    Whoever told you that the Metromover is useless is a liar. It’s because of the Metromover that Miami has had high density living the past two decades. And the system is actually free to ride! The Metrorail however doesn’t go everywhere but the rail does hit key areas.

    • @tumi6ocdn
      @tumi6ocdn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Yeah, I think he may not have understood the distinction between the two. The Metromover is useful for getting around Brickell, but that's literally it. The Metrorail is great for getting between South Miami/Coral Gables and Brickell or the airport, but that's about it. Having come from cities where public transport is actually meaningful, Miami's system of buses and metro is overall pretty useless as you can't really get anywhere reliably.

      It's cute, but its a 150 million $ investment into something that serves meager 4 million annual riders in a very limited area. My bus service of a town of 30k has comparable riderships and definitely did not cost 150 million bucks.

    Hey tdt. I lived in Orlando FL for awhile and I have to say, one of the defining characteristics of the city was its vegetation. For example, Spanish Moss is literally everywhere. So if you're looking for a way to distinguish Sunset City and take it to the next level, then I would suggest using primarily only native flora. It's a small change but I think it can have a big impact.
    Edit: Also, there's trees lining almost every major street, because it's hot as hell 24/7.

    South Florida has a commuter train system called the Tri-Rail. It opened in 1989 so it is not too far off timeline-wise. It runs from Downtown Miami all the way to West Palm Beach at the far north of the Miami urban area. I think a commuter train system could be a pretty cool transport connection between Sunset City, the future second city, and all of their suburbs.

    As someone living in Miami i have to say the metromover being useless is entirely dependant on what you need it for. It's actually very decent at navigating downtown, particularly if you take the metrorail to one of the major stations downtown and in Brickell they have easy connections inside the stations for metromover that allow you to get closert to where you're going without walking in the muggy and often rainy Miami weather. It is a fairly small service, with only 3 loops but it covers an adequately small area and it offers a frequent service for free. It may be low capacity but I've never found it to be overly crowded. The bigger problem with public transportation in Miami is that metrorail serves a very small fraction of the county and doest really go anywhere near the suburbs in west Miami that might actually get some use out of it to commute downtown. You would have to go out of your way to get to a metrorail station. Not to get into the whole dilemma surrounding urban and suburban sprawl and American development policies but in general the layout of the city makes it hard for public transportation to work effectively and buses are infrequent and subject to the same traffic that cars are. In general it's very hard to live here without owning a car, but metromover is not necessarily the root of the problem and it's one of the few public transportation projects here that works well for it's intended purpose.

    The Police Station, albeit being a small bulid, looks amazing! Also the monorail station fitting perfectly inside the building was really satisfying. Can't wait to see Sunset City grow and become more atmospheric with the 80s feeling.

    @JacobOhlssonBudinger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    for the metro mover I think you should change the service pattern slightly to make it more similar to what you'd see in Miami. The red service would stay the same, running found the inner portion of the loop while the blue service would run; from the other side of the river, around the outside of the loop, then back across the river, making a kind of lasso looking route.
    in the real system all routes do a full service round the loop. one just goes in a circle, and two do this lasso. you've actually already set up the junction to handle this so I'd just go for it.

    Really love how the city is coming together. I think the building you placed from Havana could be cool as a historic city hall, while the building with the monorail running through could be the new city/state/federal building in the city.

    A good way to get the most bang for your buck with the big buildings is checking to make sure they contain the right number of households. I've seen you do that before in Oceania. Anyway, I think a cool idea would be to build a more historical Spanish inspired build somewhere else on the map to represent St. Augustine.

    Actually you don't have to use dull colors for your monorail. I was living in Miami for college when the Miami Metrorail and Metromover opened and as I recall it the Metromover cars were white, blue and light green - almost a pea green, the C:S standard green for metro lines matches it perfectly.
    As for your metro/light rail you'll definitely need elevated metro lines as an underground metro irl would flood due to South Florida's famously porous limestone rock, and surface trolleys irl would have snarled the infamous traffic that was intolerable even the '80s still further.

    The way you built the monorail reminds me of the Chicago Loop. I'd love it if it were to function in a similar way in the future, with several tracks joining the central loop at various points and trains (or monorail trains in this case) "terminating" by going round the loop once.

    Those canals from Lake Okechobee(not 100% sure about spelling) are for agriculture. They are having a notable effect on the massive slow river/swamp that flows south into the Everglades and then eventually ocean. These canals combined with a few highways that cross the Everglades have disrupted the watershed and the effects of this are still being studied.
    It’s very likely the effects are negative as suburban sprawl and agriculture encroach further into the Everglades. Species like the Florida panther are endangered as their habitat shrinks. Also there are lots of invasive pythons that you can bring in for a bounty.
    Also Miami is considering building a (separate…) monorail to South beach. At least they’re trying :(

    VAL. does look good for a monorail in CS. Certainly better than the futuristic Disney-ish thing.
    For your lines: One line should depart from the antenna station, turning right onto the loop (that curve does look bad) and get back to the antenna station on the exterior track of the loop. The second line on the interior track of the loop should run just on the loop given your antenna junction configuration and that's it.

How do you decide on what to detail more and what to detail less? i'm guessing it's got something to do with eye catching places. But then again places imo only become eye catchers once they are detailed. So my question then would be how do you go about in spotting and creating potential eye catching places while plopping down etc.?

Basically a shortcut for boats to cross from the gulf of mexico to the atlantic without having to go all the way around the keys.
