I think they greatly improved the combat from star ocean 4 but the story was definitely the weakest one. compared to previous adventures it just was not as memorable. I think it was a very stagnated step where its balanced out what it does good and bad but i think star ocean 6 was definitely a step in the right direction
@@Rainos62 I will say with Integrity and Faithlessness being the last on my Star Ocean list to play and currently it's I like Integrity and faithlessness more than Divine Force.
I finished 1 and 5. Dropped 4. Maybe I give another chance to it, but at least I finished 5 and enjoyed it, despite the flaws. For me so far Last Hope is the worst.
I'm actually enjoying this game. I passed on it way back in 2016 but I've recently gained a new found love for JRPGs I haven't had since the early 2000s when I was playing games like Grandia 2 and 3, Dragon Quest VIII, Tales of Symphonia/The Abyss and of course Final Fantasy X. I went ahead and picked up the entire Star Ocean series including First Departure R and Second Story R and plan on playing through all of them starting with this one. I think I'll go with Divine Force next and circle back to First Departure.
After playing through the entire series up until 6 I get how they tried to make it more like 3 but they also did a lot wrong. 3 had a compelling story that was packed with cutscenes abd character growth. This one just feels flat.
That's the most tragic thing I've ever heard. He wanted to draw upon one of the most popular in the series and ended up making the worst in the series.
Lots of Star Ocean stuff lately! I'm not a big fan of making the game more like Dark Souls, but let's hope the franchise doesn't get completely abandoned.
I'll admit compared to the other Star Ocean games it gives the feeling of the old ps2 games with the world of a ps4 game i get its not everyones cup of tea but i dont understand why people hate it so much i think its actually a fun game
I remember always having to manually control the healer character because the AI was so brain dead they would never heal and if they did, it would always be too late
Looking forward to giving this one a try. Been a Star Ocean fan for awhile, sadly though I missed out on New Hope, Integrity and now Divine Force. Finally getting a chance to play through, decided to follow chronological order Integrity - Divine Force. Integrity seems to have the most mixed views, though even the positive reviews seem to ride the line of "it's an alright game."
As a Cuban myself Im thankful is not that Fidel....anyways this is a game I have dormant for long time, maybe is time to give opportunity before the remaster of second story cames
I think, Relia and Feria made people dislike this game. Relia's hat is stupid. Character design was so off that it made people say the game is bad, when in reality its a solid Star Ocean game. Once you get passed mr fish eyed blue haired Kirk. Seriously, thats pretty much all that plagues this game. The character design single handedly turned people off and they created illusions the game was as bad as people say it was.
Well not too long ago I bought this game, the last hope and the first game all together for like $21 so I'm looking forward to playing these games they look pretty cool. I really don't have no expectations going in. I just thought this looks like final fantasy if it was SIFI lol
I have been a huge fan of star ocean since #2. I bought this not long after I got my PS4 and gave it a fare shake. I got 5 hours in and just couldn't. I tried 3 more times to get into it and its not for me.
Your review is the best one out of all the ones I've seen so far. Because you're not like the game spot review from 7 years ago where it was just listing everything that they didn't enjoy and even some things that were just personal taste 😂 I'm currently thinking about buying the game but I'm not a big Star Ocean fan (since I'm editing this I don't know where to start) so I don't have an invested interest in the story. So it's a little difficult for me to decide if I want to pick it up or not because of the fact that it's an in betweener type game that takes place between two previous games which just seems a little bit weird because it just kind of limits what you can do with a story because you can't make radical changes or change things too much for the status quo the next game that already came out.
The fifth Star Ocean was just fine not as tiresome as the fourth Star Ocean. As for the sixth Star Ocean it was okay, but with bad and/or lazy mechanics.
I feel like they packed too many characters and their stories. But over simplified the game play and no innovation on the main part of the game. The story wasn’t great either.
I did like having all your party members in battle at once and fiore was hot but aside from that the game was pretty subpar and had way too much backtracking. I still don't think they've really nailed with the 3D models, sure the girls have nice bodies but their faces still seem a bit lifeless to me
It is, it was the second game in the series I played after 4. And I found it bad at that time. After finishing 1, 3, 4 and starting 6? It still is bad, and I don't even like 3.
Yes, it is. Before this video is even released, it's terrible. Coming from someone who is a tri-Ace fanatic and has completed SO3 over 100 times. This is not a good game bruh lol.
@NaNoRarh Probably more. Been playing it multiple times a year since it's release. And went crazy on challenge runs up until 2010 or so. Such a good game
Still maybe slightly better than Divine Force I think, except for the story. Both 5 and 6 are pretty much bland games, each having their own glaring issues. Divine Force had potential to be a good game though... The Last Hope is my all time favorite Star Ocean.
i played all star ocean game.. The divine force is the my number 1 favorite star ocean game, fallowed by second story r, last hope, part 3 part 1 part 5. The divine force is the best in terms of story, scenery, towns, and gameplay and exploration
Yeah, I like this one better than 4. It felt next-gen, and felt like they were thinking outside the box. I appreciate the freedom of camera movement during the cutscenes and enjoyed exploring. Could've been better, for sure, but I think it's worth people's time.
There are only three things I know that were praised about this game: the role system, the 7-party combat, and the graphics (sometimes). Everything else about is just bad, especially the length of it. Seriously, the trailers hype it up as some space epic like the last one, but no, it's only 25-ish hours long with tons of backtracking. SE & Tri-Ace should be ashamed of themselves for charging $60 for a clearly not AAA product that was rushed. But Tri-Ace suffered the most cause this game sold abysmally.

