glad you chose Cybertron Starscream as a version of the character that's still a conniving snake, while being able to be competent in doing so.

Heck, G1 starscream is usually the one who’s always complaining when Megatron calls for a retreat as well, which maybe that’s either bravery or stupidity, but you at will least know Starscream wants to keep fighting.

I also really like Animated Shockwave. They kept Shockwave's original voice actor, and have him act as Megatron's agent on Cybertron with the space bridge, though with a different context. Big difference is Animated Shockwave was very good at being Megatron's informant by also being a spy. The guy was also way more competent than he was in the g1 cartoon bringing down Blurr & Ultra Magnus.

@@EternityKingdomsHeadHoncho Don't exaggerate. She didn't spend EVERY scene angsting about her dead partners. She has the right to grieve the loss of the people she cared about. Would you prefer she didn't react to their deaths at all?
She also was never hypocritical. Do you even know what that means? That's like telling someone else not to do something while you're doing that exact thing yourself. There might have been a time in the series where she tells someone not to do something she tried to do IN THE PAST but that's called character growth not being a hypocrite. There's a difference. Mainly that hypocrites don't acknowledge their own faults, they won't recognize the contradiction in what they're saying, but Arcee learned from her faults and that's why she's passing on that experience.
She isn't one note, she's a really complex character that is more than just her trauma. She also develops over the series through her connection with Jack.

I think Prime Megatron is a much better evolution of G1 Megatron while keeping the basic elements of G1 Megatron. For starters, even by the man's own admission, MUCH better Frank Welker voice. Better than the Bayverse growling and certainly the G1 screechiness.
Unlike Animated Megatron, he doesn't have as much in the long term scheming, but he's a regular presence yet still maintains being a frightening figure. THIS is a Megatron to be afraid of.
And he does have plans that only get screwed over due to factors he cannot control, but otherwise has plans that remain successful. Also, his personality. He's got a faux sense of being calm and refined, but it's very obvious it's a veneer for the raging brutal warlord he is. The smoothness of Frank's voice here helps convey that.
He actually has charisma that inspires his troops but also controls them through fear.
He's Animated Megatron filtered through G1 Megatron, creating a better version of the familiar Decepticon Leader we all know and love.

I feel like atFP got a lot of characters just right but that's personal bias because that's what I grew up with. I think Optimus was a perfect mix of G1 and Bayverse, I think Bumblebee was a larger factor than in G1, and had more personality being the human connection, Arcee, as statedRatchet, as stated. I agree with Cybertron Starscream as a choice but if we go to the likes of Soundwave, I think Prime absolutely nailed it. Soundwave is cold and calculated, moreso than Megatron, and unwaveringly loyal to the point he crashed his own systems so he couldn't be interrogated.

  • @BainesMkII
    @BainesMkII 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think the movie helped G1 Megatron and Starscream, as it finally allowed them to achieve consequential results before their inevitable failure.
Instead of his TV series failures, Megatron led a mostly successful attack that killed multiple Autobots, and he straight out executed Ironhide. You saw his deadliness, his treachery, his self-assurance (such as rejecting Unicron) and how it can crumble in the service of self-preservation (surrendering to Unicron). And while his victory over Optimus was tainted by Hot Rod's assistance, that was somewhat countered by Hot Rod also being the one that (by sheer chance) spoiled the initial ambush in the hijacked shuttle and thus potentially made it harder for the Decepticons to win before Optimus arrived. Galvatron killing Starscream also tends to bleed into a Megatron moment, occurring before Galvatron starts to differentiate himself from Megatron.
Starscream's opportunistic elimination of Megatron carried a harsher and darker tone than any of his TV takeover attempts. While it was off-camera, he also somehow beat and/or otherwise convinced the other Decepticons (who were already fighting each other for the right to rule) to make him the new leader.

People ragging on G1 is getting very stale too though, I understand some fans could be a bit dogmatic about it but I think the majority of G1 fans understand its limitations but enjoy that it was in good fun, something I find lacking in some modern shows/comics that come off like a bad soap opera, which isn't exactly why I got into a series about gun toting robots who turn into trucks, jets, dinosaurs etc as a kid. IMO nothing has stricken the balance between a bit more serious drama/writing and old school fun the right way since Beast Wars, and I like some other shows a lot too like Animated, but that was the way to do it.

