Join members of the Merriam Pianos team-Stu, Annie, and Alan-as we take you on an exclusive journey through Bechstein's Factory. Invited by C. Bechstein for a factory tour and a grand 170th-anniversary gala in Germany in early September 2023, our team got to take a first-hand look at the cutting-edge developments shaping the future of this prestige piano maker.
C. Bechstein is standing on the brink of an exciting evolution, expanding its manufacturing, retail, and marketing reach-a strategic move that's preparing it for a full revival of its golden era glory. But, this isn't a mere throwback; Bechstein seamlessly integrates advanced piano-making techniques with robust financial strategies to secure its place in the competitive global market. It's already closely competing with Steinway for the top spot in flagship acoustic piano sales, and the vibrancy and drive within the company were palpable from the moment we disembarked the bus in Dresden.
In this video, we offer viewers a compelling short summary of our time at the Bechstein factory. You'll get to see a showcase of newly finished instruments and recently launched models, take a sneak peek at the main features of their manufacturing process, and meet the dedicated research and development team that's shaping the future of Bechstein's pianos.
Moreover, we also reflect on our general takeaways from the trip and the start-to-finish precision of Bechstein's craftsmanship, highlighting their commitment to the culture and stature of piano-making. We hope this video engages and educates you, providing an exciting look at the future of the music industry as captured through the lens of Bechstein's unmatched legacy and ambitious vision. - เพลง
I am the proud owner of one of the academy series grands. And for me bechstein is the absolute best for in house pianos on a proffesional level
They are wonderful pianos with immense musicality and expression! Congrats on your Bechstein Academy grand! :)
Something that is perceived by hearing and looking at their product is that they are passionate about their craft.
And just by the size of the offering, too.
100%! The care, precision, and craftsmanship is evident in every element of one of their instruments.
Yes! No need for constant rehashing of a mythos from the bygone past century that is seen on this side of the Atlantic; they show “care” and honesty about man-hours in optimizing the instruments, and have what appears to be a quality, ample market offering. And they sound so. Although I would like them to progress on some of the materials used, as some “over here” do. And would wish Bechstein made the no-longer made, to-me-known-at-least, German upright actions that permitted the dampers to be independent from the mallets for regulation. Or are theirs so?
At least, from the branding aspect of things, Bechstein sounds more open, democratic, and fertile than elitist.
Not that I can see. They seem to have redesigned their long acclaimed Concert 8 upright for easier and faster production and now call it the model C-8. 🙄 They outsource so many of the components even in their top concert instruments as to not quality for the BVK officially “made in Germany” seal. I don’t own Merriam music but if I did, I’d probably drop the line and carry Fazioli or Steingraeber or Bösendorfer.
It's great that you were able to go to the celebration. It must have been wonderful. I had the privilege of going to the C. Bechstein factory at the end of August to choose my new Residence 6. They had prepared 3 pianos and I was able to play as much as I wanted over two sessions. And one of the apprentices gave me a tour of the factory. I'll never forget that day. Now, my new R6 is sitting in my living room. It's absolutely wonderful to have such a piano. I'd even go so far as to say it has changed my life, it's such a pleasure to play that I'm practicing way more than ever and loving every second of it. A real joy!
That is fantastic news! It is very exciting that you had the opportunity to personally select your R6 from the factory. Bechstein is unquestionably a company that is not only committed to perfection, but also their customers. Congrats on your R6! That is great to hear that it is inspiring more playing and practicing! :)
What an amazing thing to do! Was there an appreciable difference between the 3? What made you pick the one you did?
@@vickigreene4288 Yes, thanks! Yes, there was a difference. The master tuner said he'd prepared each piano slightly differently. I chose the one whose touch mostly resembled a grand piano. This is very subjective, but that piano felt like it had a great amount of confidence. It was powerful. It also seemed like the piano that would challenge me, make me a better pianist.
What a beautiful locale! It must be an inspiration for artists, musicians and such.
Absolutely! It is quite a beautiful place. :)
Yeah although it's a bit of a contentious area in Germany. We moved to Berlin to Austin TX in 2018 (for work reasons) and have been through Dresden lots of times on our way to Prague but never really stopped. I didn't know Bechstein was there. Had I known I would have made the effort to visit. We did however visit what they call "Swiss Saxony" which is a range of mountains just after Dresden. That was great. Basically a mountain range that makes for a great day long hike. We stayed a couple of nights in Bad Schandau as you can get to the mountains on foot from there. Loved that. Now that I know about Bechstein though I might make the effort to finally go to Dresden.
