I feel like after watching this, I could go out and buy trace paper and some markers and do this exact same thing. I absolutely could not, but the fact that I feel like I could means this video is the highest level of educational and professional. Seriously, incredible work. I wish I was this talented!
You can do it too trust me! Just start from step one and go from there. I never thought I could do it either, but I did, and I did it well. Sometimes I replay the videos I was watching and just literally mimic the exact technique, touch for touch, until I understand the movements. I swear, just start from the beginning and don't worry about throwing out lots of trace paper as you make mistakes and such, its all part of it.
My like goes to you because you showed me something even my architecture classes could never teach me right. The bubble planning. At the beginning it was so easy to understand! Hope it had been like that back in school, would've saved me a lot of time "designing" in autocad.
Thank you for sharing!I am a student who is about to take exams. Your sharing is very helpful to me!But I can't see the color code of the marker, could you give me a detailed color code in this video?
Hey, Absolutely loved your work! Could you explain the difference between Chartpak AD markers and Copics? Which one makes a better option for landscape rendering and why so? Thanks in advance.
Thank you! The main difference is the chemical in each that transfers the pigment. Chartpak is Xylene and Copic are alcohol. I like Chartpak better since they seem to be "juicier" and have bolder pigments as well as being super easy to blend but they are considered to be somewhat toxic so they should be used in a well-ventulated area. They are both good. I would suggest trying them out and seeing which one you like :) Cheers!
Great informative videos! Thank you. Can anyone suggest what type of tracing paper to use please? I find my promarkers stay wet when I try to render on my tracing paper so they smudge really easily…..
Love all the of these videos. How would you include if you were to be planting underneath the trees with shade plants? Or would that be a separate sketch? Or if you weren’t doing so many trees, but instead flowerbeds and perennials?
For detailed representations of plantings it is best to make a planting plan in autocad in black and white for clarity. For graphic plans like this it is sometimes useful to show the larger trees as transparent and make a shadow to represent the tree being above the rest of the plants. This is a strategy I use in my more current renderings and you can see it in my latest rendering videos.
I’m going to use your training so that I can plot out my gardens that run around my back yard. I need to list and plot out my various perineal plants and trees for height, color, continuous blooming times, and bird attractiveness. Organizing will allow me to control limited space more than costs. I live in Buffalo NY, with challenges of living near wildlife preserves and having a large windy lake both take a toll on the vegetation. We’ve had several bouts of snow this second week of May.
Can you share what kind of markers you’re using and kind of paper you’re coloring on? I have copics and I can’t find any paper that blends the colors as well as yours did in the video. Velum is the closest I could find but it still wasn’t as smooth as your video.
Eric Arneson I need to get those kinds of markers. I’m using Copic. Unfortunately, it’s so hard, near impossible, to find paper that’s printable that also allows markers to blend smoothly.
Ive learned so much from this video and have been applying your technique to my designs with great results. Im not formally trained and i have learned design by doing the work for 25+ years... Would like to know what you charge a client dor a color rendering like this? 7:407:43
You should always set your drawing to a scale with a measuring device like a Architect or Engineer Scale . Make sure to choose a scale that fits the paper you are working on by scaling the largest measurement first to fit on your paper.
Yes, I do, Sometimes digital renderings faster and sometimes hand rendering. it really depends on the project and the amount of time I have. I usually stick with hand sketching on trace for concept development since it is much faster and more fluid and then move on to digital after I have nailed down most of the design details.
Lovely work. What tracing paper do you use Eric? The markers do not work well with mine as create little pools of ink as I lift marker and then dry leaving unsightly blobs …..
Hey can you clear my doubts on following questions? 1. How will I show the difference in levels in a site plan ? For example the project we are working is on 1:500 scale and the site is approximately 3acres. 2. How should I render the pergola, and perforated pavements in that scale? 3. And how should I highlight the fountains and amphitheatre so that it will take to the jurors attention ?
Thank you Eric for sharing! You're a great artist! 😍 You've really inspired me. What base paper or board do you lay down under your tracing paper? Why did you choose Chartpak over Prismacolor? I'm not sure which brand to invest in.
Thank you so much! The base board was a piece of foam core just for this video so we had a nice white background. The thick pen was a pentel sign pen amzn.to/2M1HpA4. I chose Chartpak because most of the classes i took for landscape architecture used chartpak and in my experience they blend better than the Prismacolor/copic since they are xylene based and not alcohol. I would try both at the art store and see which one you like better. another thing i like about the Chartpak markers is that they last forever. We have some in the office that work great from 1996!
Eric Arneson wow! That's impressive! Thank you for the quick reply! For your everyday work, do you complete the finished product on tracing paper or copy to a nice thick paper? I'm brand new to your world so I have so many questions. 😄🎨🌳🌲
Most of my projects are presented either digitally or printed on regular bond paper for client meetings. Everything is getting more digital since its easier to share and edit.
Hey am a 3rd yr architecture student, I must admit that your rendering is lovely to watch. I can render better (am not boasting) but since am in India I won't get your marker's. They are very professional and easy to use from the looks. I believe if I would get my hands on such marker's I could create more beautiful renders. Anyway keep up the good work and post more videos 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Hello Eric, first of all I am a new subscriber and great video’s you have here! A question, the link in the comment section about the Chartpack markers. Are the ‘landscape’ package on Amazon also the ones used in this video? Kind regards, Raymond

