Thank you Rodney for the shout out and you pronounce my name correctly, my wife and I just saw the video. I said wow Rodney gave me a shoutout. Anything for the channel man.
As Blackmore said waaaay back in the day when asked why he didn’t change the nut on his Strats, the moment you’re playing something other than an open string you’re depending on the fret and not the nut. So with this config, all the nut does is guide the string to the right location. I like it
@@RodneyMcGI use two basses. One of them has perfect action, but i can't get it right on the other one, it's always end up just alittle bit high. They are practically the same bass, same bridge and all. Maybe this does the trick.
I’m a late bloomer haha … Instant Sub brother !! This and your other videos have been very helpful. You have a nice way of explaining things . Smooth . I struggle with trying to get that low action on all of my basses . Once I get them to feel comfortable and right where I need my Action to be - I plug in and do a test run . Buzz Buzz Buzz on the 12 th fret . Then I have to raise again . Arrrrggghhhhhh I’m going to give this a try on just one of my basses and see if I can finally put that Buzz to rest . All goes well I will buy 3 more . I wonder why not more manufacturers do this. My main bass has a zero fret, and I'm really happy about it! It's a Clover Apeiron H.5, very similar to a Sandberg California TM.
I think it actually comes from an old predjudice. A lot of early inexpensive basses had them. It actually makes a bass eaasier to set up and the person doesn't have to be good at cutting a nut, so it was looked at as a cheap option. People didn't realize it was not only easier, but superior.
I recently bought a used lower line MTD Kingston 5 string and it has a zero fret. Never really noticed it while playing but I do know that B string really stands out on it no matter what position I play. Other 5 strings note played on the 5th string can around a little dead and muddy.
I always do my own 316 alloy stainless steel nuts generally, they take a little while to shape but I like the consistency of sound. This seems like a good alternative for fretted instruments. I am working on a fretless bass with a stainless steel fingerboard on the side though 👀 . On an unrelated note, Have you ever played a 4 string with 16.5 mm or a similarly narrow spacing at the bridge but pbass spacing at the nut? I have been experimenting with this on some of my custom basses and it makes the spacing feel much more consistent all the way up the neck. It’s is very different and highly enjoyable imo
hey dude i want to learn how to play dark ages its one of my favorite songs but i cant find any tabs that are good anywhere. do you happen to know what key the song is in it would help me a little figuring out some of the parts of the song. thanks.
I am glad to see ya brother McG! I am a fan of the zero fret, since I have multi scaled guitars and basses they all have zero frets. I just got a wild hair up my you know what :) and decided to mod my Ibanez SRMS805 which I think it one of the best basses for the dollar. I just got hipped to multi coil pickups. I am going to use a Tuner multi coil pickup (very interesting pup) and add a Lusithand Double NFP filter :) Great way of getting close to the tone of a WAL bass without spending $12k. :) Never used multi coil pickups before so I am excited :)
@@RodneyMcG Maybe one day you can do a video on multi coil pickups . And I would like your opinion on the Lusithand NEP filter if your familiar with it. Using a Filter vs EQ. I always enjoy your feedback and reviews
Older USA Peavey basses are just about the BEST basses out there, and then you consider the price and it's a WIN WIN. I own only Alembics and USA Peaveys, and up here in Sonoma County all the Alembic owners I know also own USA Peavey basses. I am so unfamiliar with zero frets, so I will enjoy this video. Alembic has an adjustable brass nut, so maybe it's similar ?
The peavey thing has been overlooked for a while. Seems like they are getting discovered. The alembic but won't do the same thing as the nut is still the end point rather than a fret
@RodneyMcG that would be a great idea!! I have to say, Rodney, I miss seeing videos from you regularly. I do hope you are doing better, I hope your health is improving. Stay strong and stay safe!!
@@tonycarel1785 I'm working on putting out more. Unfortunately i don't get to determine my own schedule very much these days. If my plans can follow through, there will be a few cool things coming up soon. Thanks for the encouragement!
Am I the only one who has John Wick vives? Maybe I'm crazy. But hey that look suits you so well, mate. Never saw any zero fret, my basses doesn't have it and didn't noticed any on shops. Not sure if I'll do this, at least on my most expensive signature one (it's a Jackson Chris Beattie from 2006). The neck has all "glued" because it's painted and lacquered all in one piece, I don't want to think how pain in the ass will be the day my luthier needs to change the nut hahaha If I would have know, I wouldn't have bought it… But hell, I fell in love for it. I'm dumb.
If your bank works for you Aziz gumma that's all but matters. Some people tinker a lot with their gear like myself, and some people find a home and just stick with it. You do you. And it's funny, I've gotten the John Wick thing before! 😂😂
Uh..... that's a B-Quad! I passed up buying one in the late 90's, talked myself into it, went back to buy it..... and it was gone! That's the one that got away.
@RodneyMcG That they are. By the way, I moved to another country and haven't been on much. You're looking like you're doing better. The last video I saw of you was about a year ago, and you were dealing with serious fatigue. I don't know what it was, but I'm glad you're obviously over it.

I've used them on my mods and you're right! You were the one who mentioned them a while back. gold Tone is way easy to work with. A+

It can be a challenge sometimes. It sounds to me (can't be sure without having it in hand.) That you may need a few frets leveld.