Personally, I prefer G1 Arcee over Prime characterisation. While they're basically the exact same characterisation, but G1 Arcee can both be the motherly figure and a kick tailpipe fighter without having a backstory that feels like it was made while listening to Linkin Park for far too long. Which is how I veiw Prime Arcee.
As for Elita-One, I actually prefer the WFC Trilogy version. As despite that shows flaws it kept Elita-One feeling like Elita-One and not her skin acting like another one of the female Autobots. As Personally I think Elita-One in EarthSpark acts more like the hot head Five/NovaStar than Elita-One herself.
Finally Trypticon, I vastly prefer the WFC game depiction of him. As he's intelligent and he loves spreading chaos and destruction. To the point of laughing evilly at the thought of blowing up a bunch of Autobots. A one note characterisation? Yes, but I vastly prefer my Decepticons to actually be evil to the core and this works vastly better than his G1 counterpart.

I'd say Animated but she didn't do much there, either, while none of the Bay Arcees matter and Energon Arcee is also practically a different character.
The same with Beast Wars Megatron. I'd go with Prime Megatron because it's the only time I believed his redemption arc, or at least his decision to end the war. Beast Wars alone gave us Silverbolt, Megatron, Scorponok, Inferno, Rampage, and Ravage who are all much better characters than their G1 name sakes. Granted most of them have nothing to do with their G1 counterparts other than name.
Beast Machines gave us my personal favorite depiction of Trust. Again really has nothing to do with his G1 name sake but when I hear the name Thrust and immediately think of a cool Motorcycle Vehicon general before I think of a cone headed seeker that really tells you how little character G1 Thrust actually has.
RID2001 gave us Ultra Magnus, X-Brawn, and Scourge. I swear I'll get to someone who isn't just a name slap eventually.
Armada gave us Blurr, Red Alert, and Scavenger. And I don't even like Armada so that's saying a lot when I have to admit there are better depictions of G1 characters in this series.
Energon gave us a really interesting modern take on Rodimus.
Cybertron gave us what I will agree is the most successful Starscream in the cartoons. I think there is a comic Starscream who is actually better but limiting it to cartoons Cybertron is the best. We also got my personal favorite Soundwave out of this series, I love his ability to mimic the voices of other characters and I wish future incarnations kept that because he used it really effectively in that show. I also like the alt mode and I'm glad Earth Spark brought that back.
Animated gave us Prowl, Ratchet, Elita-One/Blackarachnia (I might be cheating with that one but I'm counting it), Omega Supreme, Wreck-Gar, Megatron, Blitzwing, Mixmaster, and Shockwave/Longarm Prime.
I'm listing Ratchet here not the Prime version because I kind of feel like Prime is just repeating what Animated did with some elements of movie Ratchet in mixed in... well really the only character trait movie Ratchet ever had across 4 movies, feeling guilty about not being able to fix Bumblebee's voice box. Prime Ratchet isn't a better depiction of G1, he's a better depiction of Bayverse Ratchet because he's using Animated personality traits to flesh out the character more. Animated is really the more interesting one to me.
I threw Elita-One in here, technically kind of a name dump but the design does kind of look like a recolored Ariel so she's referencing both the original design of the G1 character as well as her name after being rebuilt. She does also still have that connection to Optimus Prime so even though she spends most of the series as Blackarachnia I really feel like she has more in common with her G1 counterpart than her BW counterpart.
Omega Supreme, this is the first time the Autobot's ship has actually transformed into a giant robot which just made me instantly love this character.
Wreck-Gar... it's Weird Al voicing him and he went from a Junkion to a garbage truck which is just a really interesting way to update the character. I love this take. Unlike others I've mentioned I don't see this as a better take than the original just a character I really enjoy.
Megatron, I know I already mentioned Beast Megs, so did you, but I had to also mention this Megatron because I love how he's depicted in this series and he's probably the first really good Megatron who's a homage to the original and not just a name slap on a completely different character.
Blitzwing, I love his face swapping gimmick. It's slightly problematic because he's a villain and that's MOST characters with DID but I still find him entertaining so I'll give him a pass.
Mixmaster I had to mention here because his G1 toy bio does mention him being a chemist but the cartoon doesn't really show that too often, Animated really played into that aspect of the character.
Swindle is still my favorite depiction of that character. Earthspark isn't bad but I think the voice casting here is just perfect for that type of character.
Shockwave took the being left on Cybertron thing from the original cartoon and actually gave him something to do. G1 Shockwave really just stood around for 6 billion years waiting by the phone for Megatron to call but Animated is a spy. I love the character so much I made my own Shockwave/Longarm custom out of the Siege Shockwave repainting the armor pieces he comes with in Longarm colors.
