    Don't know why people are asking about the cam, it's the crank he's using. And you only want to move it to set the timing marks (the big nut he used is just a spacer to help secure the bolt to move crank). Once you remove the belt you don't want to move the crank or cams or you'll screw up the timing mark alignments. And the trick he used to remove the crank (shaft) bolt is a socket and breaker bar wedged up against frame. I quick crank of the engine (do not start) loosens it. Typically there is a locking pin near the flywheel (with most cars) then you remove the bolt with a breaker bar or impact driver. But this method works fine without having to find a "special" locking pin tool. I recommend replacing the crank bolt with new since it's usually tightened at a very high ft lb torque spec and the old one may have been stretched and or stressed to failure if reused.

    • @HealthSupercharger
      @HealthSupercharger 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK so you recommend a new bolt on crank shaft pulley with the new timing belt. What else needs replacing? Water pump? tensioner pulley or tensioner itself? any rubber hoses?

  • @johnargue2977
    @johnargue2977 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Got it, tensioner is hydraulic ,lots of pressure. Remove 2 bolts and to push it back in, i put on a jack between the car. Actually lifted car a bit before going in. I used a peace of coat hanger to put in hole. Worked.

  • @MitsuUltra
    @MitsuUltra 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The loud ticking noise means there is something up with the oil level... I use to have it... I spoke with someone at mitsubishi who told me that the oil wasn't flowig through the engine correctly and usually cleaning it, which entailes putting 0 weight oil in the car during oil change, letting the oil run through the car then emptying it would fix it... Mine stopped after I added oil.. But you may have to do the oil change thing to clean the sludge out of your engine..

    I remember my sister bought one of these brand new in 2002 and I liked it... but I liked my other sister's 2000 Xterra much better! I'm looking into these again because the second generation Rodeo is my all-time favorite SUV. They just are more fun to drive for me than the 4runners and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen Pathfinder ( although I did love my 95 Pathfinder) but the Rodeo can have transmission issues, and the Xterra feels too small for me in the cabin. This leads me to the Montero Sport. From my recent research I'm hearing that they have little to no transmission issues and have a ridiculously reliable motor apparently. Sounds like they're quite possibly somewhere between a Nissan or 4runner from that time period... is this true?

    @coolhand447 There is a special tool I did not have so I had to manually do it, I did not want to show the wrong procedure, here is what I did. You leave the pin in the auto tensioner, loosen the pulley and rotate counter clock by way of 2 holes on pulley until the tension pressing on the auto tensioner allows you to slide the pin out easily. torque the pulley to 35ft/lb spin engine 2x and recheck pin if it still slides out easily then your good.

    • @michaelbateman2178
      @michaelbateman2178 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i know this is an old thread, but the video shows he puts the belt and then jumps to the auto tensioner. When i rotated the crankshaft pulley the timing marks did not end up correct. What are we missing? before he jumps to the next scene you see him grabbing a wrench to the camshaft sprocket, what did he do?

    • @martinwiebe125

      Michael Bateman did you ever figure it out? I’m doing a timing belt on one and I can’t get the camshaft marks 100% where they are supper to be. Every time I put tension on the belt it mover the cam sprockets 2-3 mm and it’s driving me insane.

    Nice vid. I am doing this exact same procedure right now, but my problem is after i set the timing, and rotate the crank, the crank pulley spins until all the slack is out of the belt without cams spinning, so after i spin 2x, the crank is 1 tooth ahead of where it should be. Also what is up with the crank sprocket? It slides back and forth? When its all the way back as close to the block as possible, it has play in it, but when you pull it outward seems like itlocks into place?

    does the noise go away after warmed up? if not were the timing marks lined up correctly after you rotated the engine by hand 2 times? if the noise goes away then its valve lifters which are plugged up, if not then you may have engine damage to mis-installation of the timing belt

    Thank you very much for making this! I am doing the same job on a 200 montero sport. I also replaced the cam and crank seals. It was a bitch getting the cam sprockets off! I read some info on a Montero Sport forum that showed pictures of water pump replacement, It said not to forget to put new o ring on water pipe before installing pump. But there is no water pipe on my sport 3.0L. The pump just bolts in, I don't see any water pipe, and no o ring with kit except for thermostat o ring.Whats up?

      T Clark valve seals are a long job. I have done them without removing the head but you need a good compressor and the right tool I used a similar tool like the Neiko 50646A along with the Lielse 36050. If your going to do this yourself become familiar with their operation

      Jason Pez do you live in Northern Virginia around D.C.? If not can you recommend a technician? Although their pricey I feel stronger going to the dealer with at least a 12 month warranty? Timing Belt are very involved, you need the right tools and know how not someone making a quick buck. Additionally, I need valve cover gasket and tuneup. Have you heard of cam seals leaking in the rear of the head and in the front.
      The Montero is a solid truck except for the valve seals.
      Sure wish you were around for us to negotiate the repairs. I have access to a full garage with most of the tools???

