Wow -- straight and to the point, with quick and identical demonstrations, to hear for ourselves and make up our own minds. The cheap one didn't sound bad, per se, but was nowhere nearly as in tune as the expensive one. The cheap one also didn't have the brightness of sound as the expensive one did. So maybe if you're just starting out, buy the cheap one, and when you become a steel drum master you get the expensive one :)

25 years ago, I bought a steel drum in d minor, and shortly after I had the opportunity to join a weekend workshop with various steel pans: tenors, 2-treble and 4-bass.
Last year I wanted to buy a chromatic tenor but didn't really find out where to buy one. I ended up with some handpans that are lots of fun, too. 2 of them cover every half note from C#3 to D5. I can play any harmony or diatonic scale, but not really chromatic tunes.
But in addition I really need a good tenor steel pan like your 3000 £ pan - maybe one category less bright and ringy (and I wouldn't mind if a bit cheaper, if that made sense). I live in Germany. Could you please tell me how/where to find one? That would be great!

The expensive model seems to be made of better materials and will probably last longer. To me the tones sounded level and clean, not wobbly like the cheaper one. It also hand a larger audio spectrum overall. The cheaper one had very pronounced mid-range that caused muddy lows. I think the biggest difference was the tonality of the more expensive model and worth the price, especially when playing with other musicians trying to hit the same tones. In general they do sound similar and both acceptable for a gig. But if you listen to it again listening for the excessive wobble and muddy lows. Kudos to the instrument maker H. Guppy. He seems to take pride in his work.

I don't think they sound the same at all. The rust one sounds more full, but the notes seem to cut themselves off.
The chrome one sounds very tingy like a bell and the sound resonates longer.

I can hear the difference. The expensive one is just sonically pure I guess. There’s a lot of high frequency sounds and sharp vibrations and less reverb it seems. The sound doesn’t travel as far around the instrument I’d guess due to the imperfections and it being unpolished and such.

there is absolutely a difference in tonal quality, resonance and consistency of tone.
the guppy pan is well-balanced through the entire range with notes that don't veer out of tune when struck loudly. The raw steel pan has an uneven countersink (the steel between the notes is not uniform) and most of the inner notes have out of tune harmonics.
With tuning the rusted pan can sound better but the Guppy (r.i.p) will retain its tuning for decades and remain brilliant.

@@Steeldrumbands The sound quality is way worse in the cheaper one. The pitch is off on the cheaper one. At first I thought you were being sarcastic. I don’t have perfect pitch, but I have been around music instruments and working soundboards and mixing for…17 years? The cheaper drum is that one singer who always sings off pitch and needs to be turned way down in the mix. For my first 12 years going to church, we had a man who was a professional steel drummer, and he would play it every Sunday, and it was always a treat. And it sounded amazing.

Started the morning listening to Brown Girl In The Ring by Boney M.. Next thing I know I’m adding steel drums to my wish list. Then a TH-cam rabbit trail... Next thing I know I’m bursting out laughing at you telling us with a straight, stoic face that those two pans sounded EXACTLY the same! Glad I wasn’t sipping coffee. It would have been sprayed all over my wife’s pots and pans that I’ve been banging on all morning. Well played!
(PS: I bet that old steel drum could be cleaned up and tuned rather nicely. But comparing it to that beautiful, new instrument might make give it an inferiority complex! PSS: I owe my wife a new saucepan)
