I, too, had the ignition play up on me, and while I was interstate. I don't believe that it is the barrel itself, but rather, the ignition switch housing on the other side of the steering column the wiring harness just literally falls out of the housing because it's only held on by some really flimsy folded tabs that bend out over time from use, so you need to reassemble it and probably replace the ignition switch fuse in the engine bay 20amp from memory hopefully it helps.
@lockstompandsteer Yeah well luckily it's quite a simple fix. However, it can just happen literally without any warning and render the car completely inoperable when it does let go.

I would love to have such a nice Aussie Ford or Holden in UK. Unfortunately those are rarer than JDM imports due to emissions

Yeah just bought the tool to fix it, I also had a BA xr6 a couple years ago and it did the same thing
