      And the great And arguably rare opportunities she has to learn from the unique knowledgeable people Kenan knows.
      Like it's funny if you ever listen to Brian Barczyk, he talks a lot about the reptile OG's of the past. But I think it's safe to say that there are several people that either have risen or are rising up to become future reptile OG's.
      And while he might not admit it, Kenan is one of those people and is at the heart with all the other folks making big impacts.

      She is lucky to be living the life I only dreamed of at her age. Early impressions stay with a person for life. As a kid most of my same-age, female cousins showed less than the least-bit interest in herps (at best) and occasionally displayed abject horror. Always amazed me how a tiny hatchling turtle could invoke such fear in someone! It’s usually (not always) boys who are into collecting “critters” though early conditioning plays a huge role.

    As a fish keeper myself I know Those neons are gana be a nice snack for those Oscar’s 😂 and those convicts are one of the most prolific breading fish so that pond will be full of them in no time

    • @wendyhood1006
      @wendyhood1006 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I would of left the Oscar’s out 🤐

    • @Sarragota
      @Sarragota 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was thinking the exact same. The lady at the store looks like a nice person but her expertise seems to lay in a different part of fish keeping. Very poor choice of fish, as you mentioned the neons will become an expensive snack in no time, the convicts will overtake in less than 2 years, he will start using them as feeder instead of tilapia. Even if the neons wouldn't be eaten I doubt that they will survive the winter, I know the ponds are heated but neons are highly tropical (Oscars probably won't survive many winters either) . Should've gone with subtropical tetras like Buenos Aires Tetra (Hyphessobrycon anisitsi) or Blood Fin Tetra (Aphyocharax anisitsi) and for cichlids some Gymnogeophagus species....

    Kenan is an awesome dad! I had to learn all about animals on my own, would’ve loved to have a mentor like that growing up

    • @davidvento5481
      @davidvento5481 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s great that Kenan’s dad introduced him to what has become both his passion & livelihood in life. Luckily I had an older brother who sparked my interest in virtually every aspect of nature starting with herps. Over the years & through experience one can amass a huge body of knowledge. Kenan’s channel is unique in that he enjoys sharing & educating viewers with virtually no ego, theatrics or drama apparent on certain other YT channels. Members of my dad’s family (aunts & uncles) lived not far from his on Eastern Long Island. I spent many childhood summers in Suffolk Co., therefore I feel a certain kinship exists. At an early age I was also tramping through the woods, ponds, swamps, estuaries, shoreline, etc. bringing home every manner of reptile/amphibian/insect/crustacean (aka; “creature”) often covered in mud/burrs and occasionally to the dismay of other family members. Ah, childhood memories; nothing quite like “surprising” female cousins with a Hognose Snake at a family BBQ! lol. I never understood why they weren’t completely fascinated by the reptile’s defenses; it’s musking, cobra-like hooding/hissing and finally it’s “playing dead.” Even a tiny toadlet would send them running away in abject terror, often screaming hysterically. Meh, “girley-girls”... go figure.
      Congratulations to Kenan on living his dream and his willingness to share it freely with others. Keep up the good work!

Your videos are what the reptile community needs, to show the rest of the world what good, responsible, careful and safe care of animals is all about. No showboating, no “look how dangerous” I can make things. No clickbait. We need this now, more than ever, here in south Florida. Unfortunately the cardinals are difficult to breed in captivity, and if they end up in the same pool as the oscars they will eat them all.

    • @broman6662
      @broman6662 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cardinals are extremely difficult to breed yes. But this was neon tetras.
      Cardinals are always more expensive because they are hard to breed an are almost always wild caught.
      Neons are cheaper because they are bred in captivity.
      But you are right about that they will be eaten, by both the oscars and the convicts

    • @celticbarry9877
      @celticbarry9877 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They will have a better chance of breeding since they will be living more naturally outside. Things that trigger fish to breed are usually certain weather conditions or available food, times of the year and all that. Being outside they will get natural light and dark, hot and cold, bugs and wildlife to eat, they will see predators also the caimen, oscars, birds.
      All that kind of stuff will probably trigger more natural behavior. A lot of south american fish also, particularly tetras and small fish usually breed when they are trapped in small pools in the dry season when it's hotter, they are "trapped" into a smaller area and can't get back out into main river/streams with flow and steady temperatures and they may be caught in those small ponds with predators so they start to breed and the tiny babies manage to survive until the wet season where they are opened back up to other water sources, in Kenans ponds they will be in it will actually be similar to that where its small enough for the sun to heat it and cool it every day which to them may feel like the conditions that trigger them to breed.

    Interesting advice from someone who worked there for 16 years. Hopefully those tetras can hide well from the Oscars. Hopefully those Oscars can hide well from the caiman. BTW. Beginner fish keepers know that convicts lay eggs. They are very easy to breed, she should know that.

    My first day of work experience at a poorly run wildlife park 15yo me was in the approx 5×8m enclosure with a full grown male saltwater crocodile. There was a mistake by the builders and they put the pump and temperature controls 180° off of the plan- which put them against the fence on the inside rather than against the fence on the outside.
    This tale may may not sway Kate about allowing Sophia in with the Cayman once a teen...
    Just remember Sophia you dont have to outrun the crocodilians- as long as you outrun Kennan!

    Those are some big-a Neons! I thought they were actually Cardinal Tetras at first. You might want to catch a Pleco/armored catfish or 2 locally to control the algae situation. As I’m sure you’re aware they’ve become one of the most invasive species in Florida. My bro also uses Water Hyacinth & Water Lettuce to control algae blooms, both can be collected locally. They also have some amazing day & night blooming S. American Waterlilies but the turtles might do what they did in the rec pond depending on their particular diet. Victoria waterlilies have protective spines on all parts of the plant and they may have developed a dwarf species. Also, Lotus (and dwarf Lotus) are marginal like the plants you already have. However in addition to providing lots of shade they also produce spectacular, large blooms (a huge fan of aquatic botanicals here!)
