    I'm not American but my eyes fill with tears when I see what was destroyed in those terrible times. The finest transport terminal ever built, anywhere. If the money can be found to replace the lost World Trade Centre then it certainly can be found to rebuild Penn Station not solely for the benefit of New Yorker's but for the benefit of civilization.

      Also not an American but I've been to NYC and through Penn Station. I'd not seen how it looked originally until now and although I don't particularly want to go to NYC again as there are so many other places I've not been to, if the station is rebuilt in its original style I'd love to go back to see it. This must happen, and happen soon!

      For years I had taken the LIRR into Penn Station when I was younger. One day I saw a photo of a cathedral of Train Station hanging on the wall of one of Penn’s many labyrinth. I asked my dad, who told me it was the old Penn which had been destroyed. Little me was horrified people could do that. The more I have learned, the worse the crime appears. The destruction of that building was a crime against all humanity

    I hope one day Penn Station is rebuilt as it was and that I can get a chance to see it. When I first found out about Penn Station, it wasn't in a history class from my youth, it was in adulthood through a documentary on Amazon Prime video. The documentary didn't begin with how the station had been demolished, it simply started with explaining how the great building and it's railways came about, when the film finally got around to saying the station had been taken down in the 60s, I felt rage and deep sadness. I had been thinking about how much I wanted to see this grand building, I thought I'd uncovered a marvel somehow never mentioned to me. Give us the chance to experience a piece of history that never should have been destroyed, rebuild the station!

  • @IcelanderUSer
    @IcelanderUSer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    If you look at google maps in NJ around the seacacus station you may see remains of the station out in the sunlight. When I look now though I can’t seem to find them. The railroad dumped their own masterpiece on the edges of their own property. I wonder what kind of condition most of the big blocks are in. When they demoed it they didn’t care about saving the blocks for future use.
    I can’t tell you how awesome it would be to rebuild. The east side of the station could be changed to match the west side. Or build skyscrapers on the east side to pay for the project. Just keep the look of the original and set the skyscrapers back from the perimeter. Originally that side had offices I think. I wonder why they didn’t build a tall building from the get go. The Pennsylvania RR did build the giant hotel that does sit there to this day. Across seventh ave.
    Another random thought. The Pennsylvania RRs good friend the HandM railroad which we call path today ends a block away on 6th Avenue. I think it would be perfect if they would turn the tracks to run in the basement of the hotels block and end the trains facing penn station in a four platform station. As far as I know the sixth ave trains run below the path trains at this station. Which would allow them to turn. Either this idea or run the path trains further north to 42nd Street. Right now there’s a long passageway that I think was designed for the train to run in. Bringing path to 42 would be great for people going to Newark airport. It would be easier than taking LIRR as it’s hard to find a seat and or the train just crawls the entire way to Jamaica station.
    rebuilding penn station would be an incredibly popular tourist attraction. And money maker. I wonder if it would be cheaper to rebuild than a modern station. Especially if they can reuse the foundation. Even if they skimped and left many columns exposed instead of covering with real stone would be better than nothing.

    They did a beautiful job with the renovated post office. Moynihan Train Hall may not be the original, but it is a worthy tribute with it's own history and impressive look now. Video also says it only will server 20% of the passengers, originally it would be for Amtrak only. The plans changed and it will serve both Amtrak and the LIRR, handling a much larger load. I think with the East Side Access project it may serve some metro north trains as well.

I'd even be happy if small but important details were brought back in reproduction. I'd be thrilled if they'd exhume some of the stone buried in New Jersey. The old song Chattanooga Choo-Choo by the Andrews sisters named it correctly in the lyrics. Only post wrecking ball was it changed to Penn Station. The old Pennsy, the standard railroad of the world as its publicity claimed, was dead. Penn Station rightly described the underground fire trap/vermin pit left behind. Now 2021, it is partly but only partly redeemed in the D.P. Moynihan train hall across the street.

    Yes, Rebuild the original and with the addition of the post office area that would add so much space and organization. But like Grand Central and the old Penn Station make the trains available from ramps with an information booth in the middle. The present penn station is an organized mess. Look at Grand Central and the orginal station and put common sense back into -how to get to trains. Instead of the rat race madd dash to trains. They can grab the granite from the ground where it was dumbed in Jersey. Wow.

The North River Bridge project, Alexander Cassat's decision to build Penn Station, buying up the Tenderloin District & getting all the permits to build, digging the tunnels, etc. An engineering feat that rivals the building of One World Trade Center and the WTC Transportation Hub today.

      I agree 100% but I don't think it will happen although I would love to see Penn Station rebuilt in the spirit of the original. They need to relocate the Main Post office across the street which half of that building is wasted space and use that space to construct the New Penn Station. It sits on the foot print of the tracks as well plus people will raise hell if they try to demolish Madison Sq Garden.

      @@sw5114 The more I've thought about it over the years, the more I realize that while old Penn Station was impressive, it wasn't innovative. In a city where space is at a premium a building that takes up 2 whole blocks should probably be productive, innovative, and impressive. Old Penn only ticked 1 of those boxes while MSG ticks 2. Its innovative(for the time) and very productive.
      I can't help but compare old Penn to Grand Central and realize that while Grand Central was never nearly as grand as Penn as a station building, its usefulness and innovation are off the charts, plus its plenty grand compared to any other existing station building anywhere. Modern engineers still study its design and use Grand Central's layout as a template for modern train stations and airports 110 years after it was built.

    It's a pity that people are so indifferent toward architectural masterpieces when greed comes into play. Absolutely incomprehensible. Unfortunately there are more examples of such barbarity all over the world. It is worthy to mention Grand Magasin "Dufayel" in Paris or Crystal Palace in London. Another story is tremendous amount of demolished buildings in Warsaw, for example Kronenberg Palace, probably the most luxurious private building ever existed in Poland, which stood in reasonably good shape till 1962 when commies decided to tear it down, to make room for hunk of junk also known as Sofitel Victoria Hotel. Humanity, what's wrong with you? Fortunately there is consolation in knowing that many reconstruction movements spring up across the world such as RebuildPennStation, or Saski 2018, dedicated to Saxon Palace and Brühl Palace, and similar one in Budapest for Main Guard and Riding Hall or in Berlin, where reconstruction of Stadtschloss is taking place at the moment. Greetings from Warsaw and hope we will enjoy our reclaimed heritage in the near future.

    That will never happen, sad to say. And commuters deserve to scuttle. The fact is, despite its length, Penn Station underground is efficient, and is actually still the original station. Being even further from Seventh Avenue, on the other hand, is quite a problem for Amtrak passengers. If there was an underground shuttle of some kind, like electric trams for passengers, that would help.
