    Today at Badgerworks we address a common issue - people want to take up making models as a hobby, but it's too expensive, so we're going to build this charity shop-bought model as cheaply as possible.
    All the materials for this build (apart from the compressor) came in at under £30 and will provide enough to build dozens of models.
    Music:
    The SteamGeezer Shuffle - Agricultural Light & Magic
    In-episode:
    MCMRecords.co.uk
    Affiliate links (tools and materials that let you help support the channel at no extra cost to you)
    I'll add to this list as time goes on.
    Please note I buy all of my own tools and materials and all opinions are my own. I use everything in this list. You may find these items cheaper from other vendors, the links are for reference - it pays to shop around.
    3.7v Miniature Smoke Machine parts:

    Vape coil set with wicks - amzn.to/2U1g9Xw

    5v 25mm fan (x5) - amzn.to/2ZcEbEZ
    Please note that these items are only for guidance. You will need to ensure whatever parts you buy are suitable for the project you have in mind. Also keep in mind that, if misused or abused, a smoke machine may melt or even catch fire.

    Another very good video. It's good to see someone catering for perhaps the younger aspiring modeller- I've always thought that building kits is educational and teaches patience, perseverance and new skills as well as a feeling of satisfaction on completion. A little more of these attributes would always be a benefit to all youngsters.
    I'm fortunate enough not to have to worry about watching the pennies too much, but I don't believe in more than I have to so I do take note of your budget tools- there's a Works and TWO Poundlands where I live!

    That was a great approach and challenge. Maybe the real budget challenge would be to hand paint rather than airbrush. But that point aside , its a good looking Eurofighter and very respectable build.

      @SteamGeezerUK  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks. That's true, one could use a brush. I've seen people get amazing results with brushes, but I wanted to show people that you don't need to spend hundreds on a high end airbrush to get decent results.

    • @chancerNW

      I must admit I've been using a Iwata clone airbrush and compressor from Expo tools for the past 7 or so years. Basic, but it very much does the job. You can still get the air brush and compressor for around £100.

    Just found this vid after watching a previous one. Firstly want to say thank you for showing that you can build on a budget. Also would be fantastic if you can link or give further information on the airbrush, washers and fittings. I would imagin lots of us, me included want to dip our toes in airbrushes but not pay a fortune.

  • @ian1957ruth

    For an airbrush you need a compressor. They are not usually bargain price items.

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's specifically why I left the compressor out of the prices. Having said that, compressors can be had for relatively small sums of money, depending on what one is after. I have a small shop compressor that I bought years ago. It cost me £75 in a sale and came with various air tools as well.

    Whoaa! I have rediscovered model-making at age 61 (did all the Airfix and Revel stuff as a teen, now retirement inspirational TH-cam model-makers such as your good self have inspired me back to a hobby i did not realise how much i had missed...now the good news we have a pound shop and works in my home town here in south wales plus i recently bought a compressor with exact copy of the Chinese airbrush you demonstrate here only question is where can i get the nitrile O rings from?...anyway many thanks for inspiring and even more importantly for your tuition and tips for us lowly mortals to aspire to!

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, and I'm glad you've found your way back to the hobby. As for the O rings, you can get them from ebay, but I advise you measure the ones you have first, which can be a little tricky - I used a vernier caliper to measure the outside diameter and the thickness of the ring. I did look at sets of O rings, but the ones in airbrushes tend to be extremely thin, maybe 0.5mm, and most boxed sets I've seen don't go down that thin.

  • @fredtedstedman

    I like your attitude , when you think Airfix started at 2 shillings (10 p.) in a plastic bag , prices have become ridiculous . It has now become a cheque book hobby -like so many others ! Wales UK.

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can still get cheap models, it's just very easy to spend huge amounts on "professional" products when there are often cheaper alternatives. I think it's important to pass on some on the tricks I learned as a kid to other people.

    • @fredtedstedman
      @fredtedstedman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SteamGeezerUK Totally agree . I went back to aircraft last autumn and have been very pleased with Plaza Japan (Hasegawa and Fujimi.) and Jadlam (Free postage -which can make a huge difference in cost !) and Creative Models in UK where for £15-20 I can get decent 1:72 kits . I also do armour and r/c model boats .

    Thoroughly enjoying this and others of your videos. Fairly new returner to the hobby but picking up loads of really sound advice. Can I ask though, you use IPA as a thinner- which I bought as an airbrush cleaner. Is proprietary ‘acrylic thinners’ any different or better? Just off the the Pound shop with a list of things to look for!!

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I know, quite a few people use IPA as a general thinner for acrylic paints, but I've had some poor experiences with it, like Tamiya paint splitting and Vallejo paint turning into glue, but I do buy 99% IPA so that might be why. Because of that, however, I tend to stick to the manufacturers own thinners and I have no issues. I've not used "acrylic thinner", but if you can find some cheap you might as well give it a go :-)

    As some one else has said the biggest expense I can see in your whole list is the compressor. The cheapest I’ve been able to find is £75. I’ve never airbrushed before and I don’t model that often. Forking out that kind of money will hurt way too much. Any ideas or recommendations for compressors that don’t make you wince at the till.

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid I can't really help there - I use a shop compressor because I have other air tools I use, so I'm not really up on modelling compressors.

    • @SteamGeezerUK

      I don't have a link to the exact one as I bought it a few years ago, but this looks just like the one I have - amzn.to/2Vr8Jkn
      I honestly don't know if it would work from a can, but I think it might need an adaptor - I don't know what fitting the can has, but I think this brush is 1/8 BSP. You can buy adaptor kits that should make anything fit pretty much anything else. I bought one similar to this set and it's worked with everything I've thrown at it - amzn.to/2JuObQT
      Keep in mind these are Amazon affiliate links. You may find the same things cheaper on ebay etc, but you might have to wait longer for them. If you order direct from China you'll probably have to wait a few weeks.
