I was a 5ton driver in vietnam .I didnt listen to the music of the singer when he said KEEP ON TRUCKIN BABY . my life since that time has been hard but thanks to the VA they lightened my load considerably
Thank you, this was my War. Drove 3/4, 2-1/2, & 5 Ton trucks.
I served the desert storm and that is exactly what I drove as well. That is, until my battalion was able to upgrade.
Went to Vietnam in 1994 and the US trucks were still running up and down Highway 1 in large numbers but boy were they worn out, belching smoke, glass missing bald tires dented and damaged bodies, but they still ran. The Vietnamese would repair them where they stopped, in the middle of the highway, no worries, remove the entire engine and rebuild it in the middle of the road. One moonlight night, we were stopped on the side of highway 1 at 2am in the morning, you could hear a truck approaching making a terrible racket, there was no glass at all, no lights working, it was pouring smoke from the exhaust and the driver was standing rather than sitting, it was doing maybe 20 mph. It had a full load of crushed rock in the tray and slowly disappeared into the darkness. I will never forget that sight. Tough trucks indeed.
The gun truck "Eve of Destruction" @5:18 still exists today. It is on display in the US Army transportation museum at Ft. Eustis, VA. It looks just as it did then. One of the curators told me it still can fire up and run under its own power but rarely leaves the inside fo the museum.
I went through 67R training there way long ago. Hope some folks won't get offended and demand that Old Gun Truck be scrapped but, this is PC America.
@Some 1poisoned the water hole Yeah buddy. I always hear our enemies would try to destroy America from within. I'm for civil protest but if anyone starts looting and burning then expect martial law. Law and order NOT mob rule! This Veteran will still stand up for the Stars & Stripes! 🇺🇸 Be safe friend.
Ft Eustis, my AIT Station 😁
Also the Colonel a M113 guntruck made from a M54 and M113 is located at Ft. Leonard Wood Texas.
AaronthePony, Ft. Leonardwood is in Missouri, not Texas.
These were the Duce an a half and 5 ton trucks I drove an worked on while in The U.S.Army, back from 1973-1976, while stationed at Ft. Carson CO. We had a really cool Motor Officer in charge of our MotorPool, he was a Warrant Officer 3, who name was as we called him, Mr. Sleeper. Who was like we all were MotorHead/s. He let us do things to Army Vehicles, NOT in the books! Like swap out a 5-ton Multifuel engine, into a Duse an a half! The only difference between them was the 5 ton had a turbo, with bigger injectors and power steering, whereas the 2.5 had neither! We installed the more powerful engine and power steering into the 2.5T truck, with the Governor turned all the way up! At 4,000 rpm’s the truck could get up to 85mph!!
While the trucks are rolling fortunate son plays
Without a doubt 👍
Back B4 I went in to the Army I worked at a CONDEC Truck plant making tow trucks and deuce and a half's to be sent to Vietnam. They said the life expectancy was about 6 weeks B4 it was blown up. The ones towing the fuel tanks were the ones I worked on, then off to the Army. I'm happy they mentioned CONDEC they made so much money off the war.
The M113 APC is still in service around the world, I spent lots of time in one back in the 80s and during the first Gulf war when I was in the Army.
I liked it because not only is it a decent video, but I love Maddie's voice.
My job is riding shotgun in a tractor trailer from long Binh 2 tanshut Air Base.. every night I was amazed how the drivers remember the route they knew shortcuts if they saw un friendlys.. remember we didn't have the technology that we have now no radio in the truck....two m16....that it...sp4 Republic of Vietnam 1971 Saigon..
These are the stories that can be turned into a movie....
From an old truckmaster, thanks for putting out this well researched video!
Now that was great! Just goes to show neccessity is the mother of invention. Thank you.
Thanks for the video jacks Chrome shop.
Great footage as always and well spoken.
*****.
🇦🇺
You guys should do some videos on trucks over hear in Australia we love chicken lights and chrome
We are actually planning a whole section of videos to Aussie trucks including your laws and regulations which are very strange compared to many other countries. We hope to do it justice.
You missed a lot of truck models . Especially the M123A1C 10ton 6x6 heavy equipment tractor
Right
Great show people. Thank you.
1970 I rode Gun Trucks and Gun Jeeps as a machine gunner love it.
Thanks I am looking for a long passed buddy Jerry Robertson who didn't talk much but told me he did a lot of convoy duty and out post. Thanks going to keep skanning for a shot.
My father was on "The Assassin!" that was shown in this video. After a bounty was placed on The Assassin! it was repainted and renamed "The Rebel."
