I am a big fan of fuel and carburetor cleaner additive. At Walmart it is about $2. I add it about every 3 tanks. To me, it seems to work after several years of use. Just a suggestion.
Hi Scott, I enjoy watching your videos,I'm in the Seattle area, still working for another 4 years, but I'm a full timer van life.I have a 2000 Toyota Seinna XLT.After owning for a couple years,I have found it runs better on Chevron gas,a little more expensive, but it has techron in it,which is an engine cleaner.Since using this gas,I no longer have the symptoms you were describing.Safe travels!
I am watching your video tonight, for the first time after driving from Grants Pass, I live in GP and worked at the Fred Meyer you stopped at, to Eugene today. I stopped at Natural Grocers, purchased Vita Farm eggs, Mary’s Chicken and Vitamin K-2. this is trippy!
Have ever refilled the radiator at some point because overheating can also occur if u get an air bubble in the cooling system which will require you bleeding that air out, also when was last time u changed the air filter ? Worth a look. Using the correct oil viscosity is important for an aging engine. U have done the plugs, what about your leads ? If they are old u could lose power under heavy work load. I could go on but I’m sure ur friend has mentioned all these anyway. Good luck
Just s thought on winter vs. summer gas. The change takes place in early June to less volatile fuel because of evaporation in summer. So no telling you may have put in summer gas which your motor may prefer. Something to research? Safe travels Scott.
I used to ride motorcycle and it really showed the difference between different gas. I always choose 76 (preferably) second choice, Chevron. I steer clear of shell or anything less. Lots of gasoline stations thin out the gas for larger profit , unfortunately this leads to engine performance.
Usually a compression test for the engine is not too hard to do and provides a good insight to the engine condish. Yes to the fuel filter swap out too. Plus the air filter sunlight/mileage check.
It happens in older vehicles when you change altitude, just clean all your fuel lines and replace your fuel filters. You should see a dramatic difference. It happened to me back in 1988 when I drove my Toyota 4x4 from Florida to Colorado, The fuel filters clogged when I got just outside of Tennessee. Luckily I found a mechanic to help in the middle of nowhere.

Hi Scott, waking up to another great video, watching it with a coffee thank you. When I’ve previously had issues similar to your van, first thing I’ve done is just change the fuel filter. This often gets overlooked, but does cause issues if not changed regularly. Just a thought, hope it’s helpful 😊
Hey Scott, when you pass through Newport maybe give it another try. I’m spending my 3rd summer here. While the city has made a lot of changes, it’s still very receptive to nomads. Street parking overnight is prevalent and state parks and coastlines for days. I stay here because of the grocery stores, the ocean and river views, abundance of parking. What isn’t allowed anymore is abuse. Staying in one place for weeks, leaving trash, that sort of thing. Thanks for another interesting vid!!
Maybe at some point give the van a good service. Change all filters. Maybe even the coolant. The van probably needs a good run from time to time. Just seen your other video about the engineering problems with the engine.
Tasty brunch sandwich, you got some great quick fix setups dude. Today I saw what looked like an identical white 2016 ram promaster at an intersection, coming back from the doctor in Michigan, but pretty sure it wasn't you. Roll on.

Oh, you were in my town (Eugene)! That Natural Grocers is right up the street from where I used to live :) We have lots of local natural foods stores as well if you ever find yourself back here--we're a buncha hippies around here.
Dehydration can be caused from a lack of nutients and/or vitamins. Potatoes, beans rice and leafy greens will help. Bananas also. The more we dont eat, the less we want to eat. We must nurture our relationship with food. Just passing on what ive learned.

As you know, in Oregon, you may not fill your own tank and when they fill it they usually top it off, which is not good for your car. You can ask them not to top it off, or better still, ask for a specific amount to avoid the problem altogether. I never like to see gas pouring onto the highway after a fill-up. I am not a mechanic, but this advice was given to me by a mechanic when I was driving in Oregon.
You're blessed to have the option of so much space in the U.S. Living in Ireland - options are somewhat limited. There is a ship passage to spain but everyone owns something in europe. It is my dream to move to the U.S and have that sense of freedom. That one can go somewhere so remote - no one can find you.
The Lucas will cause the engine to clean stuff out and with your low miles daily and then going high speeds for long periods of time will get the gunk out too. Just gotta be patient with your van. Plus the mountains there are rough. I’ve been through there a lot growing up
I'm familiar with that stretch of I-5, it IS noisy! Once we made it to that area and pulled into Indian Mary campground (county) and they happened to have a couple of spots available. I think it was about $20 but well worth it to us, very quiet, beautiful and nice people as camp hosts. Bonus: showers. I'm with you, Scott ... if I can get 8-10 hours of sleep I'm happy.

It’s been shown that using a heavier weight of oil exacerbates the variable valve timing issue. There are some great engine rebuild companies that have shared information on the subject. Seems these engines can last a long time if the oil is kept fresh
If you ever drive your vehicle with the fuel level under a 1/4 of a tank, it could be fuel filter. My engine started acting up, i needed a filter. The mechanic said that driving on low fuel causes trash in the gas or tank to become more concentrated and clog gas filter.
I have an older car, it runs much better especially uphill when I have a mostly full tank of gas, I never let it get below half full because car runs very badly if do, older car gunk builds up in the bottom of the tank, when car is on an angle that Gunk blocks the the fuel intake. The bad gas (not human gas lol) happened to me a few years back and my car ran really weird for a few days. Kinda shaky with lots of throttle so there may be something to what your friend said. Anywho, glad things seem a bit better! ☺
Toddler …you had me laughing out loud. When I had my 1984 Volvo during the 90’s, I never ever put cheap gas, oil or anything because it was a very old car. Only one time I put in regular gasoline and my car was sluggish and I knew I had to use really good gas to keep it going. Sometimes, you have to ‘baby’ it a little. Miss my car.🚗
Im sure youve already thought of the fuel filter but your van seems to have some of the classic symptoms. Anyway you have a good vlog and travel one of my favorite areas...and a big plus is you love coffee. Hope both you and your van get to feeling better.

A quick and cheap maintenance tip. Change your air filter. It takes about 5 minutes to change out. Probably cost less than $20 bucks to buy a new one.
Absolutely, was just about to suggest this. A potential cheap and easy fix.
Yes, I’ve already replaced it. I did check it though and still looks new with a few hundred miles on it
