Rescuing a cranky juvenile flying-fox in a hedge: this is Pelican

  • Pelican is a very small looking juvenile Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who ended up hanging low in a hedge in a small suburban front yard.
She looks like she's about 16 weeks old, but her forearm measures out at around 6 months old & her weight says she's about 100g underweight. She has a small cute face, a lot of battitude, and the language of a salty sailor with the self-confidence to back it up.
It was with some dismay that I noticed one thumb claw had either been burnt off or ripped out, and the other thumb was a little swollen. To me, these things usually indicate electrical burn damage, but as with most triaging and diagnosis it's a work in progress and changes as you notice more indications of one thing or another.
When I try to work out what happened to a bat, I take into account many things; some of them I don't even articulate or notice at a conscious level, but which contribute to my impressions and help form my diagnosis and treatment plan.
With Pelican, she was bright; she didn't have that glazed and really glassy eyed look of shock and there was no burnt smell or any ashy burns on the base of the thumb. Trying to formulate a scenario which would factor in all I could see and her location didn't really suggest electrocution to me though it was a possibility.
It was a fairly busy road so there was a chance of a motor vehicle featuring somewhere in her collision with fate.
When I looked at her other thumb claw I could see that it was quite blunted; this sort of blunting occurs when a bat is dragged on a rough surface.
I suspect that she was "twirled" by a car; by this I mean that she was low enough to have her flight destabilised by, or to clip a car spinning her around, and as she crash-landed, she dragged her claws on the rough ground surface to slow herself down, ripping out one claw and blunting the other. Thumb claw injuries are more complex than just a simple injury/amputation/healing then release. We'll see how Pelican goes as the injury becomes older and starts to heal (or not).
Her name? A wonderful bird is the Pelican; it's beak (cheeks) can hold more than its belly can.
YAY I think our girl is a survivor; follow her progress over the next few days.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).
    tolgabathospital.org/donate/
Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
    Here’s Jenny’s email.

Poor little girl has had a rough go: underweight, hit by a car, and then captured by a huge monster. She finally had a bit of luck that the huge monster was our Meg. MOP seemed openly curious rather than weirded out. Kudos to him! Thank you for sharing, Meg. Fingers crossed Pelican can heal up to be a survivor 💞

17 years ago before I joined wildlife rescue, I never thought of rescuing bats; all I knew about them was that they flew at night, were fruit eaters (these ones), and hung upside down.
I know considerably more now and somehow ended up rescuing them exclusively, totally by accident.

I just never realized there were bats that looked like that. I always think of vampire bats, which are creepy looking. For a long time I just though all bats had that creepy look. The wings are still gross looking to me though.

Vets do the same check on cats and dogs brought in. Car hits them, they fly through the air and hit the ground at speed, and try to dig their nails in to get a grip, but their momentum will drag them along, breaking and abrading the nails. You're right. My heart aches.

Pelican is a feisty little thing, but the glucose seemed to win her over. You have to wonder just how they got where they did. I’m happy to hear she is going to be a survivor, but she needs to put some weight on her little frame. She is a very cute little snip of a thing, but you will see her set right. She's a big girl for her age, but skinny; her growth isn't stunted.
There hasn't been much food around for about 6 weeks because of the rain; rain washes out the nectar and pollen from the blossom which reduces the food value; also it's mating season so they boys are food hogging and guarding so they can get themselves big and buff for the girls.

I love how it doesn't take long for them to accept you poking about. They're not stupid. They know after a few of your offerings that you are there to save them. I can only imagine the warmth and satisfaction in that. We've saved a few critters that were scared and hurt and it's such a wonderful feeling to make them feel better and trust you. But we've only had a few. And you guys have the strength and love to let them go. I would likely cry every time, especially now in my old age, lol. Thank you Meg. She's young and unsure of what is going on; kindness is part of the rescue, along with pragmatism and a dollop of reality.
Bats are very socially intelligent so they quickly learn (within hours) that you're not hurting them and they give you a degree of wary trust. Being colony animals their social intelligence and body language interpretation skills stand them in good stead.

      Welcome to Megabattie, Gabriele:
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

If you ask most Aussies who might have them locally, they will almost universally hate them; as neighbours, they're not particularly desirable.
They're noisy, messy and smelly; if you disturb them they take off and make a lot of squawking noises, and when they take off, the usually offload; ie, they evacuate their bowel and bladder to lighten their load so they fly more efficiently.
I love the batties by I wouldn't live backing onto a bat colony by choice.

I think it's something to do with their social intelligence. Bats are colony animals which means they need to get on with the other bats and understand their vocal and body language.
Many wild animals live a solitary life only congregating to mate and when they're raising their babies.
These bats are also prey animals, which means if you don't hurt them they don't understand your function; the more they look at your actions, the more they get the idea that you're trying to help them.
THeir social intelligence kicks in once the adrenaline wears off, and they begin to parse out your actions and see that you're a predator. They remain wary, but they give you a limited degree of trust as they start to relax.
I had an adult male who tried to turn me into confetti when I rescued him, and 2 hours later he was letting me cut a triple barbed fish hook out of his balls without anaesthetic. (it was in the middle of covid and no vet would allow bat people in the door).

Are you new to my channel? If so:
      Welcome to Megabattie,
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

I talk to them all the time, right from rescue; I think it's important to give them a sense that talking is normal and reassuring, rather than being silent all the time.
I think the bats understand tone of voice, and matching it to my actions gives them some sort of understanding of how things are; I also ask their permission (or tell them what I want or am going to do), and make eye contact when I do this; I don't know if it gives them an element of control over the situation but it kind of makes them a partner in the interaction.
I think it's really important to talk (in your actions or by voice or by both) to them and be part of a partnership, even if I'm the one directing things and they have very little choice.

@@Megabattie Ugh, I meant to type “the way *you* talk to them.” I completely agree with you. Animals, especially mammals and even human children, hear tone and intention well. I think adults hear it also, we just stop paying as much attention. Your patients might not have much control over what you’re doing, but your speech helps them decide on their reaction and restore a bit of control. I do love bats. We only have the little kind where I live. Your work is goodness in action. Thank you.

So many ads tonight, I got to read all of the comments.
I hope Pelican can bounce back from her injuries. She’s a feisty one. Fingers crossed for a full recovery. 💙
Do you remove all of the nycteribiids at home? I would have to, even though they wouldn’t like me or my dogs. We don’t have fleas in this house/yard, but Lily (pfp) and I got ticks once, and I’m freaked out by spider like parasites (all parasites, tbh).
I like pelicans, too. They’re so beautiful in flights of squadrons, like giant V shaped streams of pelicans in the sky. They’re cute when they have “conventions” near the reef at low tide, and they’re all talking to each other.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I don't remove the nycteribiids unless they jump out at me; it's really hard to get them when they squirm down around the hair roots.
It's rainy time, so the nycteribiids are hatching.
