- A warm car is a comfortable way to start any winter day. No need to scrape ice and snow, and the engine does not need to perform a cold start. In this video I install a Defa Termini II 1700W cabin heater into my 2009 Saab 9-5 2.3t Biopower Griffin. This car has the 600W engine block heater from factory which means there is a 230V electric outlet in the passenger footwell.
I connect the car to the timered electric outlet in the parking lot, and two hours before I leave, power is turned on and the car heats up.

I think "install" is exaggerated... title should be "Defa Cabin Heater plug in".
Disagree. I had to do lots of trial and error to find the correct way for installation.
I think what Lars is trying to say is that you didn't actually show any installation of the cables, branching or anything. You just talked about it and showed the most basic of cable plug in for 10 minutes...
Another talking head.
Here in Canada, we use Remote car starters...you should try them.
You mentioned that the heater has temperature control and won't reach 1700W unless it's colder than -25°C. Does this mean that if it's set to 1700W and the weather is, say, -15°C, it would still use more than 830W (Mode I)? Considering the engine block heater (300W), as long as the cabin heater draws no more than 1000W, it should be fine for the 6A limit. Please correct me if I misunderstood! :)
I agree that Saab is a great car in the winter. For the passed 28 years of driving them, they have proved themselves. It would be great to hear your thoughts as well on the subject. Here in Canada, I have seen at times as low as -28C. and I would say and average of -8C at times.
Thanks, I'll wait for some snow which will be the perfect backdrop :)
Have you tried to do this install?
Thanks for the DIY video! Need to do this to our new 2008 9-5 2.3t Biopower which was just imported from Sweden!
Nice to hear! I assume it has the wiring installed?
It has the engineblock heater (like all biopower models i assume) and that works awesome, but it doesnt have the wiring to inside the cabin yet, so it needs to be installed! If i remember right, you talked about installing td04 turbo to your new car, phoenix, im really waiting that for that video because im surely going to do same! Many Saabs get imported from Sweden to here, Finland, because you guys have so much better equipmented cars and lower kms. With like 7000 euros you get here almost 200k driven usually not well equipmented 9-5, when in Sweden you get so much nicer and lower km´s 9-5 with same price!
I can't confirm the TD04 rumors just yet ;) Stay tuned for that. Interesting that there is such a difference to Finland. Here in Sweden the 9-5:s are very cheap to buy these days.
They truly are cheap and best purchase in that price range, no other car can deliver same style, ride comfort, new modelyears and power in that price range! That price difference is mostly caused by our high tax program which makes even used cars pretty pricey! But im still really enjoying this new 2008 9-5 add to our Saab fleet!
Hi, Is it possible to somehow connect heater to car's battery? My car is plug in hybrid and so it has high capacity battery. Apart from that I do not have 230 v plug near my car!
Han lär ge dig den snart! Kallt ute ju! :P
Good stuff bud. It's not even winter and I miss seat heaters never mind a cabin or block heater. One day!
Heated seats is a must in winter conditions, couldn't live without it here. :) Thanks for your comment.
Aye, I recovered a heating element out my '02 2.0t and kept the switches too so I can check wiring and stuff. My '05 2.3t was specced with sports suspension and no seat heaters and I'm not so keen on it.
Can get pretty chilly here in Scotland too :-)
Strange. I have a 2008 2.3 biopower and I only had the blockheater and not the power outlet in the cabin. Had to buy the defa Y connection to connect to the block heater harness and then install the 220 power outlet in the cabin myself.
It seems like the engine heater is standard and not the outlet
Hi Jonathan! Another very useful video - thank-you. I see Meko**men have this heater on sale for 699:- at the moment. Other points regarding winter operations are to keep a spray bottle of windscreen deicer in the car 'just in case' the electrical connection fails. Scraping the glass must be a final resort, and even then, using a plastic scraper. There's a special place in hell for those who use a metal blade to scrape windows ;) . Here in the countryside south of Stenungsund on the west coast we've had four mornings of air frost in a row ( minus 4C ), and don't forget there's a big difference between air frost, that causes the windows to ice up) and ground frost (calling for greater caution and winter wheels as you mentioned). The boards will as usual soon be full of experts offering their wisdom on this subject. // Paul
Exactly, Mekonomen finally had it on sale (I was sure they were going to sell it cheaper so I waited until now). I am sure the Raven never has to see the ice scraper, but honestly I don't have the time. Our cars are scraped (plastic scraper) and brushed in the heavy winter days. There's just no getting around that and I'll have to polish the car in the spring instead...
I did install exactly one of these Defa heaters in my Saab 9-5 as well about a month ago, in the same place that you installed it in Anna's car. And yes, the panel is now about to fall down :( So I'll have to re-do the install according to your instructions now :p
Hahaha, I guess I wasn't the only one who put it there. Not long after: "honey, the heater is all crooked. You must fix it!"
This is perfect for Canadian winters.
Our climates are similar :)
Looked into installing this but it is too bad North American Saabs have a different block heater and cable that doesn't allow a power cable extension kit to be installed.
Looking at installing a Defa heating system for our new car - mainly for the internal heater to de-ice the car but given that the wiring needs to be put into place under the bonnet anyway I may as well fit the block heater ( DV5R engine). Much cheaper and more flexible than the Webasto system.
i only see saabs on the side of the highway nowadays
Why you said your parking lot socket gives 6A of current, if it's stated in the fuse that it gives 25A?
Does it also best the vehicle's engine or only the inside of it?
I sometimes forget to unplug the Saab, so it's warming it for like 12 hours, and well... It gets quite hot in there :D
That's not good for the engine heater element... It will cause premature failure of the heater in the long run.
I know, it's not something that happens every day.
Wow, 12 hours! Hot hot hot. ;)
Hur högt ställt har du sätet?
Will this kill my battery?
No since you connect it to an outlet
You said you use it for 2 hours prio driving? My Defa Engine Heater takes about 2 hours to heat up the car, so i think that i could plug them in at about the same time right?
Yep, that's correct
Didn't know 9-5 in sweden had a 230v plug under the glovebox !
It's included in the Biopower models. But the 230v needs to be connected to an external outlet, it can't be used while driving.
Tek55AE86
Not included in mine 9-5 biopower 2.0t 2007.

Is your 9-5 sold in Sweden? From what I've heard, all the Swedish biopower 9-5:s have it.
Trionic Seven
Ja min är svensksåld 2006:a automat
Hej! En off topic fråga!
Okej tackar !
Hi John! How was this functionning over the year? I would enjoy a video about 9-5s makes great winter cars! :) Sounds fascinating!
It's been very very good. Love a warm car on a cold morning
I'm in the US. Where can I purchase one of these? 2006 95 SportCombi 2002 93SE
Good question! Defa doesn't seem to be sold in the US, but I guess there are other brands over there.
Does yours have an outlet in the passenger footwell?
I dont agree to Sweden is very cold in winter. It's very seldom below 0 C in my part of Sweden.
It's a big country ;)
Lars Niklasson Hede So you live in Skåne or something ?
Yes In Skanör and I dont like that all foriners think it is very cold here.
Lars Niklasson Hede I can hear that you have not experienced snow in Sweden before :)
I have a Calix heater in my SAAB and it has worked excellent for years:
