I was just in south Florida at my husband's family home and wanted to go see Sam. His place is amazing. I really want to start caring for tortoises. After 2 years, and watching people like you, Kenan and Sam have taught me so much. I'd love some Salcatas, red foots, cherry heads, and my dream would be aldabras or a gallop or 2. Then other animals I love are Rhino iguanas and Radiated Tortoises. Those are certainly bucket list for me and my husband.

I really enjoyed the conversation about the educational aspects of what you guys do. Education begins with curiosity. And that curiosity begins with exposure. Anyone I talk to who is obsessed with reptiles (like myself) always has a memory of a childhood experience. I was five years old when I was exposed to my first reptile. I saw an alligator lizard run by me in the backyard. I had no idea what it was, so my dad caught it to show me. That opened up a world of curiosity that never stopped, even 30 years later!

Fun fact: The Komodo Dragon actually isn’t considered an island giant anymore. Fossils have been found in Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea that are attributed to the Komodo. They are pretty sure all those places were connected during the last ice age due to lower sea levels, and that the Komodo just went extinct everywhere else except for the couple of islands it lives on today. It’s believed it evolved in Australia alongside the Megalania.

Always a good time when you are at Sams place! Sad to see so many empty cages from him having to get rid of so many of his animals due to the new regs in Florida. I know i wouldnt be alone with wanting a longer episode of just you and Sam talking about his animals and his goals. Almost like a podcast because he has so much info to give out and it would be recorded on YT for years to come.

I just wanna say, Kenan, that I started watching your channel because I thought it would one day make good reference if I needed to ever draw/paint reptiles, but I stayed for the educational value. I'm a comic artist by trade and tho I know I'd never want to own a reptile, it's very fun to learn about them and see the animals in your care and those in the care of your friends :) It's a dearly held belief of mine that no matter what we do for a living or in our hobbies, no education or learning is wasted and it all feeds into each other and makes our lives richer. Thank you for everything you do!

Island dwarfism and gigantism is fascinating, but it’s based more on size than mammal/reptile
Small animals often get large in the absence of predators and large animals often get smaller due to limited resources
There’s a few examples of small mammals growing larger on islands

The well-known giant island reptiles aren’t considered island giants now.
The Komodo dragon and the large tortoises already reached the islands in their current size. In the past many giant tortoise occurred on the mainland, but they got extinct by humans.
Some smaller reptiles like lizards became island giants though. Small mammals like rodents and rabbits have grown on islands too.

Just wanna add into the little paleontology discussion at the start of the video. The three lineages Sam was discussing are Anapsids which have no openings in their skulls, Synapsids which have 1 opening called temporal fenestra, and Diapsids which have 2 openings called the supratemporal fenestra and the infratemporal fenestra. Anapsids are extinct, and while it is still debated as to whether Testudines(the order containing turtles and tortoises) are Anapsids, the general consensus is that they aren't. Synapsids are the lineage that would lead to mammals and our extinct relatives such as Dimetrodon and Gorgonopsids. Diapsids contain Archosaurs (which is made up of Crocodilians and their extinct relatives, Pterosaurs, Birds, and Non-avian dinosaurs) and Lepidosauria (which contains Plesiosaurs, Ichthyosaurs, Tuataras/Rhynchocephalia, and Squamata which are snakes and lizards). The position of Testudines is hotly debated and different papers on genetic studies have argued for placements as both basal Archosaurs and basal Lepidosaurs. That said, the most recent and comprehensive study done indicates a placement as a basal Archosaur. I know that this is quite large and long, but I hope that whoever is reading this learns something new 😃
