    Dave this video is far from boring. In fact, in my opinion this is one of your best videos. I LOVE what you said about not having to be good at bushcraft, just enjoy it. That's just how I am with my woodcarving and woodworking, I may not be the best at it but nobody enjoys it more than I do. Thanks for taking us along on another adventure.

      Thanks Scott! Well people need to think a long the lines of have fun no matter what. I had a friend that his hobby was fishing tournaments. He got so into it, so competitive that it got to the point where he was stressed out so bad that he grew to hate fishing because he wasnt winning. I say do what you enjoy no matter how it turns out. Take care my friend!

    Couldn't agree more. Bushcraft should be joyful and full of good memories. I began my bushcraft / survival life at four years old with my grandfather who raised me. Great memories, good times and peace within.

    I for one appreciate your video's.
    There not pretentious, you not selling me anything, but above all you are honest in your presentation.
    The drought is affecting all of the East...this is a sign and a warning of what is happening...
    We that love the Wilderness, i.e. Bushcraft are stewards of our Wilderness.
    If anything we see the signs of the fragility of our Wilderness.
    Frankly we are loosing it, including our Wildlife...If we are not careful!!!
    I don't mean to be so down trodden in my conversation here.
    But thanks to folks like you, others we know and myself we have a duty and obligation to share what we know and preserve and protect our Wilderness so we may practice our Bushcraft in the perfect solitude of our Wilderness space.
    I look to your Video's and thank you for your work and joy!

    As we moved from Glamping to Bushcraft, my daughter and I have appreciated everything outdoor and nature far more. And, like you said, its more engaging, challenging and entertaining. Raising a girl, I felt the only way to get her to go outdoors to start was to Glamp, and she did. Now, she is older, and really enjoys working on crafting shelters, cooking apparatus, fires (when allowed) etc... In California, our drought is the worst in 1000 years. Real bad. No fires allowed anywhere within 100 miles where we live for the past 3 years. Keep up the great videos. You have inspired us to pushed the boundaries of creativity in the bush.

    PS I've been trying to hotrod an old Ford F1 pickup truck for the past 10 years but every time I think about going into the garage I end up going fishing instead. Never enough hours in a day to get stuff done.

    You are the real deal mister. I can see in this old vid that the drought really bummed you out. Shows you care for nature that surrounds you. Also shows the quality type person you are for caring about the animals and their habitat, and it also shows that you know how to keep things in perspective. I mean, enjoying nature, playing in nature, no rules, just try it, improve it, or not, doesn't matter. I don't listen to the self proclaimed so called survival experts, most of them are keyboard warrior hacks and wanna be's who never actually experienced a real survival situation to begin with and Its highly unlikely that any of us will ever experience a real life survival experience as well. Great Vid once again.

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Yes, I truly care for nature and the woods. Once they are all chopped down and paved over, We are screwed. I hear ya on the survival experts thing. Some of these folks have read books , watched TV then started TH-cam channels. Its so obvious to me its sickening. That why I try to avoid the words survival on here and stick to bushcraft and camping.

    Very cool video Dave! Another great thing about brown sugar is taht is way healthier than the processed white sugar. I hope the dryout ends soon and the water and fish will return again. Cheers, Marc

    • @JAB671
      @JAB671 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just FYI and not trying to be a 'know it all' but the stuff we buy as brown sugar is not the same as turbinado sugar (which is also brown.) Turbinado sugar is usually unprocessed while commercial brown sugar is usually processed. In fact, most commercial brown sugar is nothing more than processed white sugar with molasses (which is a by-product of producing processed sugar) added to it to give the distinctive flavor. The only reason I learned that is I used to work with a guy who was a vegan and he wouldn't eat white sugar because it is often processed with animal bone char and when I asked about brown sugar he told me the info I mentioned, above. I looked it up myself and found that he was right. It doesn't bother me and I still eat white (and brown) sugar although these days I mostly try to stick with Splenda.

    A beautiful video, David. You don't just tell the why, you show why and how much in that intro, walking through the dry creek. It's heartbreaking to watch the land you love drying out and hoping life will come back with enough rain. We got enough to fill the reservoirs here, and the last couple of weeks we've had enough to put about an inch of new green grass on the ground here. Fall and Winter are our natural green time here in California, and we're all thankful to see that new grass. I hope your drought passes soon and gently, with enough steady rain to give water without flooding. All the best to you, my friend!

    • @Reallybigmonkey1

      Thanks MacKenzie, I'm glad you liked it. Oh yes, its very very depressing to see my play ground all dried up and dead. Thats wild that Fall and Winter are your green times. • @jamesaritchie1

