It should be noted that Friedberg and Seltzer were not really writers on Scary Movie. They wrote a different screenplay that also parodied Scream and IKWYDLS called "Scream If You Know What I Did Last Halloween", which they sold to Miramax around the same time that the Wayans Brothers (plus two other writers) were developing Scary Movie. Miramax ended up merging these ideas, but Friedberg and Seltzer had no input on the script for Scary Movie. Despite this, the duo is still credited on Scary Movie.
Absolutely LOVE this channel. Everytime I settle in for some tv after work, I'm always pleasantly surprised when I see these videos. Bravo. Keep it up.
RIP Joel Schumacher. Dude earned my respect when he took it like a man and apologized for Batman and Robin. Perhaps that's why it didn't destroy him: He had the humility to realize he'd made a mistake and learned from it.
Always felt bad for Joel Schumacher, Batman and Robin wasn't his fault, Stanley Kubrick could've directed Batman and Robin and it still would've been bad. People forget that Schumacher had made good movies, Lost Boys, Falling Down and probably the orignal cut of Batman Forever.
Even then, part of the blame lies on the studio, I think. With superhero movies in particular, it's almost a truism that studio interference detracts from the overall work. The best have been the ones where the director could do as they needed.
"Overuse of CGI" is something a certain bunch of people on the internet always scream as soon they suspect that something on screen is computer-generated.
Jason and Aaron are probably the worst diretor duel of all time. Not a single original joke came from them. All movies are just poop and fart jokes mixed with pop cultures references that get old really fast.
Yup. I think I'm usually fairly even-handed to directors in my videos, but this is one of those cases where I can't find much redeemable except to say I enjoyed some of the Scary Movies. Even then, though, they started downhill and just kept going more downhill.
Unfortunately those movies do seem to still have a fan base. I don’t understand how anybody can watch their garbage and say it’s better than anything Mel Brooks made. It’s unreal
@@sorenpx I’ve seen people say that Jason and Aaron’s movies are funny and people are too offended by the humor. Maybe they don’t say they’re better then Brooks but legit I have seen people praise the duo I’m not kidding
Surprised Jared Hess hasn’t been mentioned yet. He was extremely successful with Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre and had such an awesome visual style, but Gentlemen Broncos which tried to emulate the same aesthetic didn’t do well and has never really recovered. He has found work again as he’s directing the minecraft movie but it doesn’t resemble his other work at all and it’s already getting laughed at
Casanova Frankenstein remains one of the best character names ever invented! I thought Mystery Men was a great film, but to this day I still occasionally think of the name "Casanova Frankenstein" and still chuckle and think I wish I'd come up with that.
Friedberg and Seltzer were not actually writers for Scary Movie; they wrote a script that was so bad that the studio bought it solely to be shelved and never used, and as part of the agreement, they were given a writing credit that they didn’t deserve. They didn’t help create crap (well, what they did create was crap, but you know what I mean).
A faaaar greater number of actors defend Hooper's role as the direvtor of POLTERGEIST and say the Spielberg ghost directing rumors were pure PR spin. Hooper even sued the studio for spreading them, and there is far more evidence the beginning of the rumors were retaliation by certain individuals for Hooper's attempt to make a film in his own vision that often overturned Spielberg's designs - and thus offending the technicians on the set who were set on working with Spielberg and having him get his way. Hooper had the loyalty of his actors, though - Beatrice Straight even reprimanded Spielberg *twice* for his attempts to undermine Hooper.
0:58 They did NOT write 'Scary Movie.' They were in fact working on their own parody of 'Scream' and so for legal reasons it was easier for the Waynes brothers to simply pay them off and give them a writing credit rather than delay the release of 'Scary Movie.'
Sky Captain rips. By stylizing it with over exposure and film grain, it hides the pubescent CGI with style and beautifully imitates old school serials. I need more films to swing for the fences like that
I'm glad to see someone give some attention and respect to Sky Captain. I saw that film in the theater and currently own it on Blu-Ray. It's not a perfect film but it's certainly an interesting one. Its greatest sin is that it is simply dull in some parts and I think that the story could've used a bit more work, but I love the throwback look and feel of the movie and the concept behind it. It should've made a lot more money and Conran should've been given another chance to helm a movie. In regard to Schumacher, only a few weeks ago I rewatched The Phantom of the Opera for the first time since seeing it during its original theatrical run. As a fan of the musical who had seen the stage rendition three times, I remember not being overly impressed with Schumacher's version, but after giving it another chance I have to say that I think it's a pretty good film adaptation. It doesn't have the magic of the live production but it's solid.
Here's hoping that Conran is able to get another film off the ground soon. The guy is obviously creative and I think a sorely needed voice. Some movies you need to see at the right time and place in order for them to connect. I remember I tried watching One Piece as a kid when it first came out, but fell off quickly. Tried watching it again a few years ago and ended up falling in love.
I'm glad you used the word "fun". It's still the main thing I like for when I watch a movie in theaters. "Good" and "bad" are secondary concerns for me.
Oof, a bit of a research failure at 13:39 - you attribute to Verhoeven a film called "Black Rock" and show what appears to be an image from a 2012 American film of that name, but in 2006 this director made "Black Book", a critical success that won several Dutch film awards and was voted the best Dutch film of all time by the Dutch public. Nonetheless, still an enjoyable video :)
You’ve done a lot of videos recently on films that ended carreers. I’m interested in a follow-up on directors taking a break then going back to film making like Sergio Leone, Alejandro Jojorowsky and Terrance Malik
"Fant4stic" was so bad that it led to Josh Trank making an even worse movie with "Capone." This is the same guy who made the really good film "Chronicle." Talk about a decline in quality.
Not sure how familiar you are with his work but acclaimed music video turned film director Harold "Hype" Williams made only one future length film. It’s a cult classic called Belly in 1998. It made $9 million off of a $3 million budget. But presumably it wrecked him because although a very talented director, he never made another feature length film.
Interesting. I know Williams from his music video work (especially his 90s stuff). This is something I'm gonna need to dive into - thanks! Looks like he had a dev deal, but things just never really went anywhere (the case for many directors).
Always surprised to never see any mention of Vincent Gallo in these videos. Checks off just about every box when it comes to a self destructive director making a film that completely destroyed their career.
Gallo could be a good one, but I try to focus on filmmakers that make bigger budget movies (not necessarily huge, but they've ambitions to be Hollywood directors, while with Gallo, I get the sense he's fine staying indie).
I hear that jason and Aaron were kicked off of Scary Movie and their stuff was thrown out. They were only put in as writers because either one of them or both of them complained towards the studio. Don't know if that's true but it's a pretty common story i've heard.
A shame about Sky Captain, that was a great movie. The movie was sound but the casting was bad. The two main characters were terribly cast and had no chemistry.
I think that's more true for the last 25ish years than the 25 before that. They used to be fun. Now, I can't even say they're try-hard because evidently, no one is trying.

Both good candidates. I only didn't include them because I've spoken about Cimino several times before and Harlin in a video not too long before this one.
This is about the last of this kind. I think I'm mentally tapped out on directors whose careers didn't work out as they should've (to be fair, there were a lot). Different kinds of videos starting next week (but still film related).

I agree. If the studio wasn't so focused on selling toys, I think it would have been a very different movie.

The issue with Friedberg and Seltzer based on what behind the scenes footage looks like is they were more frat bros than directors.
