I watch this and all I see is "The Power of Words and Thoughts". That and the fact that they understood this concept in ancient times already. It's amazing :)
Here is a question to throw into the mix: Do self-fulfilling prophecies only exist in a negative way? Every time i hear of a self-fulfilling prophecy it has a negative connotation. Can you have a positive self-fulfilling prophecy? If so then isn't self-fulfilling prophecy more about attitude and how you interpret the the world?
That's what I've been trying to explain to everyone in my circle. Destiny is not true. Maybe your destination is set, but the path you take and the choices you make are all yours to choose. They believe their every choice is written and contradicting themselves say that they will get to heaven if they do good work. If your destiny is already written then it is also final where you will go. In this scenario, you are a puppet with no conscience.
Great video but the main example isn't strictly a self fulfilling prophecy... His prediction doesn't necessarily cause all the bad events to happen (although it could do e.g. Being in a bad mood causes you to have an argument with someone). It's more like selective perception bias - you or view more importance in the events that agree with your belief, and forget any others. Thus at the end of the day you think your prediction was correct.
It was a simple and obvious example to show us the basic meaning of the term "self-fulfilling prophecy". Details are irrelevant in that case, because you can replace it with any other case. This is not the main point of the video.
It was kind of mind-blowing when I first learned about self-fulfilling prophecies. I see it as almost controlling your own life. See you at the TFIOS book signing in Santa Monica in a few weeks!
@RialVestro When you make the prediction or wish, your subconscious can make you do small actions that you normally wouldn't do when not making the prediction. I don't want to invalidate your argument, because in many cases you are correct, things do just happen. But sometimes that snowball effect can kick in. Maybe if Justin hadn't had a nightmare the unfortunate events would have happened anyway, but since he didn't predict it to be a bad day that morning, he may ignore them in the end.
This is the video that made me discover your channel earlier this year when I searched for "self-fulfilling prophecy", and consequently subscribed. But then you disappeared and I forgot about it, and your comeback video from two days ago prompted me to start watching all your videos in chronological order. I hope you keep making them :)
I think people like the idea of blaming something or someone for things. It may be good or bad. Maybe this is why so many people like the idea of good and bad karma, or that the universe has a "plan" for them.
@robinna That's kinda what I'm saying though because nothing that happen to him was anything that he could have done on his own either consciously or subconsciously except maybe on a normal day he would of checked the toilet paper roll before sitting down.
@RialVestro I see what you're saying, but let's say you had no thought or prediction of being profitable that day. You might be less likely to be looking for money, because it isn't on your mind. You might not have profited at all because obtaining money was not your focus that day. Then again, as most of us live in a capitalist country, you could say that money is always on our minds and we are always on the lookout for extra cash. Thus, it is impossible to give a conclusive answer for this.
Great video, really liked it. But I felt that the laughing on the phone together bit was uncomfortable and felt too contrived; like a bad stock photo of a laughing pair of people.
@robinna It's more like that money would have been there weather or not I was looking for it so I would have found it anyway. To give another example I could out tomorrow and say I'm going to talk to the first girl I see. I most likely won't because I never do. But on the other hand if I were to say that a girl is going to talk to me by this reasoning I would have made it happen even though this girl would have done the same thing even if I hadn't made the prediction.
I don't think that's really a self fulfilling prophecy. You have no control over what is or isn't going to happen that day. If it was really self fulfilling then yourself would have total control over making the prediction come true. It's going to be a profitable day. I make an effort to make some money, that's self fulfilling. I just happen to find money lying on the side walk as I'm walking down the street that has nothing to do with my thought that this is going to be a profitable day.

Also, if I knew how to make a gif, I'd be on that.
This sort of goes along with self-fulfilling prophecies and is also a suggestion, I would really like to hear your thoughts on the Law of Attraction.
