      Penn Station is one of my favorite old world buildings! Also When I first heard about Tartary and the “old world” structures Penn Station and The Traymore Hotel were the two that stuck out to me the most. I’m hoping it stays up. I can’t imagine trying to edit it again 🥵 lol

    Excellent video. After tearing down Penn Station, there was a plan to demolish Grand Central, but Jackie Kennedy, et. al. stepped in and prevented that from happening. Like so much real estate in New York City, the land ends up being more valuable than the building. By the end of WW II and into 1950s, passenger rail transit had declined considerably so the economics of this large station were no longer cost effective. Pennsylvania RR still owns the land, but sold/leased the air rights (the space above the land) for other construction purposes. Since the destruction of Penn Station, we now have legislation preventing destruction of historical buildings, found worthy of preservation. It seems like the Modern Madison Square Garden is larger than its predecessors and so more economically feasable.

    A couple of corrections are in order. The architectural inspiration for Pennsylvania Station was the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. It also inspired the architects who designed Chicago's Union Station. Jacksonville Union Station, now called the Prime F. Osborn Convention Center, incorporates many of the design elements of Pennsylvania Station but on a lesser scale.
    New York City had no hand in the decision to demolish Penn Station. The Pennsylvania Railroad decided to sell the air rights over the station to raise cash, as the railroad was losing money following the collapse of long-distance train travel in the years following WWII. There were no landmark laws at the time, so New York was powerless to stop the demolition. In fact, the uproar over the loss of Pennsylvania Station was the impetus for creating landmark protections and led to the preservation of Grand Central Terminal, which would have suffered a similar fate.

    Great video, thank you. Penn Station was such a magnificent structure. I’m glad I’m not the only one who is viscerally affected by its disappearance. What is your thought on when it was *actually* built vs what wiki claims?

    • @FRESHboosters
      @FRESHboosters  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Honestly, I try to keep an open mind and see nothing as definitive. It helps keep me level headed when researching this sort of material, but it also leaves me susceptible to criticism because I don’t adhere to one specific belief. However, part of me wants to say this railway was pre-existent. How much of the Penn Station that we see in the pictures was dug out, and “founded” rather than built? Could be a lot of it, could be zero percent. But just the fact we can weigh the idea that this structure predates the time period given, and could possibly be old world in nature (including the fact the first rail cars in Penn were electric for some reason), I would happily admit says a lot about how far this research has come. I think railways in general have a very mysterious history, as well as roadways / pathways / etc built by our great ancestors, and the native peoples of said lands. Could Penn Station be from the last culture, covered because it was so close to the waterway, dug out partially by the Dutch, and then retaken over by the USA? Possibly. But it could also be as modern as we are told. There are “construction photographs” which seem to confirm the dates. But I take all history with a grain of salt.

    • @MarvelousOldWorld
      @MarvelousOldWorld 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@FRESHboosters I agree with you fully-your reflections on Penn Station and your general approach and philosophy. In looking closely at Penn Station, it does seem that much of it heralds from different epochs with very different architectures and building technologies. The top vs bottom, inside vs outside. The inside lower portion for example seems oldest and most grand, with newer interior ramps and causeways. That they would tear it down at all seems monstrous. But I think you’re right in that there is only so much we can know even as we keep turning over rocks-and that willingness to accept uncertainty and humility will serve this quest much more than latching onto another dogmatic narrative. As an aside, I lived (& studied architecture) in Newark NJ for some time, & the photos of old world buildings that once stood there are breathtaking. There are still some impressive gems remaining-well worth a look. Cheers!

    In my midwestern hometown way back in the 1960's there was an incredibly beautiful building that served as city hall. It was amazingly ornate and architecturally unique. The so-called authorities decided that it had to go, and a battle ensued between them and a group of activists to save it. Of course the oligarchs won out, and I never really had a chance to go into it, so didn't get to see its beauty first hand. Many people were devastated to see it happen.
    It seems that the darkside knew back then and before, that this time of awakening was on the way, and it was imperative that as much of it be destroyed as possible in order to protect the lies about history.

      That was a destruction picture you see. A lot of the "construction" or pictures liked that you see were pictures that were staged where they were either adding to the tops of old world buildings after the reset, rebuilding the tops of building that were destroyed during the annihilation of the population and reset or just dismantling and reconsructing the buildings specifically for the pictures before the handlers filled the cities with the inheritors. That is why you will see pictures as early as the invention of photography that will have old world buildings that are supposed to be brand new buildings as history writes, that look like old ruins with burn marks and soot all over them, getting brand new tops installed. If you do your research, you will see this over and over and over again.