I didn't really dislike this one until they had those 2 boss fights where you had to defend ange. i deadass dropped the game after that 😂
Haha, I remember that part and know what you mean.
SAME. I remember loving this game until those parts. Incredibly unfair and frustrating. It wasn't hard, its literally unfair
That's the most tragic thing I've ever heard. He wanted to draw upon one of the most popular in the series and ended up making the worst in the series.
Blue Sphere is a competitor for that, but seems like it to me!
Awesome review! I need to get into Star Ocean! I'm hoping I will this year with the new Switch release coming out and maybe Divine Force!
Lots of Star Ocean stuff lately! I'm not a big fan of making the game more like Dark Souls, but let's hope the franchise doesn't get completely abandoned.
I like 5 better than 4 i really didn't like 4 by the end it dragged alot and the story swirved really hard in a bad way rather than 3's wow twist.
Thanks for your thoughts on it!

Yeah, there's definitely some time before then!
0:58 and also for ps3, but it is only from japan the ps3 version, and i have the ps3 version 🎉

Thanks for your thoughts on it. It definitely is a polarizing one.
The focus on both, especially at the end of the game, ruined the story.
Tokay, let's go XYGOR
Tokayyy
Star Ocean 5 is the Pokémon Scarlet & Violet of the franchise.
I'll take your word for that one!
i aint gonna lie. I miss the old thumbnails. Great content as always tho!

Tried to like this game but couldn't dig in. But I could see some good ideas
5:13 マジで!?技が過去の作品の使い回しなのは知ってたけど、曲まで使い回してたのか

I actually did the like the mobile game until they shut it down which really upset me.
Couldn't make out half of what you were saying over the "background" music. 😥
Interesting, the mix sounds pretty good to me, but I appreciate this feedback regardless.

Way too much backtracking to extend game life but it was OK.
Dead man walking ☠️
Thanks for leaving your thoughts about the backtracking - I should have noted that.
Can you makke a final fantasy 8 story vidoe
My only complaints with 5 were the plot and the main story being too short for a Square Enix game.
Yeah in this Star Ocean you pay as Fidel. Not Justin's Dad this one's different.
I had no idea this one even existed. But then again, I haven't owned a console in a long time.
Does it look like something you would play?
I love this game even know have problems all games have problems
As someone who grew up with the series, Yes.
More than fair belief!
This has to be one of the worst video game titles of all time. What’s next, Star Ocean: ingenuity and entrepreneurial ingenuousness?
I feel like they packed too many characters and their stories. But over simplified the game play and no innovation on the main part of the game. The story wasn’t great either.
Thanks for leaving your thoughts here!
I only got 5 hours in before stopping, but I was enjoying it.
I actually couldn't stand the 3rd one.
Interesting, that's a new take for sure!

I recall this one coming out and being lambasted... I appreciate the nuanced review, but I've got better games to try. ^^;;
Fair enough!
Sweet
Glad you think so!

Thanks for your thoughts on it, I agree!
Hated this game because it was trying way too hard to copy Star Ocean 3.