RIP Dad. You'd enjoy this video.
An interesting fact, these trucks were fabricated by the Transportation Units in vietnam and not the infantry. They were used for convoy protection and referred to as "hard trucks", not gun trucks, because USARV said that "gun trucks" weren't authorized.
Good series
Thank you for your service ❤
As Yoo Toob is viewed world wide and America is not the only country on planet Earth, perhaps the title of this should read, American Trucks of the Vietnam War ... us Aussies were in Vietnam as well, and we had our own trucks there.
Okay then, post your videos and photos! Do you have any?
nice history of the gun truck!!
You forgot the lowboy transporters for the Cat D7, D8 and D9's with Rome plows.
Yes - possibly a topic of a whole video in the future.
My Dad was on a land clearing team in 68-69. He was a E7 at that time.

The ˋeve of destructionˋ or a reproduction is on display at the Fort Eustace transportation museum. I drove the jeep ˋDILLIGAF´ into Saigon now and then. It was the jeep of thr RAID 71 Naval advisers at Ben Luc
That eve is the real deal
Thanks for this 👍. our NZ Army used to operate the M113 APC's🇳🇿
Bad ass truckers
Matty is awesome!!!
I have m38a1c jeep model 1961 which helps me in wildlife photography I'm enjoying it's off-roading.
The 2 cycle Gamma Goat was so loud they could hear it coming in Hanoi.
And what a hunk of junk it was too. There were so many problems with that thing the list would fill a book.
It was before my time. They faised them out in the 1970s. The diesel model had a loud 2stroke Detroit diesel.
But it wasn’t part of Vietnam, came shortly after
@@michaelhatcher5264 Marines still had them in early 80's. Ask me how i know? LOL
Are you going to the history of F.W.D.and Oshkosh Trucks?
Good question
Yes both on our list.
Jack's Chrome Shop Any plan to do Pierce Fire Trucks?
The Colonel a M113 guntruck made from a M54 and M113 is located at Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri.
I'm not aware of any Ft. Leonardwood, Texas🤷???
@syoung2333 it's actually Missouri not sure why I put Texas lol
May 69/Dec 70 I was a driver of the M123A1C 10 ton hauling heavy equipment all over with the 20th Engineer Br. Would sure like to see something about them.
Awesome
cool trucks
THANK YOU FOR DETAIL VIDEO
Cool vid peeps
My 530c fire truck was a 2.5 ton truck that was used in the Vietnam War
I love my bobbed 5 ton jeep kaiser I named Curly Bill 😁, because he's the founder of the feast
The M113 with aluminum armor gas engine airborne capable was actually the M114 and deemed unsuitable for Vietnam so General Abrams had them sent out of country.
The info for the M113 is correct but, maybe only a few ever went to Nam. The M113A1 replaced it and did go to Nam in great numbers. There were a few M114s that went to Nam but, there were too many problems with it forced it's to be taken out and replaced by the M551.
@Howie Felterbush I was there from 1972 -Jan. 1975. The M114 was still in use and man those little things could haul-ass. I never did get to ride one but, they are very cramped inside. I drove nearly everything else in the army over many years both in and after I got out as I worked for the DOD for some years at a research development center.
Please do one on the M-715 and M-725 Kaiser Jeep Trucks!
I was hoping someone would mention those.
Yesss. I have a few myself.
how about a video on the m543 army wrecker. drove the b jeez,s out of a35 725 mt. battalion. burnt the clutch out, bent the boom and a ton of flat tires.
446 Trans. Co. Quang Tri....1968
Thank you for your service and sacrifice brother.
444 transport company had gun trucks. From Phu Tia. Out side of Quin Hon. I drove a regular 2 1/2 ton. Truck for 184th Ordnance bn Provisional Guard. 1968-69. The TET offensive
what about usmc vehicles?
I wonder what a dragon wagon would be like as a gun truck.
Gun trucks rock at anytime
How about the Fire "trucks" in Vietnam?
You have an older M37 for the Korean trucks video but M37B1s were extremely plentiful in Vietnam as well as the Kaiser trucks in the later stages. Kind of a massive oversight not discussing them here. M37B1s were everywhere.
It's the M one one three.
You left out the m274 mule
This video didn’t really talk about the gun trucks like I thought it was going to.
What no M62 Wreckers
Where's the soviet made trucks especially the legendary Molotova trucks??
Can you do one of these on Hendrikson.
You forgot GaZ 66, used by the Vietnamese rebels
Who's mady ?
It's not one thirteen it's a M113
