@@fizzzle So far I cannot tell the difference between blown on grips and double sided tape. That said I never really used build up wraps with the double sided, but I have used 2-3 wraps of masking tape when blowing on grips.
@@andrewyelanich7441 - I used to work for a top level custom fitter. We would use duct tape. In the couple of years I worked for him we had 2 or 3 players who hit well over 300 yards who had the grip slip. Nobody else had that problem. I assume masking tape has more grip/friction than duct tape.
Great video! After doing a couple clubs, I was able to do each club in about 5 minutes. Most of that time was spent removing the old grips that were installed by a sporting goods store. ONE TIP: Instead of dipping the tip in solvent to help slip it on the shaft, I used just a drop of dishwashing liquid to lube the inside tip of the grip.

If you don’t need anything sticking to the grip to keep it from sliding, then why do we use double sided tape for the conventional method? Couldn’t we just use masking tape and solvent to help the grip slide on, then when the solvent evaporates the grip itself would hold tight just like with compressed air? This just makes me wonder why we ever bothered with double sided tape in the first place. Also, thank you for posting this, I just tried it and I’ll be doing it this way from now on.
Just want to say I'd never heard of this method until I watched your video.In the process of installng some new fairway woods shafts for me 3+, 4 and 7 woods this spring (Hazardous RDX Blue) and I'm gooding to experiment with shaft length this spring. I put the grips on using your air method with Jumbomax grips. Worked extremely well...and now I can easily get them off if I want to shorten them. Great stuff and thank you.

I tried to take out my old grips which came with the clubs I bought and they glued it on very hard. Was only able to save 4 grips and blew the rest of them. So, this method works for some grips when the glue/solvent didn't stick permanently. But to put them on was just as easy as you demonstrated there. Very cool method. Thanks for the tips.
I've been doing this for years, but to remove grips I use a piece of plastic water pipe the size of the head of the grip to help prevent the grip bulging and bursting when I use the air also it allows me to use a higher pressure for stubborn grips.
I mistakenly used a little bit if dish soap to get the grip on initially and now the butt end of the grip is still turning even after 24 hours. Live and learn. Thanks for the video.
I've been using this technique to install and remove bicycle handlebar grips but I never thought about using the air method on golf club grips. I'll definitely give the air method a try the next time I re-grip my clubs. Here's a tip that may come in handy; sometimes new bicycle grips will slip a little on the handlebars. Just remove the grip and spray a little hairspray on the handlebar and/or inside the grip and reinstall, the added tack of the hairspray will prevent a slippery grip from moving.

Yes! So simple! Been able to install the JumboMax STR8 Ultralites using a similar car pump (lol 40dollar one) into my entire bag of clubs. I have to set the machine to around 85 PSI. For my irons, I used the masking tape underneath but for my driver, I did not - just to see how it does. NO ISSUES and it's been pretty good, does not slip and because it's air - OMG it's so easy to readjust the STR8 after tuning my driver to the right loft. Best thing since sliced bread. Thanks for the video! PS when I used tape & solvent, those JumboMax are almost IMPOSSIBLE to pull off the club unless you try the pressurized needle method. Almost feel like its better to just cut the grip but at $15 a grip, thats expensive. Using your this car pump, its been absolutely AMAZING for these larger grips.

Just did it with no vice just club, air pump, and a little hairspray (lube) in the kitchen on a driver. Took a few attempts to finalize alignment but worked great. Just put the head against something to push against.
First time gripping my clubs and saw this video, moved my air tank out to the shed and started removing grips then re-gripping them. VERY simple and fun, thanks for a very informative video.

Hey Shaun, I was a little worried about the grips moving as well but wanted to give this method a try. I've done my own grips in the past using the traditional method. First, this is much faster and cleaner than using solvent and grip tape. I did 2 clubs (1 steel shaft, one graphite) then took them outside and took some swings to see if I felt any movement. Seemed solid so decided to do the rest. Took me less than an hour to do all 13 clubs and 3/4 of that time was removing the old grips. Now that they're done this way I expect my next grip change will take less than 30 minutes. I've now played 3 rounds with them and there has been no movement at all. All grips are still perfectly aligned.
I have an unusual take down style electric classical guitar (same as currently on the space station) that lacked one of the faux bout features. The ones I have are made of 1/4” diameter solid aluminum rod overlaid with 1/4” inside diameter black polypropylene tubing. I tried various methods to get the plastic tubing over the aluminum over the years without success. By using a combination of lubricant, tubing pre-heating and an air compressor (based on viewing your video), I did it today. Thank you. I would have likely never done it alone.
For removing old grips, I place a pipe over the grip while inflating. When the grip bulges, the pipe evenly contains the grip and allows it to break free.
Also, if the grip doesn't come loose immediately, twisting it will usually break it free so it will come right off. Putting a piece of shaft tube over the grip when blowing it off helps contain any uneven swelling (which is not common). Air is less messy too. Watch out on the grips with a separate skin on them - like Winn for example and some SuperStroke grips. Thje skin can break loose and separate from the rubber underneath and ruin the grip. I usually put those on by painting the masking tape with rubber cement and putting the rubber cement down the grip with a dowel, then sliding the grip on. Obviously it can't be used right away with rubber cement.
With a pipe protecting from popping em, maybe I could use my el cheapo emergency 12v tire inflator. Of course these very cheap, common simple air compressors have no pressure regulation so closely monitor. Anyone try?
I’ve been doing this for years with a large compressor that’s out in its own room. No noise. I personally don’t use tape on my clubs. I do plug the end with tape. I first spay the shaft with cheap hair spray then blow on the grip with air. When the alcohol dries that grip is ready to go. It’s a trick I learned from a friend switching grips out on my motocross bike. That was back in the late 70’s. Been doing it ever since. Never had a grip fail.👍😊

Excellent once again. I did my first graphite regrip this weekend. One note...Winn grips may have an under listing that requires more attention to details in removing them! Persistence and patience and a Swiss Army knife blade help.
Good to know. Everyone says Winn can be a hassle, have not done any thus far. Figured a little more grip solvent and a little less PSI would be the plan of attack.
I changed grips for the first time and it was easy. I started with a manual air pump and it worked nicely until a grip burst and let me with a mild acoustic trauma. From then on I only used the knife that comes with the sets to change grips. Please be very careful with compressed air (and of course with the knife too!).

