    • @alfatejpblind6498
      @alfatejpblind6498 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TheNumberOne Page A case is necessary for the raspberry pi, because if you dont have it and accidentally place it on a conductable surface, it wont work and might even be destroyed.

    I'd like to provide a different source of power to the pi. I wanted to tap into one of my HVAC 24VAC lines. Where would I find a tranformer that takes 24VAC and outputs 5VDC with enough amperage?

    You can use GUI programs over ssh, if you have a reasonable fast wifi. If you are on windows, then you need a software like Xming and Putty to show the programs, on linux it works (most of the time, if you have X installed) out of the box.
    GPIO: General-purpose input/output
    3.3V is a standard voltage for logic boards. If you search arround, there are lots of equipment that works on 3.3-5V

      The f.. what do you mean? You want to make a retro game? That could mean several different things, by itself, so please explain in more detail.
      The Raspberry Pi is just a very small and cheap personal computer. You could use it to play retro games on it.

      there are ways to erase the memory on a NES/SNES cartridge (well, probably any cartridge game), get/create a modified ROM of some game, and have it compiled and written to the cartridge's memory. HOWEVER, you'll need additional, pretty-penny hardware to do so.

    I have an Arduino. Should I get a Raspberry Pi, as well? He made it sound like the Arduino has more capabilities.
    The thing is, I've used it at school (only once) with MATLAB. When I'm done with my course, I'd like to continue tinkering around with it. I just don't know, what kind of stuff can I do? Are these things circuit boards and really small, programmable computers?
    Don't worry everyone, now I have one of each!

    • @TDGalea
      @TDGalea 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is basically a full computer but with an ARM processor, so in terms of software it CAN be kind of limited.

    • @JamesBruceUK
      @JamesBruceUK 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In short: The Arduino lets you do more with standard electronics. The Pi lets you do more with software.
      With the Arduino, you're basically limited to programming in C - unless you interface with a PC and use standard firmata. With the Pi, you can program in anything you want - Perl, Java, Javascript, whatever.

    Hi James, i bought some instructions material on the arduino and Rasp-pi on humble bundle, and i am waiting for my hardware to arrive next week. What is your background? It seems to me that everyone i hear of who makes something cool happen with the rasp-pi has a background in engineering or data.

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Madsovic999 I've been programming from a young age, but never professionally. Looks like an interesting bundle, but I still havent touched the last lot of Make books I got from Humble! I would advise not to try combining Arduino and Pi until you're completely comfortable with one or the other. Start with Arduino if the electronics side of things is more interesting; basic electronics isn't hard. If programming is more your interest, start with learning Python on Pi.

    • @Madsovic999
      @Madsovic999 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MakeUseOf That's good to hear, i love tinkering, but i don't know if going professional (i.e. getting a degree in engineering) is a possibility for me.
      Thanks for the advice, i guess i will look around for an Arduino then. Cheers!

    I'd quite like to get one of these for my nephew, but I'm concerned that, knowing nothing about the innards of computers, I'd be unable to do anything with it. How easy is it to set up and use and is it something a 10 year old pick up and use?

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MrNobody808 Depends what you want to do with it. You don't need to know anything about hardware, but you will need to learn some basic electronics if you want to interface your projects with sensors or motors. Mostly, it's a case of putting in an SD card, and plugging in a mouse and keyboard. For somethign specifically kid-friendly though, I'd recommend the Kano kit: www.kano.me/products/kano-kit (our review is here:th-cam.com/video/jwXfz0Bcx90/w-d-xo.html ) , which includes a guidebook and some coding tutorials, as well as educational software. Should make for a great Xmas present! You will need a monitor to plug it into though (or TV)

    It doesn't matter if the GPIO output is only 3.3 volts. The TTL specs specifiy that a voltage above 2 volt is a logic 1 and a voltage below 0.8 volt is a logic 0. Therefore no transistors or fet's are needed to connect to other logic IC's.

      PeterK6502 Logic ICs, sure. 5v sensors, and output devices, no.

      We tend to avoid the copycats, even if they are more powerful, purely because they lack any kind of community support. If you have one specific use case in mind, it might be fine, but I wouldn't expect to follow other tutorials with it.

      +bigyote Pi 2 is the newest, yes. Best option for beginner, since you'll get more performance when running the Raspbian interface. Nearly everything written for previous Pi models is compatible with 2.

    I have waited sometime to see if this small all-in-one pc are any good for my future project. As of today I use a desktop computer as a broadband firewall, but it´s big, noisy and draw lots of power.
    If I could use a board like this with a linux firewall it would be great. But it has to have two network ports. As of today I can´t find any boards that have two network cable ports. Any suggestions?

    can you make video about how set up miner? is still working and how many coins you are making now?

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, mining died on these things years ago. If you have a decent graphics card, you can try NiceHash, which automatically mines the most profitable alt-coin, then trades it for bitcoin. You can't mine bitcoin directly, but you can make about a $1-$2/day mining altcoins and taking the profits in bitcoin.

    Well just so everyone knows. The pi type computers were designed to spark the interest in younger people to want to become programmers or developers by a Professor at Cambridge University. The intent was to give young people exposure to a computer they could or would have to learn about not just load programs to someone's OS. So the short answer is the Raspberry Pi is capable of doing anything that you can make it do. If your not willing to learn how to do it yourself then go spend that 1000 dollars for the latest greatest PC.

    • @anthrax3404
      @anthrax3404 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Abhi Yadav There are many Linux flavors created for the Raspberry Pi. The one with the largest support base and with the most support is Raspbian, which I would reccomend for beginners. However, I dual boot my pi 2 from a 128gb MicroSD, with Arch Linux and Kali Linux. Make sure when downloading the .img file that it is made for the Raspberry Pi or for ARM processors.