Prime gave us Arcee, Wheeljack, Breakdown, Predaking, and Skylynx. OK Skylynx is really only here because I like the design better than G1 and no other reason. But I am glad Earth Spark is taking what Prime did with Breakdown and expanding on it more, I really think he was kind of wasted potential by killing him off without having him switch sides to join the Autobots.
RID2015 has a really interesting new take on Cyclonus which is saying a lot for a character who was in all of 2 episodes.
Cyberverse has what is now my favorite Grimlock ever. I didn't really like him at first because I thought his personality/voice would have been more fitting for a modern take on Tracks rather than Grimlock but in beast mode you get a much more classic sounding Grimlock and he's another character with DID who also happens to be the most accurate portrayal of DID in Transformers. Earth Spark is also doing the Grimlock DID thing but is actually a worse depiction than Cyberverse did so I hate the Earth Spark version. His episode which is also where Jawbreaker gets his beast mode is my most hated episode of Earth Spark right now.
I thought I'd also include the Prime Wars Trilogy and War for Cybertron Trilogy cartoons. There aren't a lot of good things about either of these cartoons but I will say Elita-One was depicted really well. Yeah she's like of an Autobot leader character still but she's also more her own character and not just a female Optimus Prime. Earth Spark does have both Elita-One and Arcee in the series at the same time and they're both kind of generic tough female characters. Arcee does feel a bit younger and more up beat than Elita-One who might be older and more experienced but I don't feel like I really know either of them well enough yet.
Megatron/Galvatron is also honestly the best part of either series. They're both voiced by the same guy, Jason Marnocha. I say both because I'm not sure if the two Megatrons from both trilogies are suppose to be the same Megatron or not. I can see how they could be I just don't know. Also because he does also voice Galvatron. If we treat them as one continuity then the War for Cybertron trilogy actually take place BEFORE the Prime Wars Trilogy even though they were made in the opposite order.
As the younger Megatron I love that he isn't portrayed as the generic villain that other Megatron's tend to be. He does some really bad things but we do also get to see him struggling to make decisions that he sees as necessary to win the war but would also require sacrificing his own troops. Most Megatrons wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice soldiers like pawns in a game of chess but this is a Megatron who actually views his soldiers as lives who matter and that's why he struggles so much. There's an entire episode where Shockwave tells him that an Energon mine is producing so little product that they'd be better off killing the miners and using their Energon than trying to keep the mine open. Megatron goes to the mine himself to investigate what's going wrong there and tells Shockwave not to do anything until he gives the order. And Jason plays it so sad and devastated when Megatron realizes that Shockwave was right. You can tell in the voice acting that he doesn't want to give the order but at the same time feels he has to.
As the older Megatron, taking place after the war has ended, he's playing a good guy Megatron who's remorseful of his past actions. Jason plays both the evil and the good remarkably well. Again his acting is the best part of these trilogies. I can believe him both as a villain and as a hero. With most other portrayals of Megatron it's hard to imagine him ever being a good guy. Even when he's suppose to be good it still feels like he's obviously the villain. And with Earth Spark Megatron specifically, he has the opposite problem when I'm really finding it hard to picture him ever being a villain. I don't hate Rory McCann by any means, it's just hard to picture his Megatron ever being the bad guy. With Jason though he works as both. If you're going to have a redeemed Megatron who is this redeemable/redeemed heroic/tragic villain character Jason really is the best voice actor for the role.
And Galvatron just has the added bonus of being a time traveler future version of Megatron who was upgraded by Unicron and gave his past self the golden disk from Beast Wars as a warning to help change his future so he'd never become Galvatron. They did a similar story line with that PS2 game that also involved time travel to get Megatron and Galvatron in the same place despite being the same person but that game had really terrible voice acting. I mean this series also has some terrible voice acting... ironic how BW Megatron has the worst voice and is a total betrayal of the character in the same series where G1 Megatron has the best voice actor.
I put a lot of Megatrons in here for different reasons... and no Optimus Primes because I don't feel like there has been a better Optimus Prime than the original. They all kind of just copy the original and the ones that actually try to do something different with him aren't really better.

@@8ball180 He's much more intelligent, able to speak in robot mode. In beast mode he's mute and he literally doesn't have control of his beast mode. Grimlock is also shown with his optics changing color based on which personality is fronting.
The reason Earth Spark is a problem where Cyberverse isn't is because Earth Spark Grimlock is also far more violent in beast mode and the robot mode personality is portrayed being afraid of his own beast mode. He gets triggered by Jawbreaker and warns him to stop multiple times before transforming and rampaging around Witwicky. This is a trope in fiction that tends to make people in real life fear anyone who actually has DID and makes it hard for anyone with DID to get help. Cyberverse Grimlock doesn't really have this problem as he isn't portrayed with that same sense of fear, he just kind of exists with 2 personalities.

@@RialVestro I get what you are saying but I think less like DiD and more connected to his Emotional state as he didn't really seem to fear his form just that he was getting bad memories of his experience with Mandroid. • @RialVestro
      @RialVestro 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@8ball180 What do you mean he didn't seem to fear his form? He literally spends the majority of the episode in robot mode and after Jawbreaker scans his beast mode he keeps pressuring Grimlock to transform and train with him but Grimlock keeps turning him down and trying to train him while remaining in robot mode instead. Literally ever time his beast form is brought up Grimlock has a tone of fear in his voice as he tries to come up with an excuse to stay in robot mode. Jawbreaker starts pushing Grimlock more and more after Grimlock has already said no multiple times and then Grimlock literally says "whenever I'm in beast mode I tend to lose control and my friends get hurt." that is a literally confession that he's afraid to transform. And also literally as soon as he does transform to beast mode he goes on a rampage in Witwicky and Jawbreaker has to apologize to him and calm him down.
That episode also make me hate Jawbreaker by the way because of the fact that Grimlock told him NO multiple times and he kept pushing have no respect for personal boundaries. Even if Grimlock wasn't afraid to transform Jawbreaker still should not have pushed him to transform when he didn't want to. It also seems to contradict an earlier episode where Hashtag did exactly the same thing to him trying to push him to scan an alt mode before he was ready so to have him turn around and treat Grimlock the same way. I just really hated that episode.

@@RialVestro Again he never seems to fear the beast mode just the memories of his torture. Plus Jawbreaker only asks him once to transform and in the same scene Grimlock just tells to leave him alone due to experiencing the memories and fears hurting people out of anger not the alt mode.

I will argue your choice for Megatron, while I agree that BW Megatron is a better character, I disagree with him being considered the same character, and not just because he's G1 Megatron's descendant but because I think he feels like a different character all together.
I think prime would have been the best choice there because he's very similar to the G1 megs, and because he technically won, albeit temporarily.

I’ve always found the idea of later iterations of characters being better to be somewhat flawed. Yes, Armada Starscream and IDW Megatron are improvements upon their Sunbow iterations, but they shouldn’t become the default version of the character. Cyberverse Starscream doesn’t work for me because the writers wanted to have their “Starscream is sad and abused; feel bad for him” cake and eat “Starscream is a power-hungry schemer with no redeeming qualities” too. (EarthSpark admittedly does this better)
I’m sick of the “sympathetic miner Megatron gone bad” origin being repeated for the last 16 years across IDW1, Prime, Cyberverse, and EarthSpark. If it happens again in TF One, I’m going to scream. There’s nothing wrong with him being just a bad guy instead of a fallen hero. All he needs is the right writing to make him entertaining (see Animated Megs).

Yeah, the character is awesome, but in neither personality or appearance she doesn't really resemble Arcee all too much. Even TJ kind hinted here Prime Arcee was a more of a big sister archetype opposed to the more motherly nature G1 had.
I feel like Animated was pretty good reinvention of the original concept of Arcee, though it's unfortunate her screen time and development was limited. I would have really liked to see her relationship with Sari since Animated Arcee's job was to teach new cybertronians.
