  • Sonus Paradisi released a new & free (!) sample set today. The Rudolf Janke organ from the Evangelische Stadtkirche, Bückeburg combines North German and Central German elements of the Baroque period. In this video I explore the different possibilities of the instrument. Even some German romantic pieces can work, because of the variety of soft 8' stops. I used a mix of various perspectives (direct, diffuse & rear) during the recording. Sometimes you'll hear a more direct sound and sometimes you'll hear more of the room the organ is in.
    Sonus Paradisi shares a generous free demo of this sample set. You can try the complete sample set: Hauptwerk and Oberwerk in all perspectives, Brustwerk and Pedal in two perspectives. The Brunckhorst piece is recorded with only two perspectives (diffuse, rear) to give you an impression.
    Sample set by Sonus Paradisi:
    www.sonusparadisi.cz/en/organ...
    00:00 Pachelbel - Toccata E-moll
    02:00 Bach - Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier BWV 731
    04:54 Hanff - Auf meinen lieben Gott
    06:42 Fischer - Praeludium, Fuga, Chaconne
    09:57 Hanff - Helft mir Gottes Güte preisen
    12:04 Sorge - Helft mir Gottes Güte preisen
    14:12 Pachelbel - Partita 'Ach, was soll ich Sünder machen'
    22:11 Strungk - Magnificat
    23:49 Buxtehude - Erhalt uns, Herr BuxWV 185
    25:59 Mendelssohn - Andante D-dur
    30:04 Bach - Nun freut euch, lieben Christen g'mein BWV 734
    32:45 Brunckhorst - Praeludium & Fuge E-moll

    Beautiful. I really enjoyed the Partita on "Ach was soll ich Sünder machen". Even though I have already commented this on one of your other videos I am really grateful for the specifications that you add on each piece.

      Thanks for mentioning that, Storee. For me it's important that the music and the organ/set I play on are central and not me as just a player.

    Bach: "I need to write a long and complicated fugue after also good prelude"
    Fischer: "30 seconds will be enough"

      @RalphLooij  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fischer was probably the first true Minimalist: "Less is more".
      But seriously, he wrote many small preludes and fugues in his collection Ariadne Musica, very nice to explore.

    Thoroughly enjoyed Ralph! A wonderful program and a great way to show off the divisions of the organ and their tone colour. Some pieces I know intimately, some are new to me. So some treats and good old pieces I know well. I especially appreciate your sense of timing. You have a gift for making the music move and come alive. Now how many times have you hit your head on the roof :)

      Thanks for taking the time to listen to this video, Mark! It's always quite challenging to make this larger videos, because I want to show some nice facets of the organ/model but also don't want to play all wellknown pieces, so I'm glad you enjoyed the mix. And yes, I've hit the roof many times with head and shoulders ;)

    The organ in Bückeburg is not only Janke's biggest organ but also one of his most beautiful instruments which sounds even better in its original location. Very fine presentation with careful registrations and historically informed interpretation.

      Thanks, Michael! I wasn't familiar with organ builder Janke before, but this instrument is certainly proof of being very capable of historically informed organ building.

    A fabulous demonstration of the wonderful new sample set of the Rudolf Janke organ at Bückeburg produced by Sonus Paradisi, which sounds truly glorious. You present us with an organ recital par excellence, Ralph: bravo! (And how true with the Fischer that 'less is more'!)

    • @RalphLooij
      @RalphLooij  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for listening, Thomas! Well, organists wrote many books about chosing registration. In the end it comes down to what sound you like yourself and what's appropriate for the organ, the music and the time the piece was written in... A combination of that will do ;)

    Thank you very much for such beautiful edition! Very sad, that we know only two Brunckhorst's organ works(

    • @RalphLooij
      @RalphLooij  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Yaroslav. I know three Brunckhorst pieces: his praeludium in g (the one often related to Bruhns), this one and a small atypical Sonata in A. But indeed, two organ works and the Sonata is a keyboard work in Italian style. But since the line between organ and harpsichord wasn't that straight in the baroque, you could perfectly play it on organ.
      It gives a nice view on how versatile Brunckhorst was as a composer: partitura.org/index.php/arnold-matthias-brunckhorst-sonata-a-dur/

    Very nice demo and promising sample set. Out of curiosity, what were your pipe coupling and detuning settings?

    • @RalphLooij
      @RalphLooij  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! They mostly were on default settings, so around 64. But having played a bit more with the settings after the recordings now I very much like it when the detuning is at 127.

    • @sonicwave32
      @sonicwave32 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RalphLooij Having messed around with it myself now, it seems there's a nice amount of natural detuning even at 0% and the detuning slider is pretty subtle. On some other Sonus sets I find that it's either too perfectly in tune or the detuning is excessive, neither of which sound super realistic IMO, but here it sounds pretty good regardless of the slider position. Overall I've been impressed with this set so far, especially for free :P

    • @RalphLooij
      @RalphLooij  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sonicwave32 Exactly, but don't confuse the detuning with the temperament, which is slightly unequal.

    What mixture of front, rear, etc did you use?

    • @RalphLooij
      @RalphLooij  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this case it's direct, diffuse, rear. I used mostly a mix of diffuse and rear. In softer pieces I add a bit of the direct perspective.
