I get frustrated with people who negatively comment on works like this. This sextet is deceptively difficult to sing and anyone who has the guts to sing it deserves all the praise they can get. I know. I sing with Seattle Opera, have done Lucia and watched the principles (and myself) sweat bullets doing it. So... unless you have actually sung the piece in front of 2500 paying customers perhaps it would be best to keep negative comments to yourselves. Otherwise, sing it and yourself!

A word about the fabulous Miss Peters; she was a very generous spirit!

  • @KSfan4ever

Anecdote about Miss Peters: I sang in a professional opera chorus in the 1970s when Miss Peters was hired to sing Violetta in La Traviata. She was brought in prior to our first rehearsal so that we could be introduced to her. She was a gorgeous, diminutive woman dressed head to toe in frothy pale lime green, from her dress to her stockings, kitten heels, short gloves and small hand purse. All in pale lime green. Even her tiny poodle who was carried in the arms of one of her entourage had a lime green collar. She haughtily looked us over, nodded once, turned and left with her entourage. Not a hello, nothing.
On the day of the dress rehearsal which was open to the press, she wore a - you guessed it - a pale lime green ball gown over an enormous hoop that extended at least three feet on either side of her. The hoop was so wide that it was larger than the opening to the wings and she was unable to exit off the stage. When faced with this dilemma, she didn't bat an eye and grabbed the bottom rim of the hoop, squished it and hoisted it above her head and all you could see below it were two slender little legs clad in lime green tights that scurried off into the wings. Quite the memory! Oh, and she sang brilliantly!

I love this recording because of the story I was told that goes with it involving my voice teacher in high school, Brian Schexnayder. Apparently Dano and Brian thought that Peters was a stuck up diva and they weren't going to let her steal the show, so they sang as loud as they could throughout the piece to mess with her. About 2/3 of the way you can see her trying really hard to compete, and not to be outdone she holds the C# at the end.... I love it.

Roberta Peters recorded Lucia di Lammermoor in 1957, conducted by Erich Leinsdorf and opposite Jan Peerce. This is over 25 years later and of course the voice has aged, but no doubt in her prime she did it, very well, and frequently!

When I saw the artists arrive onstage I couldn't help but think about a great "bon mot" I read about Rossini -- apparently composers and their associates referred to the obligatory end-of-the-act ensemble as the "row of artichokes." It's refreshing to realize they didn't take themselves too seriously.

What are talking about? Embarassing? Roberta ends here on the Db. Sutherland ends the sextet on the Db, and always has. Roberta only had notes up to the high D at this point in her career, which her accompanist noted when asked. Sutherland ended her Met Lucia's on the high Eb, and only transposed a portion of the first half of the mad scene. Maybe you should check you facts before posting. Btw, Roberta was a huge Sutherland fan and said "I admire her very much".

Do a google search for Mr. Schexnayder-- he has a music school down in Texas and makes appearances, also teaches University courses. He and the tenor were not very nice to Peters-- I can tell they tried to drown her out but she held her own. Bonynge took the sextet much too fast at the end--they were all gasping for air. Maybe Bonynge, husband of Sutherland, allowed her the extra note at the end. She is not the type to do that unless permitted to do so--the conductor or music director would have a "talk" with anyone who did it without permission. Well done, dear lady! I have done minor community theater and the extra beat is allowed only with permission or else.

What are you....tone deaf? Sutherland sang the sextet in this very same key...ending on the Db, right up into her last Lucia in 1988. She never, ever, ended the sextet on a high B natural. She sang the first half of the mad scene down a tone in 1982, the remainder she sang in the usual key...ending on Eb. You clearly have no business accusing others of having "no knowledge".

Just a comment on Roberta Peters' singing this sextet, I'm sure she was given this part in this Gala as a testament to her long career with the Met. She could never have handled this role even in her prime. She had a pretty voice, but not one that could have handled Lucia........imho of course.

I have an in-house from a night in -- I'm gonna guess 1967, in which she sang Lucia opposite Alfredo Kraus. The entire performance sparked, everything was ball to the wall, it's a great example of inherently lighter voices giving all they had and making it really work. Kraus was inspired, took the high D with her at the finale to this entire scene. The recording was from the side stage by the manager, the effect is as if you are on the stage in the middle of the singers. It's thrilling, and, indeed, Peters was more than up to singing it her way. She and Bing had a very special relationship, she needn't have sucked up to him. She was a very great singer, a perfect technician. A consummate professional.

Christ, at the height of her career Peters could hardly have sung this role. I read the review in German magazines of the era and they were astonished that she would be permitted onto stages as anything other than a comprimaria or soubrette with a short top. Maybe Zerlina. Yeah, she does manage to extrude one high D flat the same way I extrude a turd, but she should have left singing about 10 years earlier when there were a few roles in which she was not an embarrassment.

Robert Harvey. So you read a review by a German critic who didn't know what they were talking about it seems. Short top? Ms. Peters sang Zerbinetta, the Queen of the Night, and the concert aria Popoli de Tessaglia. Tebaldi had a short top with problematic high Cs and nothing beyond that. Ms. Peters sang very well for a very long time, giving recitals into her 70s. You must be good at extruding from your behind then because Ms. Peters hit that out of the park.