Superb! 🙌🙌❤️ Such a wonderful factory tour. It’s joyful video you have made. It shows they have passion for piano building and it’s not only business. I love whole Bechstien range. Zimmerman and Hoffmann pianos are also amazing. Thank you Mr. Stu too making such a beautiful video. ❤
Hi there! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thank you for taking the time to tune in! I certainly agree with you regarding Bechstein's passion for piano building. I would even go a step further by saying that it is an obsession. It is beyond impressive how dedicated Bechstein is to the craft of designing/building some of the world's finest pianos. :)
@@MerriamPianos Yes totally agree. I never get opportunity to play any Bechstien range but I have played Yamaha/Kawai/Steinway and Furich pianos. I am using a Yamaha YUS5 but I love the sound of Hoffmann T128 and P126 they are really very rich sounding pianos pianos. I love to see comparison of pianos and I never show any comparison Hoffmann vs Boston and Essex vs Zimmerman or Zimmerman vs Kawai and Yamaha Japanese models. In How do you compare Boston with Hoffmann and Zimmerman with Essex in terms of quality and performance? After watching so many videos on TH-cam, Specially Mr. Stus piano reviews. I personally feel Zimmerman is ahed then a Essex and Some of Hoffmann pianos are better than a Boston pianos. Kawai and Yamahas’s Japanese pianos are much cheaper in my country but Boston is super expensive. In future I wish to buy a Hoffmann T128 or May be P126. Thank you so much for responding on my comment. I believe Mr. Stu is No1 piano reviewer in world as a piano specialist I always love to watch his videos. He is my guru! ❤️❤️❤️
I wish I was beyond a beginner level pianist so I could experience performing at such gorgeous pianos such as these.
Thank you for this beautiful video! (Back to practice I go! 🎹😃)
You're very welcome! Thank you so much for taking the time to check out the video! :)
Wow, thanks for sharing those awesome moments!
Thank you for tuning in! :)
Well done! Fantastic video Stu!
Thanks so much for tuning in! We appreciate it! :)
❤C.BECHSTEIN is my alltime Favourite Manufacturer of Uprights and Grand Pianos 🎹🎼🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶❤️❣️💙🇩🇪
You are certainly not the only one with that sentiment! The power and expressivity of C. Bechstein pianos are immense! :)
Very nice video. I was impressed by the fact that their piano technicians are required to take piano lessons and are provided with pianos in their aparrtments. Do any other manufacturers do this?
Hi! Brent here! It is a very interesting and exciting initiative and speaks to Bechstein's commitment to quality and passion! I have not personally heard of other manufacturers doing this, but it is possible that others are implementing similar initiatives.
Absolutely beautiful pianos. They look as good as they sound.
I completely agree with that sentiment! They are incredible instruments! :)
Wow. Amazing! ❤
Thanks so much! :)
Nicely done.
Thanks so much! :)
Fantastic tour ! Thank you for sharing .. I am well familiar with Saxony as it is rooted in tradition. That is also the home of one of my favourite watch manufacturers- A. Lange und Sohne . Enjoyed this video tremendously. I aspire to own one of these pianos in my future
Thank you so much for the kind words and for tuning in! We sincerely appreciate it. My fingers are crossed that you will be able to own one of these stunning C. Bechstein pianos in the near future. :)
Nice video, great to see you are getting around! If you happen to visit Schimmel and/or Grotrian-Steinweg one day and you schedule allows, I'd treat you for a refreshment of your choice!
Thanks so much for tuning in! I will be sure to pass on the invite to Stu in case he is ever heading out that way for another factory tour! :)
Very cool! Could easily have been a two hour video 🙂But I know you do have many faq. videos on your channel though :)
For sure! There is so much exciting info to talk about when it comes to this legendary piano manufacturer! :)
Sweet 😃
Thanks so much! :)
I had just finished watching the C. Bechstein documentary “The soul of sound - A film on C. Bechstein” when I received the notification about a new video from Merriam Music, “C. Bechstein Factory Tour”. An interesting coincidence; perhaps???
Haha either coincidence or a very intelligent algorithm that understands exactly what to entice you into clicking on another video! ;)
We're glad we could supply you with more Bechstein content though!
Enjoy the visit Stu
Bechstein if your reading this ; give Stu one of your top line Bechstein pianos, he will give it a loving home for a very long time
I will be sure to pass on the kind words to Stu and try to give Bechstein the nudge for your request! ;)
At 1:24: A C. Bechstein Concert 8 upright with a pressure bar instead of individual agraffes?
I'm not entirely sure to be honest, but it does appear to be the case!
Is there a Bechstein digital?
Bechstein makes silent/digital systems for their pianos called the Vario system. :)
In spite of many famous piano's brands we have, it is visibly only one - Steinway & Sons - in all concert halls....Why?
While there are certainly a lot of concert halls that rely on Steinway pianos, Shigeru Kawai, Bechstein, Yamaha, Schimmel, and a vast array of other brands' pianos can be found in concert halls across the world. In some cases, certain manufacturers are more aggressive or invested than others in terms of endorsement and sponsorship arrangements in which free instruments are offered to venues and artists. However, there are a number of factors as to why concert halls choose different instruments.
What's the name of the song in the beginning.
I'm not sure to be honest! I'd have to check in with our production team, but it is a very beautiful piece. :)
Forgot to ask one thing did they have Zimmerman & Hoffmann pianos on display in factory?
I'd have to check with Stu about that. I have not yet had the opportunity to visit the Bechstein factory.
Yamaha p255 review coming?
We have a few more videos in the queue to tackle first, but we will do our best to cover the P255. :)
Too short 🙂
Perhaps, a follow-up video will be in order. ;)
Nice video, but this seems sponsored..
Thanks! We're glad you enjoyed the video. Our videos are not sponsored. With that said, we are transparent about being C. Bechstein dealers. As one of Canada's largest piano dealers, we are very fortunate to be able to pick and choose the lines we represent and carry. We are beyond thrilled to be able to represent such incredibly musical and well-made instruments. We also carry a number of other German and European made piano lines as well. Our philosophy is that we want to have as complete of a selection as possible for piano shoppers as everyone's ears and musical preferences are different. :)
