Haha - in the radio version he says, " Did anyone ever tell you the FACTS of life?" The TV version here he says " the WAY of life". Guess that was too heavy back then for tv!
@@cathyortiz1280 Yes! And I think the Stones with "Let's Spend the Night Together ", he wanted them to change it to "Let's Spend SOME TIME Together" lol!
I grew up listening to Gary Puckett and the Union Gap in the late 60's when I was a kid. They were a bright light during a tumultuous time in our country's history. This is just money! Damn -- Puckett had some pipes!! Great reaction, Harri!
This song is 56 years ago and it still gives me goosebumps...the melody, the horns the swell of his delivery on the chorus/hook...it's one of those singles that toys with "pop perfection". Harri, this song is about a minute longer on the single-it was chopped short for The Ed Sullivan from which this was taken off TV.
@devildog5354 They had so many acts on that show most songs were shortened. They also had a full orchestra in the pit so they could cover the record arrangements exactly even when shortened. proof they were live.
My friend In Texas was at a music store and a guy walked and the struck up a conversation. Afterward he remarked to the owner how the guy was very knowledgeable in music. Owner says "you know who that was? That was Gary Puckett!" My friend didn't recognize him older
Always loved their songs!!!! He has such a great voice !!! But I can just imagine how our parents were cringing at us 9 or 10 year girls singing these songs!! 😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
Hi Harri! Thanks for this reaction! This group is one of my favourites! FANTASTIC music! ALL THEIR songs were great! Peace and Blessings from Australia.
Actually my first favorite group tho I was listening to music 10 yrs prior to 1968. Great song loved it then , still do. Woman Woman and Young Girl are equally as good. He's still performing actually a few free concerts to help kids I admire that.
Thanks again Harri for the reaction. You are really going back in time tonight. Haven't heard this song in a very very long time. "Young Girl" is my next recommendation. If it came out in modern times I think it would very controversial, but back then no one thought anything of it including me since I was only 13 at the time. I would love your take on it.
My gosh! Haven't heard Lady Willpower or the Union Gap in ages. It always amazes me how the lyrics come right back and I can sing along like I did when it was getting constant radio play. That combo organ was really working in this one!! So good to hear it again. Thanks for a great reaction and a quick run down memory lane.
One of the greatest voices ever. I noticed they changed the lyric "Did no one ever tell you the facts of life" to "way of life". TV censors I guess or the discretion of whomever the TV host was of this show. I know Ed Sullivan was a bit strict about this on his show. It was either Mick Jagger or Jim Morrison who was told to change a lyric.
Love your reviews of the Union Gap. Gary's Voice got me when I first heard Woman, Woman on my AM radio back in early 1968. Thank you so much for sharing..
He's got such a BIG voice - reminds me of the The Righteous Brothers or Tom Jones. He probably didn't need a mic. Great tune. So much great music in the 60s.
I love this song!!! One of my all time favorites 💕 and I agree the song was way too short, but when you are singing on the Ed Sullivan Show, you get the short version 😁
Gary Puckett, the original Michael Bolton. Very unique voice and tone. If he were a wine it wouldn’t be a fruit forward big bold cab or merlot, it would be a top pinot noir, very refined and oh so smooth.
gary and the boys definitely had a unique look with the civil war union army costumes. saw him 3 years ago with the 'happy together 'tour and his voice is still perfect. the other band was paul revere and the raiders with their revolutionary war outfits and had a long string of hits as well more on the hard rock side. both of these bands deserve a bit more recognition.
Great musical memory from the '60s. Another one I'd like to suggest: "Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)" by John Fred & His Playboy Band. A great one-hit wonder, a swamp boogie track with cool instrumentation and Beatles influence; went to #1 on the American charts in 1968.
There is a song Gary Puckett sung called Home, about G.I.'s fighting in Vietnam. It is a very moving song. Being an Army vet, it brings me to tears every time I hear it.
I'm a big fan. I've seen him about 10 times live. Most people don't know he is a very good guitar player. One time he played live outside here in Houston for a downtown event and his backup was bass, drums, keys. He handled all the guitar and they covered some of the biggest hits of the day along with his songs. At one point people were lined up along the outside balcony of the Alley Theater during their intermission listening to him.
I didn't become a fan until the last 5 years, although I'm 60, so it was within my favorite era. It has an adult flavor, imo. This one is my favorite. Gary had a charismatic appeal that I think appeals to adults, too. I hate that they had to change "facts of life" to the "way of life" for tv.
The best Gary Puckett song wasn't even a single; it was an album cut called "The Beggar," with a very dramatic strings and horns production which matches Puckett's powerful voice. It's worth searching for!
What many people on this thread don't understand is that is the connection/tie-in of the Union-style Civil War themed costumes for the band. It's meant as a connection to the band's origin of Union Gap, WA.
I lived next door to his Grandparents in Pelican rapids Minnesota and his dad would come to his Grandparents every summer and we had a lot of great time 😂😂
I never noticed before but it seems like the Ed Sullivan censors may have been at work again. The lyrics were changed from "Facts of life" to 'Way of life," kinda weird but then again, they tried to stop the Doors from using the word "Higher." 😆
These guys had a string of hits in the late 60’s. Back around 8th grade or so, a classmate and I got into a discussion about who was better - the Union Gap or the Beatles. Okay, so I got that one wrong…
There was some great pop songs in the 60's and 70's that's 4 sure ! here's a few suggestions with great singing: Arizona by Mark Lindsay, Don't pull your love by( H,JF, & R ), Indiana wants me by R Dean Taylor
Gary is singing live to the studio recorded instrumental track. The band is "synching", so to speak, and clearly there is no brass section even on stage.
"Young Girl" "Woman, Woman" and "Over You" are more fantastic hits by them.
Funny that all these songs sound so similar.
Gary had one of the best voices ever
Haha - in the radio version he says, " Did anyone ever tell you the FACTS of life?" The TV version here he says " the WAY of life". Guess that was too heavy back then for tv!
You're right, this version sounds wrong because of that
I noticed that, too! Ed Sullivan was very conservative! The Doors refused to change the lyrics & were banned afterwards.

