    Music by Karl Casey ‪@WhiteBatAudio‬
On March 16, 2005, after a three-month-long criminal trial in Los Angeles Superior Court, a jury acquits Robert Blake, star of the 1970s television detective show Baretta, of the murder of his 44-year-old wife, Bonny Lee Bakley.
Blake, who was born Mickey Gubitosi in 1933 in New Jersey, made his movie debut at the age of six, in MGM’s 1939 movie Bridal Suite; the studio soon featured him in its Our Gang series of short films. After changing his name to Robert Blake, he starred in the 1960 gangster movie The Purple Gang and numerous other films. In 1967, Blake memorably portrayed Perry Smith, one of two real-life murderers at the center of Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood, when the book was adapted for the big screen. As an actor, Blake was best known for his Emmy-winning work as the street-smart plainclothes policeman Tony Baretta in the ABC series Baretta. The show ran from 1975 to 1978, and Blake won an Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series at the end of its first season.
During his criminal trial, Blake’s defense team portrayed the aging actor as a rather pathetic figure and argued that Bakley had a pattern of sending letters and nude photos of herself to famous men and had trapped Blake into marrying her by becoming pregnant. The couple’s daughter, Rose, was born in June 2000, and though Bakley initially claimed that the child was fathered by Christian Brando, son of the celebrated actor Marlon Brando, a paternity test proved the baby was Blake’s. Blake and Bakley married that November. Their brief, unhappy union lasted until May 4, 2001, when Bakley was shot to death as she sat in a car outside a Los Angeles restaurant.
Blake was arrested for the murder, and the prosecution produced two former stunt doubles who claimed the actor had recruited them to kill his wife. During cross-examination, the stuntmen were revealed to be cocaine and methamphetamine users. In their acquittal of Blake, the jury made it clear they didn’t believe the stuntmen’s statements, and also concluded that the prosecution had failed to place the murder weapon in Blake’s hands.
In November 2005, eight months after the criminal trial ended, Robert Blake was found liable in a civil trial of “intentionally” causing Bonny Lee Bakley’s death; he was ordered to pay $30 million to Bakley’s children. Rose remained in the care of Blake’s eldest daughter, Delinah. Though he did not testify in the criminal trial, Blake did take the stand during his civil trial to deny the accusations.

He had the bird trained to poop in a litter box . He raised it from a baby...anyhow . Appreciate you always...looking forward to more great videos in 2023! Best wishes for the new year my friend..✌👍

I've always loved Robert Blake. I loved Barretta. I loved him with Jon Stewart (PBS) in the early 1990's. He was always cray cray... I adored the fantastic sense of humor he showed as he described his f#cked-up upbringing. I pray he didn't murder Bonnie, but someone did and that's on them. (yeah, his eyes are especially crazy since he had 'them done'. )

Bonny did have a checkered past but didn't deserve to be killed that way. Robert had anger issues from an abusive childhood. He had a rough life as a kid. He was so talented from being in the Little Rascals and up to Baretta which was a great show. I always thought and still think if he didn't kill her himself, he had her taken out. That not guilty verdict surprised me. I agree with Laura Stobel's comment this looked like a mob hit, something taken right out of the movies!

Something much better than the criminal court system did for the victim and her family. Hard to believe Blake is still alive.

Good vlog on Bonny Lee Bakely, Scott. Another victim of celebrity or celebrity-adjacent derangement. Like Lana Clarkson (Phil Spector the killer found guilty & died in prison), Phil Hartman (Bryn Hartman the killer, killed herself hours later), Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman (OJ Simpson acquitted and hunting killer on golf courses and at sports card & memorabilia trade shows), Dominique Dunne (John Thomas Sweeney found guilty & served 2.5 years of a 6 year sentence, changed name & moved to PNW), Rebecca Schaeffer (John Bardo, found guilty but insane, life imprisonment) and even Dorothy Stratten (Paul Snider the killer who offed himself after killing her) - famous or infamous victims who did not deserve to die in such horrific and cruel ways. Peace to their families, and in Bonny's case, may her killer die a thousand deaths before he meets his maker.

She probably figured she had Robrert Blake by the ba**s.Also you didnt say anything about the two old stunt men who claimed Blake tried to hire them to shoot her. There was a phone card bought and used for calls between Blake and these guys but instead of going to a pay phone he called from his home phone. In the end the jury decided these stuntmen (who claimed they did have drug habits) were just trying to get publicity and threw their testimony out.

Bonnie made her income scamming money from men. Mostly older gentlemen , she would get engaged to these men and have them give her a lot of money. It wasn't being an actress because she never had the talent. Some men had families that would try to get the money back. Any one of the men or families could be motivated. When she married Blake it was understood that there was no love involved because he felt he was scammed into the marriage. Bonnie swore she was on birth control and obviously that was a lie. She was sleeping with I can't remember his name and who wants to get married under those circumstances. She lived in a smaller house that Blake owned behind Blake's house and Blake paid all of her bills. Blake was smart enough to plan her death if he was going to and this was not planned by him. So, pick a name from her past and it could be that man. I think her past caught up with her. Just my opinion.

Who leaves their gun at a restaurant?? He clearly knew more then he was letting on. I remember following this story, the media painted a ugly picture of her as if to imply that she got what she deserved, and made him to be the victim of her craftiness. In the TV show Beretta, Robert Blake played a plain clothed police officer/undercover cop, kind of like Starsky and Hutch. It lasted for 4 seasons from 75-78. His catch phrase was "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time"... Interesting.

Blake also played Perry Smith, one of the killers in the 1967 movie 'In Cold Blood', a story by Truman Capote. Perry Smith later received the death penalty by hanging. The 'gun' alibi worked for Blake as he had received numerous threats against his life previously and was licensed to carry for personal protection. Bonnie's death appears to be more like a mob hit, and that may or may not exonerate Blake, yet I will agree the misplaced firearm is more a pre-scripted statement to distract the jurors at the trial back-in-the-day.

Thank you Scott , I haven't thought about this case in so long. If I ever get to California, I'd love to leave some flowers and visit her grave . Bless Bonnie I'm sure she just wanted a family and a home to enjoy like anyone else.

Love Robert Blake. Good actor. Always believed he had nothing to do with it. Bonnie was a liar, manipulator, con artist and a ..... She played with fire and she got burned. I'm not saying she deserved it but she pissed off a lot of people.

Let's put it this way,she did not deserve to be murdered(almost all people dont deserve it) but the stuff she was caught up in, it wasn't the craziest thing to happen.Even one of the investigators said something similar off the record.

Man, what a jacked-up story. I remember this when it happened. All over the news. Then the case dragged on and on and on. I just knew that Blake would not be found guilty - not because he was innocent, but because prosecution just couldn't get the case together properly. Did he do it? Well - look at those eyes....but who knows. Great coverage of this tragedy to Bonnie, Scott. Respectful as always. Always love your vids. Hope you had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year. Until the next one, Take care, my friend.

I always believed he got away with murder ... at least here on earth, but the afterlife is another story. Nothing he said or did made any sense that night. Maybe she had a questionable past, but it has nothing to do with the crime and she certainly didn't deserve the death penalty. RIP forever more.