You can do anything u set ur mind too
My like goes to you because you showed me something even my architecture classes could never teach me right. The bubble planning. At the beginning it was so easy to understand! Hope it had been like that back in school, would've saved me a lot of time "designing" in autocad.
I think you should definitely do what everyone's asking and make more videos. These are powerful!
Thank you! I am going to try and make some more videos soon!
I love the shadow technic! It's beautiful!!
Thank you!
Im an architect, about to design my first backyard and a little nervous. Looking at these videos really got my motor running

How did you get from trace paper to your actual paper ?
tracing paper can be scanned onto the computer
Wow 😮😊
Bob Ross vibes

Just what I was looking for, says the girl who loves neatness and can’t draw!
Daauumm that's nicce
Hi, I'm currently a freshman studying LAND, could you possibly do a video on your preferred color pallette for landscape rendering. thank you!
Hmm, that's a good idea for a video. Will consider it in the future.
I’m going to use your training so that I can plot out my gardens that run around my back yard. sounds great! best of luck!
do the black markers that you use bleed into the tips of your coloured AD markers?
No they do not.
What do you do if you have quite heavy planting under a tree
How did you go from tracing paper at the end of part 2 to the final drawing at the start of this one?
I enjoyed this the techniques used are useful in many other aspects a good 8/11 I am going to hand off a good recommendation
Can you share what kind of markers you’re using and kind of paper you’re coloring on?

Hi, what paper have you used here? Any feedback is much appreciated
great. what markers you are using?
I use Chartpak Ad Markers
Do you have a video that shows how to draw landscape boulders for accents?
I do not, but that would be a good video to make. Thank you for the suggestion!
HI Whats type of pens do you use ie brand and can that drawing be photo copied afterwards with the colours intact
The markers are Chartpak Ad Markers - amzn.to/2JzLqhv
and the black pens i use are Pentel Sign Pen - amzn.to/31Wwv9Z
And Pilot Razor - amzn.to/2O7uM9S
Can baking paper roll be used as substitute to the trace paper? Or does it not produce the same level of quality
Hmmm, that is an interesting question. I have never tried to draw on backing paper. Trace is fairly cheap so I would recommend sticking with that.
How do you make sure your designs are to scale/realistic when initially drawing them out?
You should always set your drawing to a scale with a measuring device like a Architect or Engineer Scale . Make sure to choose a scale that fits the paper you are working on by scaling the largest measurement first to fit on your paper.
🤙🏻🔥great videos!
Thank you!
do you draw to scale?

The paper is just trace paper. here is a link to it on amazon amzn.to/2Jo6llC

Hey man can u make a video about how to draw flowers(top vieuw)?
Dont go into too much detail just show some bits off color to represent the flowers.
What is the name of the markers you use?
I use Chartpak Ad Markers.
Its nice, but I thought you were drawing it on A3 paper? How can you see a tracing paper through that?
He did the whole thing on trace!
question. why aren't professionals doing this on iPads these days? or are they and I just am unaware of it?
People do use ipads and other tablets to draw as well. Some of my other videos show how i use a surface device to draw digitally.
thats awesome...sir do you mini falls in the front yard design?
Он на кальке рисует ?

Sir i have done my bs in horticulture, would it be good option for me to do ms in landscape architecture?
I think that would be a great idea!
Oh my god. No wonder landscape designers are so expensive. You are commissioning a piece of artwork.