    Great video. Love your attitude. Out in the real woods, bushcraft, woodsmanship, should be about one person coming to the aid of another, not competing. I do think newcomers should either be good enough to stay safe, or wise enough to go out with someone who does know enough. That's coming to the aid of others, too, or so I believe. Go out with newcomers, and help show them how to stay safe. I hate to say it, but I didn't know the drought was still in full swing. And I have family and friends down there. I credit not knowing with it being election year. I'm usually a news junkie, but this year I've avoided news. I even stopped watching TV. I'll pray it ends soon. I love my coffee, and I often drink two or three pots per day, doctor's orders be hanged. I drank it black for forty-six years or so, and then, about four or five years ago, I discovered coconut creamer, and now that's the only way I drink it at home. I still drink it black at restaurants and in the woods, but only because I can't get my coconut creamer there. I was taught to let coffee perk for two minutes, and then to get it off the fire. Works well for me. Anyway, yes, bushcraft should be fun, not a competition. I don't think I am a bushjcrafter. I'm a woodsman, and I don't worry about the latest this or that, which knife I should or shouldn't use, which knot is best, etc. I grew up in the woods, and I just love being out there. If I'm not actively hunting, trapping, fishing, or doing anything else that makes me move around and be active, I love just sitting down under a tree, building a tiny fire, and relaxing. I can spends days, weeks, just sitting and thinking, drinking coffee, enjoying the sights and sounds of the woods, and I can sleep under a tree with the best of them. I know how to survive in the woods. I know how to live in the woods, and I have known since I was a kid, so I don't worry about every little thing this expert or that expert says. Most have never actually lived in the wild. And no one needs much of what is taught under the name of survival. Much of it is nonsense, anyway. Most people have enough skill and common sense to do an excellent job, with just a bit of aid from someone who knows what to do, and who doesn't keep telling them they have to have this, buy that, do the other. You don't need the latest knife, the latest backpack, the perfect tent, and you don't have to know how to tie every knot in existence. Knowledge helps, but actually surviving, and especially living, in the wild, is far more about attitude and common sense than about trying to do every little thing some expert says. I've met a lot of people who know several times as much about the wild as I do, but who could last two weeks in the wild, and could never live there fulltime. They've tried, but they think of it as an ordeal, and their own mind punishes them. They make it a battle, long for it to end, suffer when it doesn't, and you can't live long term in the wild that way. You have to accept it for what it is, and you have to enjoy it, or you won't last. This largely applies to short term survival, as well. For something like bugout, or surviving a bad situation that goes on for weeks, and most certainly for living there long-term, you can't be afraid, you can't destroy your body and mind by making it a battle, by hating it, by losing your mind wanting it to end. Anyway, great video. You always have something to say worth listening to, and you say it in a most enjoyable way. And, wow, I rambled even longer than usual. I'll shut up now.

    Love it! Thanks again David! Your videos always make my week! ..Like the hat, and the neck knife!! 😍
    Great new invention there! You really are a genius for this stuff.. It's wonderful! .. I think many of us love bushcraft for the same reasons, it's a chance to recharge and decompress from the pressures of daily life .. In my case, it's those things, and that I've always been a 'nature kid'.. I spent all my free time as a child outdoors, in the woods, at the farm, wherever! Despite life's hurdles and obligations, the woods is where I end up when I can escape 😁 no place like it! Parks are nice, but they're not wild.. ❤️
    ..We have had a horrible drought here too this year, last year was BAD, this year was even worse ☹️ I lost more than 1/2 my plants with the watering bans & NO rain in months.. Then ironically we got 4 inches of SNOW last night .. There's busted tree chunks all over, so many still had their leaves the snow cracked them.. So, I completely sympathize over the dryness and the effects on our favorite woodlands because of it.. There's been SO many creatures that have disappeared as the plants withered and the water holes dried up.. I hate to say it, but all we can hope for is record snowfall to refill the basins for spring.. Not that I'm looking forward to record snow either 🙄 LOL .. I hope you get a lot of rain! Before January!!
    .. I've had trouble with TH-cam's messaging (again!), so I sent a message as a response to a previous message to you, see if you can find it? 😁 lol
    Take care! Looking forward to the next ones! 💕

      Always great to hear that Ruth and I'm happy you liked it. Good way you have of describing Bushcraft. In a way, when we played in the woods as kids it was a form of pre Bushcraft. Thats so bad you was in a drought too, amazing the snow came! That wont be much of a hope here. We very rarely get snow here. Usually just a dusting. PM me when you can. Hey Dave been watching your videos for some time now, and I like how you always bring enthusiasm and light heartedness to your delivery. I don't get out as much as I should but just watching your channel makes me feel i'm there with you. I think this Global warming cycle we are in has a lot to do with many of the unusual weather patterns we are experiencing, especially when it comes home to you noticing things , such as the lack of wildlife that used to be present all the time such as snakes and frogs, and if your having problems finding water what about the birds, deer and all other larger animals that live in the woods. isn't that the reason we go out there to see and be part of nature to experience the wild and become at one with it. Any how like your stuff keep it going always like what you do thank you.

      @Reallybigmonkey1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sitting at my Place in South Central MO... There's a Forcast of Snow on the way and it's 35, snow melt ground is soupy to walk on, and the tiny birds are crackling the leaves, looking for the Handfuls of corn I cast out yesterday. Feels like Home. I'm not a city dweller. I got along okay in the city, but even in Fargo ND, it is only Quiet in the Blizzard. I can sculpt anywhere... Hi David, I live in Texas and we have bad droughts all the time, and don't worry the fish, frog, turtles, etc. always come back. We've gone almost a year without rain, but as soon as rain comes you hear the frogs singing all over the place. I don't know how they do it, but they always survive. Also, bit of trivia, there was a bad drought that hit almost the whole South in 1862. I don't know about Georgia, but I know from reading about the Civil War that the drought was bad in Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. Love your videos, you're the best friend I've never met.

    I'm so glad y'all finally got some rain. I spent a week with friends near Ellijay doing some primitive camping and my friend from Rome would take us out to some spots and you could just see the look in his eyes when we were to come up on a creek and it had long been dried up. It was ruff spending that week without having a campfire but it was the responsible thing to do.
