  • Up next in my DIY kitchen renovation is my backsplash. In this project, I transformed the dated, off-white tiles in my backsplash to more modern, bright-white, subway-style tiles all without removing my existing tile and in just a few hours by using a product called Smart Tiles.

    We have used Smart Tiles in our motorhome kitchen and bathroom, in our house in the kitchen and in our park model in the kitchen and bathroom. It has been 3 years now and they still look as good as the day we put them up! LOVE them!!

    Thank you Ashley for your FYI. I didnt know there was such a thing until you showed it. Im over 60+ but when I was 20 years younger I scoured the hardware stores for DIYs. I did my back splash with wall paper tiles that were durable until now theyre still doing a great job. But I think you inspired me to makeover it with this application. I just need to find the right design for mine. And I will hire someone from start to finish just because I dont think I can have your great tenacity and patience anymore like I had when I was like a spring chicken.

    Idk why everyone is being so hateful. You didnt mention that you were being budget friendly && quite frankly doesnt really matter. What matters is that it gives it an instant updated look without all the extra reno trouble. I think it looks good. (No i wouldnt pay that price but it still looks good)

    I was hoping it would be cheaper than actual tile but I see this is for people who can’t tile and want to save on hiring someone to do it. Good job.

    For quite a bit less than 400$ I tiled my backsplash with Travertine tiles. I had to remove the old tiles but it wasn't that hard and I love the new look. I really don't like these fake tiles, but each to his own.

      No worries, my preference is for real tiles too, but saving myself the work of demo and re-installing new tiles was kind of nice as well for a short term fix

    Looks really great! I used these in my house I sold last year. My house was built in 1957 and had a formica backsplash but we ripped that out. What was behind that was fir plywood that was on like cement so I put my smart tiles right over that and it turned out so good. I spent a similar amount to what you spent and I do agree, for a diy it was not the easiest job...I also was OCD about it all lining up! But in the end I had a beautiful backsplash at a fraction of the cost in dollars (maybe not time!)

      @AshleysConsciousLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! Yeah I know it's not the same as fancy new tile but to skip demo and install and instead just put these up makes for a great short-term fix that can last as long as you want it to and totally change the look of the space!

It looks good for now and hopefully you can update/upgrade later but this is a good temp fix to ugly old tile just like the kind I have in my kitchen #bleh!

      While it is a rude comment, your "girl power" comment is sexist too. A vagina doesn't make you or anyone else better or more "powerful" at putting up a back splash. Support people because they are good people and do good things, not because they have a vagina or a penis.

    My tiles were the wrong color also. I watched several you tubers who painted theirs, so Ii tried it. I scrubbed them, then used XIM primer (water-based, though it is also available in an oil-based formula), then semi-gloss latex paint. I am very pleased with the result.

    You did a great job. Looks good. Im curious why you spent $8/sqft for fake tile when you could have purchased a really nice stone tile for the same amount? Was it because you cant lay tile yourself? Ive thought about the peel & stick tile but cant justify the price when I can buy higher quality for the same cost. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing. Your kitchen looks amazing!!! xoxo

      Just Me I do believe she mentioned it was because of feeling that she didn’t possess the skills to lay tile. Honestly though laying tile isn’t hard. I do not consider myself very skilled when it comes to home improvement but I have laid tile many times now and actually find it to be one of the easiest projects to do. I do think faux tile like this has it’s place though, in situations such as this one or in rental situations where renters can not make any permanent improvements.

      No offense taken, it's not for everyone. For me I just wanted something that would cover the tile and give it a modern update. Not exactly the best long-term solution but for now it's working and I hope to keep them up for several years (to off-set the cost). One year out and so far so good.

      I think you would go with real tiles soon. They are about the same price, the process is a little more involving but the result will be much better and they'll last for a long time. Also, there are good grouts and sealers these days and that will help with cleaning. Good hob for some plastic tiles though!

      Question: It sounded in your video as if you were given the stickers by the manufacturer in exchange for a review and video. If that is the case that you did not pay for them, would you have paid the $300+ that the product would have cost you to do your back splash? Did you find this product to be worth what it would cost?

      Please share with the class your contact for getting a kitchen backsplash demo and tile installation for under $400. Share their name, number, website... whatever you have. I'll wait.

      its called do it yourself guy lol. grab a hammer and a pry bar and get the backsplash off then buy your materials. its cheap. you could have a completely redone backsplash for probably 2-300 bucks.

    That's a bit expensive imo, you can buy the same 10"x10" peel n sticks on amazon, 10 for $34.99.

      There's probably a difference in the quality, not all peel n stick sheets are the same.

    I was considering getting these exact same tiles for a rental property just cause I thought it was easier to install than real tiles and cheaper, but after seeing the before and after I actually think the before looks better. The smart tiles just looks to shiny for my taste.

      @AshleysConsciousLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm glad you are thinking green so I have a question. When these tiles fail and you peel them off, they can't be recycled so they will have to go to the landfill. Plus it is an awful lot of money for plastic tiles when a real tile backsplash would cost just about the same amount of money. Any thoughts on my points?

    • @AshleysConsciousLife
      @AshleysConsciousLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You could argue that they aren't green because they have to go to the landfill, but if I had taken off my old tile that also would have gone to the landfill, so its kind of the same if you ask me. And as for the cost, I agree they are more expensive than traditional tile but I did not have to take off the old tile and install new tile (both skills I do not possess and would have hired someone to do). Now if you can do your own tile, that's a great savings and real tile would have been cheaper, but for me this is a great option.

    • @hotrodhog2170
      @hotrodhog2170 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your thoughts. I took my tile off and used about half of them to cover a couple of planters I made for my wife. I did go to a tile store and buy a couple of different colored tiles and broke them up a bit and mixed in with the ones I had, to change up the color pattern. So only half my tiles went to the landfill. Keep the vids coming.

    Ashley, Thank you for your instructional video. What I didn't see is what the finished project looks like on the edges. What does the "edge" look like--where the cabinets end? Is there a way to finish it off so the sides look "finished?" Thank you.
