When I was in school, end of 70's in the music room there was a half-finished steel drum. Some kids and the teacher had tried to make one, but after a few years the kids quit and the teach gave up. Shame, but evidence that this isn't easy.
So you can maybe estimate the right size for the notes using volume ande resonant frequency. This is amazing wizardry, they are taking something that is so hard to model mathmatically and doing it implicitly! I love it!

@@Steeldrumbands I am From Nu Yawk ( New York USA) so we have our own dialect to Saint Burnsy, I thought the same thing about how beautifully these people spoke. I have loved steel drum since I was a little boy just so cool always wanted to try and make one....well now I will just watch others
