    Nicolai Ghiaurov's vocal and dramatic chracterization of Gounod's Mephistopheles is legendary..

    Molto bello! Far registrare alla Ricciarelli un Faust negli anni buoni sarebbe stato un bel investimento!

    Could you elaborate on what you are talking about? It was my understanding that the only mikes used were to pick up the performance for the broadcast, not for amplification and that they were at the foot of the stage, so none of the singers would have had a personal mike. And why would Ghiaurov have needed a mike? He had a large voice!

    Actually, since he'd been singing for the Met since he was 21 (got his start in opera on their old TV performances), and since he'd sung 234 performances at the Met in his career, I think he was a big part of the Met family. It makes perfect sense that he was chosen for the gala.

      And caused the trip to be off balanced..Well it was a long time ago. I seem to recall...been a long time since I watched it live on TV in 1983..this was the final piece for the Gala. It was intended to be timed at the exact hour 100 years prior when the same trio was performed for the opening night of the Met. I may be incorrect..

    Superlative... et qui l'aurait cru au début des années 80 ? Une Elvira ou encore une Mireille qui n'étaient pas pour elle (vue à la scène Montpellier Avignon)... Puis arriva le miracle quelques années plusieurs tard. Fabuleuse ♥️

    Ricciarelli is in great shape here. The same for Ghiaurov whose bass is just ravishing. Also my deep respect for William Lewis who I happen to have on a OONY Masnadieri conducted by Eeve Queler and sang a wide repertoire from Verdi to Mozart. His Arrigo from Vespri must be cited.

    Made me cry. Ricciarelli and Ghiaurov are sensational. This brings back memories of hearing them in the theater. Alas I heard Lewis in the theater all too often. He was a 'minute man' - a guy who could go on in a minute to sub for the ailing star tenor. Rather like Frederick Jagel a generation earlier.
    My question is - who got sick? Kraus, Gedda? No body would cast William Lewis in a gala of stars.

  • @filledevoyage
    @filledevoyage 15 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    No. However, you can hear him better because he had a mic. William Lewis refused to have a mic for this performance, so the fact that you can still hear him is pretty amazing.

    Ricciarelli and Ghiaurov, superb! Mr. Lewis, respectfully, might as well had left after the first 30 secs.

    ME! Basses generally sing better than the higher voices anyway.. and I love Ghiaurov.

    @2loperadeparis It seems that many opera singers aren't concerned with diction.

  • @filledevoyage
    @filledevoyage 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    There wasn't a problem with the mic, it's just that Lewis refused to have a mic at all. He'd never needed a mic at the Met before, and he wasn't about to start then. =)

  • @Agorante
    @Agorante 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes that could be. I remember Benito di Bella saved a performance at SFO. He was engaged the next season in a major part for which he would never have otherwise been considered appropriate. Alas - the real world is not a fairy tale - he wasn't very good and never was asked back again.

    You cannot hear any of her low notes. Nor from about A4 down. No chest. his voice was always huge and dark. Lewis is in his nose. There is a great recording of this with Morris, Hadley and Vaness.

    @2loperadeparis Un peu sévère! Certes la diction n'est pas impeccable mais pour ma part je comprend quand même ce qu'ils chantent!
