Vent-Enter-Search • Single Story, Flat Top With Heavy Fire • Douglas Road, Stockton, CA

  • On March 27th, 2020, Stockton Firefighters responded to a structure fire in the 2400 block of Douglas Road. Engine 7 arrived on scene reporting heavy fire from a single story, flat top with exposures threatened on the B and D sides. The four Engines on the first alarm were able to deploy an 1 3/4 attack line, two exposure lines, and a 2 1/2 attack line in a matter of minutes and knock down the blaze. Crews were able to protect the two exposures and save of much of the structure as possible.
    Truck 4 arrived and committed to a Vent-Enter-Search operation to the rear two bedroom windows. This operation requires entering the structure without the protection of a hose line. A VES is implemented to provide search and rescue for any citizens that may be trapped by fire in the structure. In a 'Risk vs Gain' analysis, the opportunity to save life outweighs the danger of firefighters entering the structure.
    We thank you for your views, support, feedback, and comments. Comments that contain profanity, incite controversy, or are intended to 'troll' will be deleted. We can not express enough that this video is intended to educate the public on what Stockton Firefighters must encounter- not host a platform for people to argue about personal issues or the fire service. We reserve the right to delete comments as we see fit.
    The fire was extinguished extremely quickly without issue or injury. Firefighters remained on scene for more than another hour to overhaul and conduct an investigation. We are proud to serve the citizens of Stockton, California.

    A little trick I figured out years back concerning garage doors. This works as long as there is no garage door opener hooked up. If you kick the lowest panel at the sides closest to the rails, the rollers fall off relatively easily and the door will essentially fold down onto its self.
    Much easier than beating the panel with a tool.

      Sledge to the upper corners does a pretty good job as well, even with an opener. Gets it off the rail and creates a decent enough opening.

    These guys showed exactly why they are true heroes in every sense of the word..... they essentially had about 4 inches of solid, sturdy structure to walk around on that roof, while breaking through it and cutting through it to open the hot spots and vent the roof. 4 inches. And they do this every day.

    Its really interesting to see how you guys have an other way of do your work than back here in germany. It was really wiered the first time as i saw how you do steps different than here and at first i didnt knew why you dou vertical ventilation. but as time and Videos go by i understand now why you do some steps different then us und why you do like stuff that we dont do like vertikal ventilation. By comparison there are some methodes that make more sense end some less. You do a very niche job but like differentley than back here in Germany. 3:00 That always impresses me in these SFD videos - 10 minute timer and the bulk of the fire's knocked down with multiple engine companies flowing water. Around here (also suburban CA, no less), they'd just be masking up and tripping over the uncharged pile of spaghetti in the yard.

    Legit question; I'm in the construction industry, and have been told extinguishing a burning gas rupture is wrong. It is my understanding that, as necessary, it may be required to provide a water curtain to protect exposures, but burning gas is gas that can't build up; i.e. you know where it's at and then it's gone. Extinguishing the fire does exactly what is described at 4:35; now you've got a bomb instead of a torch. Why not just protect the exposure and kill the fuel instead of the fire?

    • @williemartin9872
      @williemartin9872 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So, we don’t want to extinguish a ruptured gas line fire until we are ready to enter the area to plug it or cap it. Obviously there are times when that’s not possible like in this situation. The reason is as long as the fire is burning the gas it reduces the amount that builds up that otherwise would cause an explosion as you discussed having a “bomb instead of a torch.” You are correct they would want to protect the exposures with water curtains. However, it sounded like they were worried that there could be gas buildup in the exposure. I’m unsure if the gas leak was interior of the initial house or if it was exterior. If it was interior I imagine extinguishment was a result of steam conversion which would choke as would controlling the meter. If the gas fire was exterior they would have to determine if the line is connected to a meter they could control or have the utility company respond to kill the supply from the underground shutoff. After watching the video again, I kinda wonder if a ruptured gas line was the cause of this of this fire. They said the West exposure had the windows broke out which could suggest an initial explosion. There is a lot that we didn’t get to see that would answer your question, however, one thing is fore sure and that is they did a great job on their attack. They are appropriately aggressive and have good tactics. I’m am not with their department but I am a 12th year firefighter in Colorado.

    • @gusbailey68
      @gusbailey68 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@williemartin9872 While the gas buildup in the structure is not intuitive; I see your point. That devolves to an "on the ground" analysis, which YT does not facilitate.

    Another great video by Stockton Fire.
    A couple of questions / comments
    A. I did not know a first in Engine Company can ring down a second alarm. I was under the impression only BC’s were allowed to do so.
    B. This is a VERY abbreviated version of a fully involved flat top with exposures. The Typed in narrative is very informative and I truly appreciate it. Having said that , I had to stop the video four times and re wind multiple times to read the narrative. I don’t know what the solution is ....perhaps pausing the video yourselves when adding the narrative perhaps.
    C. I know for a fact that this department is extremely aggressive and FAST , but this video was very hard for me to follow as compared to your other videos

      Mike Paz Historically captains here can call for a 2nd alarm and recommend a third. Because of the amount of greater alarms we get, lack of staffing our BCs wouldn’t bat an eye at a Captain calling for a 3rd. We don’t get a a third truck until we struck a 3rd now and that has proven critical on a lot of greater alarm fires

      Any first arriving engine or truck will assume IC until a BC arrives. They can request any additional resources they think are needed. If the BC arrives and thinks those resources aren't needed he will just cancel them.

    We never extinguish a gas line fire - and let "explosive" gasses accumulate - unless making a bomb right next to our guys is less threatening than whatever damage the burning gas line might cause, and unless we have a fog nozzle right next to the gas line to entrain a lot of air and mix the gas down to weaker concentrations that can't ignite. What was the reason for putting out this gas line?

    I think this department does a great job oh, but I have one question of larger departments why do the engineers feel they don't need to have turnout gear on. There right there in The Hot Zone and many things could go wrong where that added protection would be a good idea. And my department everyone in The Hot Zone needs to have protective equipment on and that does include the engineer.

      Every department has a different SOP- We ALL have to wear our turnouts- on structure fires as well as vehicle accidents- including OSHA Safety vests OVER our turnout coats on vehicle accidents... LA City and County can wear bush jackets instead of turnout coats on vehicle accidents...

    • @jaymesc.moreland9265
      @jaymesc.moreland9265 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It comes down to that Depts SOPs but the reasoning is that full bunker gear on an Engineer can be more of a liability than an asset. Full Bunker gear mitigates the heat of the fire but increases the heat stress and fatigue on the engineer, particularly hotter climates. Also, It lowers the dexterity of the wearer and makes him more prone to accidents. One slip and he could easily fall off the side of the apparatus. Why place your Engineer under heat stress when it isn't immediately necessary and expose him to a potential accident by having his movement impaired. The point is wear the proper PPE for the situation, and task at hand.

  • @watchthe1369
    @watchthe1369 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nobody does it like you guys. I see twice the number of NYFD showing up at alarms thaking twice the time to get a knockdown, and frequently being on the call all night. You are in and out in 4 hours or less if I am seeing the typical patterns. Everyone takes 10 minutes to get set up while the attack line suppresses, your second and maybe even third line are going in in 5 minutes and younever have water issues. Everyone knows their job and executes it with practiced effort. I see people walking with a will, working with their hands quickly, and generally acting like they are here to KILL the fire. I see a lot of other departments waiting to actually be ordered for a task. It is a qualitative difference when a firefighter sees and exposure flaring up and calls it and grabs a hose to handle it.
    I do not know what you guys are doing in your training/ day to day stuff that makes the difference, but it sure shows.