    From what I've read, the beautiful 2nd MSG was never able to make enough money to pay for itself. Penn Station provided a lot of work for my hometown: Milford, MA. It was all constructed (except for the lions) using Milford pink granite. Unfortunately, after WWII rail travel (not freight trains which didn't use the station) pretty much collapsed as America built its highway system and the love affair with the car began. Enjoyable video.

After watching a few of his vids I’ve also had a really hard time believing that we were in horse and buggy building these massive super structures. I mean just looking at them they at so amazing. What I found interesting was the construction photos you had in there, any way to verify their authenticity? The only “construction” photos I’ve seen of old world structures has been people who look to be cleaning up or painting what I assume are preexisting buildings, there are never any building materials or even an adequate crew. In fact it’s almost always a ghost town. In your video you show a couple shots where there are actually cranes and some construction materials. First I’ve seen like this, definitely think it’s worth looking into... thanks for the awesome vid

    Well, I don't know what to think about this info I am about to write so take your own quest to figure it out. The image at 5:46 as it tilts up to the to looking at one corner of MSG2 has two instances of numbers displayed. One looked like light bulbs the other a marquee sign. Both show the number 1492. Not sure what that meant, perhaps the street number I thought initially (but wrongly as the address is 2 Pensilvania Ave), I made a search for MSG and 1492. Looked at images and found this odd connection. That image was supposed to have been taken, guess when, 1892. Yup, exactly a 400 year difference. Might be nothing. Might be everything. Though all is a misdirection or blatant lie we are the eyes and hearts that with our minds or fists will beat the shit out of the narrative until we get to the bloody pulp called the TRUTH.

    Notwithstanding the narrative... it appears that the second iteration was the first and the first the second. Nice work bringing this info to light. I’ve been to the Garden several times and never have thought of its history.

    The original Madison Square Garden and second rendition were located on 23rd St. and Madison Ave where Madison Square Park is located today.This was in fact the original location of James Madison’s homestead was during the 1700’s.
    The third rendition of Madison Square Garden which appeared only as a brick warehouse was located at an entirely different location on 8th and 50th St.The current rendition of Madison Square Garden sits at 8th Ave and 34th St.which was the former location of the original Pennsylvania Station.It is said that the demolition of the original Pennsylvania Station was the city’s greatest loss until the demolition of The World Trade Center when struck by two airliners during the 9/11 attacks.

    Just a shame Madison "Square" Garden isnt square no more 😢 ! The first and second was definitely a better design than the 3rd and the one currently ! Great history thou !!

    Beautiful work. You should research the building they drop the ball from in times square every year. Just trust me look how glorious it was until 1960 when the tower it had was removed and all the ornate stone work stripped to it steel frame and just covered in concrete slabs as it is today. Why in god's name would people do this?

    3Peat! Awesome vids!
    The story I've gotten recently was that Penn Station was demolished because it couldn't be MAINTAINED. Huh?! !!!????!!!
    And btw I'm in the rock/excavation field since '75 and "pink granite" is the top of the chain for difficulty in working and transport. Especially with regards to "clean" products.
    Hardest. Heaviest. You're over the target brother!
    Cheers!

    The picture of the hipodrome has a big top tent set up in the middle of it, it definitely had no permanent roof.

    Sometimes progress isn't always the best. But to be completely honest, I think the current Garden is beautiful and as far as architecture goes, it's design was completely ahead of it's time for 1968. 53 years later, it still stands and carries the moniker as "The world's most famous arena"

    New sub here, long time mud slider. Great content. I'm not sure how I've never found you yet on the tubes. Maybe I already have and just thought you were already in my subs. Maybe Levi sent me here?. Who knows lol. Sometimes I find myself awakening from a deep sleep screaming out loud "The Romans conquered the world!" And my TV will be playing a random TH-cam channel with similar content and a calm voice will be speaking in detail about massive Mormon temples that were built by starving men who were living out of tents and the only technology they had were horses and buggies in the middle of the desert and I fall back to sleep. Then sometimes I wake up and a random channel, like your channel will be playing, like it was tonight and I can't get back to sleep. I ended up watching every last second and I had to help someone in the comments, subscribe and write this comment. Still half asleep, but well worth it. 🤣👌 Cheers!