    Very heplful video! Is there a timing belt inspection window somewhere? I need to check mine. What's the easiest way to inspect it, or how much needs to come apart?

    • @buggzyy
      @buggzyy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a small inspection window on most. Its on the RH (pass) side cam belt cover. But to be honest its useless to inspect this way. Timing belts don't usually show wear unless they are way overdue and coming apart. The manufacture recommends changing the belt every 5yrs or 60,000mi.

    Hey Jason, how did you set your tensioner pulley along with the hydraulic tensioner? Thnx in advance!

    • @DaytonCarCare
      @DaytonCarCare 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Self adjusting. The new timing belt tensioner will have a pin in it holding the tension. Once it's installed pull the pin and then it's tight.

      Jason Pez I've changed countless water pumps on gm products but never tackled a job that involves the timing belt with it. A lot of this vid shows the back of his coat or his sleeve when you need to see what he's turning and where. I'll figure it out but it's always good to be able to see it first to shave time.

    • @buggzyy
      @buggzyy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      tideivlife1 the water pump that was replaced was just the impeller half you can purchase the entire assembly but this was more cost effective. Once you remove the timing belt the pump is pretty straight forward.

    hey buddy how did you get all the slack out of the belt ive read that you shoud move the right sprocket a couple teeth counter clockwise is that what you did, cuz the video got interupted right when you had the wrench on the right sprocket. did you use the special tool that fits on the tensioner pulley along with a torque wrench to set the proper tension to 32 in lbs, help a brother out, cool music btw

    • @buggzyy
      @buggzyy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ctrl Alt DeFeaT you will need to use locking pliers to remove the nuts that hold the fan on. Then replace the damaged nuts.

      +Jason Pez Hey! i dont have locking pliers but i got some channel locks that worked after squeezing the ever living crap out of them. im actually doin this to replace the cam seals but im doin the belt too while im in here. the shop quoted me 2100 for the seals, belt, pump, etc... so im doin it all myself. im not gonna lie, when that bolt stripped i was seriously thinkin about just savin up for the shop repair, i didnt think id be able to get them off with pliers. thanks alot man your a life saver!

    I have 2000 Montero its a great runner but they have the WORST design when it comes to engine, in order to change $20 spark plugs you have to remove like half of the Engine, my alternator died twice due to leaking valve cover gasket , in order to change gasket you also have like entire day of work,,,,
    I just tightened the bolts that I was able to reach and since then I still have the same alternator its been over a year, VERY POOR ENGINE DESIGN. also it has Torsion bars instead of simply shocks and springs..

    • @bryan2316
      @bryan2316 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if you have the proper tools you can do it in less than an hour. I changed the head gaskets and both rings behind the heads in bout 40 mins. it's all bout tools. manually would've taken longer. I barrow a friend's compressor and gun that removes bolts in a second and did it fast. the rings I had to do it manually. those took 5 mins each. But I had the same issue as you. originally thought it was the head gaskets but it was the rings behind the heads that was the issue. I had already removed the manifold so I just changed the head gaskets.

    • @velizarmilutinovic2947
      @velizarmilutinovic2947 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +bryan2316 Yes proper tools helps, but do you realize that other cars take 5 min of work to replace spark plugs, you don't need to remove 30 bolts disconnect bunch of electric plastic connectors that break easily and then buying and placing new gaskets just because you had to remove them in order to get to spark plugs even if they didn't leak

    • @bryan2316
      @bryan2316 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes it's very true. you have to remove the manifold to get to the sparkplugs. but my wives sparkplugs are worse. she has a Subaru and her sparkplugs are on the side on the bottom of the engine. with almost no space to reach with your hand alone. it's insane how they designed in such a way

    Great Vid. Some people are so critical and like to leave stupid comments about music...forget them. I'm down to removing balancer but it wont budge. Any suggestions? It looks like yours just pulled right off. I went to get a loaner tool(claw puller) but the one they gave doesn't fit in the bay. Is it just floating there and it just needs some spray and a couple hits to loosen? thanks

      You could try to give it a few whacks with a rubber mallet, or you could do what I did and lift the radiator up and out of the way so you have more room. I used string to hoist it up and let it hang by the hood, you could remove it entirely but if you have an internal transmission cooler (which mine has) you might want to avoid getting air in the lines so you don't have to flush it later
