- Visited Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction, Arizona on our return trip eastward from California. Beautiful park with majestic views of the Superstition Mountains to the East. The Superstition Mountains Wilderness Area is adjacent to the park boundary on its east side.
I had been looking forward to hiking The Flatiron....and I wasn't disappointed. Technically, it was more boulder hopping and rock climbing than "hiking". Pack your trekking poles away once you begin the ascent...you will need your free hands for some Spiderman moves. A pair of tight fitting gloves come in handy (mine - $7 at Tractor Supply). Also, travel with a partner if possible ...and pack plenty of water. I consumed 3 liters. I would avoid this hike in the summertime...it was in the 80's on November 3rd. I was the 1st one for the day on top of the mountain...had a Zen moment on top....then the crowds started arriving. Actually, one in the crowd told me about the airplane crash site memorial nearby on Ship Rock Mtn....
Return trip going down turned out more strenuous and fatiguing. Hard part was figuring what crack in the rocks you came up thru....then creeping downward. I saw no trail markings...just followed the worn paths....which were few and varied. Got passed by a few Millennials coming down like a walk in the park (one couple with their dog!). I was constantly aware of my mortality...figuring I could be just as dead falling 15 ft. off a boulder as to 1500 ft. off The Flatiron. I started the hike at 6 a.m....back at the park campground by 4 p.m. Can be done quicker...but why?