Different country but everything else - ditto!
So well said. Talk about hitting it out of the park, you sure did!

Underrated as a band, and they had exceptional taylors!

Pail Revere and the Rauders started the uniform look . A lot of the groups from back then wore matching suits.....
Memorable songs
Wonderful harmonies.
Luxury arragements
And an extraordinary singer.
That were Gary Puckett and the Union Gap.
You really can't beat the music from the 60s and 70s. The 60s especially was great for music. Just love it!
I agree~ The best!
Gary always had a great voice ❤
No lip-syncing here. Great performance.
He really had a fantastic voice.
He still does.
Very powerful voice. This group had many power ballads. Gary is the pride of Idaho.
Great reaction, I forgot what a great voice he has.

Great pop/rock 60's band. Lead vocalist, Gary Puckett had some pipes!

And Thank you Harri
Don't know how, but our high school got the Union Gap to a concert in our field house. Great group. Thanks.
My favorite group from the sixties/seventies. Fell in love with his voice
Love Gary Puckett. Grew up with them. Thanks for doing these songs. Brings back good memories for me.
Radio stations didn;t like songs to last much more than 3 minutes during the 60's . They claimed that was the norm for the musical 'attention span .
my very first concert, my older sister took me.
If the Stones were the bad boys of rock, and they were, these guys were their opposite. Super great memories for both.
Thank you for posting! I and all of my high school and college friends were absolutely crazy about him. Great talent and easy to look at too. 🎶🎹🎶🎹🎶🎹🎶

Paul Rever and the Raiders started that military look. Try Just Like Me from them my friend.

Paul Revere & the Raides started the military uniform thing back in the early 60's.
Harri B, here are three more really good Gary Puckett songs: 1) Home 2) Let's Give Adam And Eve A Chance 3) Don't Give In To Him. Enjoy!
Ed Sullivan made them change some of the lyrics slightly when they were on there. Also on Young Girl.
That was considered long hair at the time.