I've been using air for a couple of years and love to flexibility it gives me. I can match my grips to weather conditions. It takes me about 5 minutes to change a full set of clubs. And the best part is, I still have the other grips to put back on whenever I need to switch back.
@@ulster7717 Winn grips are difficult and I would defer to the traditional method for them. I am sure some people can get them on this way, but I would tear more grips than I would get installed. Cords will also be tricky at best.
Mid-sized grips are not always easy to find, at least with some brands. But this method should make it easier to get a standard grip to fit over a couple of layers of build-up tape, and thus create a mid-size grip diameter. Thanks for another great tip!
Going to give this a try. I tried to install a WINN Dri-Tac 2.0 standard on a standard steel shaft and could not get it to advance past 1/2 way. Maybe air will do the trick. Just got find a barb that I can adapt to my compressor hose.
Didn’t take long to figure this one out. Cleaned the shaft well, put a piece of masking tape on the butt end and viola! Went in like butter. Again, couldn’t get the grip to advance past half way with tape and solvent. Thanks again!
I'm convinced- I'll use this method when my grips arrive. With the solvent method you can twist up the tape and close the end of the shaft off. I guess that won't work here? Should I try to block.the grip hole to stop water getting in?
You can wrap the shaft the exact same way with masking tape as you would with grip tape so you can cover the shaft opening if you wish. I have actually started not fully covering the butt end when doing traditional gripping as I have found that you can end up with a pocket of solvent that never escapes and can lead to grip twisting well after the rest of the grip is dry.
Hi AJ, I have a question about shaft extensions. I need to length a wedge shaft and I have a plastic extension. Will it work? Is there anything to worry about? I know the rule is plastic to graphite and metal to metal. Since it’s a wedge, will it real matter? Thanks! I enjoy your videos.
My question is this. This will be my first time changing the grips on “new” clubs. I’m assuming they came from the factory (Callaway Mavrik) installed with tape and solvent. I’ve probably only played 60-70 rounds with the clubs, but am wanting to install larger grips. Will definitely use this method for installation but was hoping to use it to salvage the old grips JIC. Can this be done if they were installed with tape and solvent? That was a lot, I know.
You need some pic pipe to go over the grip if you are trying to remove taped grips with air. Personally I wouldn't bother, I've only managed to save a couple grips this way and almost went deaf in the process.
AJ, I've enjoyed watching several of your videos. I've picked up some good tips for club repairing clubs; fixing ferrules, centering shafts that need fiberglass tape, etc . Two questions, what epoxy do you use for securing heads to shafts, I have noticed it is black? Q2, what liquid solvent do you recommend for securing grips? I don't know if you have done a video on assembling and removing putter grips, I always find these harder to do. Recently I was challenged with removing a 17" Arm-lock grip ($50). I use the Golfworks Tour Set Plus epoxy most of the time. Grip solvent is just the basic Golfworks grip solvent. The big putter grips are very difficult to remove and save. Best option is probably the syringe method but I have very little experience with it.
Most grips will hold without any help. Softer grips like tour velvet, tour wrap, or PURE grips hold the best. Cord grips and Winn style grips are harder to work with. Tip I've had a couple people here tell me is to use some hair spray on the tape before you slide the grip on.
Usually put some grip solvent or mineral spirits down in there with a tee in the vent hole. Let it sit for 10 minutes then go back with a grip removal tool, wire hanger, or similar and scrap the tape loose. May take a couple times depending on the tape.
My understanding is this method won't work for that in most cases as it will likely pop holes in the grip before getting the whole grip freed up. I could be wrong on this, still very new to this method.
@@EFGMC Look at Chris Juhl's comment above - A piece of PVC just an eighth of an inch bigger ID than the OD of the grip placed over the grip prevents the grip from blowing up like a balloon and exploding in your face when you inflate it.
Yea I've used compressed air using both techniques mentioned here by other repliers. Just got tired of cutting off perfectly good grips when moving to midsize, etc. I found you must shove a skinny screwdriver down the grip and spray some WD40 or similar. Honestly kind of a PIA. Expanding grips also ruin the painted logos on grips sometimes.
A.J . Would a standard size Lamkin crossline grip require more than one wrap on a true temper xp95 shaft? What size masking tape should I use? What are you doing witb the air to remove the grip vs installing the grip? Would soap and water be a poor alternative to mineral spirits? You did say a raft adaptor to stick in the butt end of the club? Is that something that is sold separately from the compressor? Thanks in advance!🤙😀
Using air is the BEST way to install grips. I only use 2-3 sprays of solvent. Blow the grip on then pull it mostly off and use the air to blow out most of the solvent when resetting the grip. The grips will dry much faster.
The grips with "skins" (like Winn) will often come apart when air pressure is used. In addition to the usual grip solvent method, another method if you don't have a compressor or have skinned grips, is to use rubber cement. Use the same masking tape, mount the club in the vice, either use the brush in the little rubber cement jar to put the cement on the tape or use another method, then pour a little cement in the grip and use a dowel to spread it inside the grip. Push the grip on the shaft, standing to the side (the rubber cement sometimes squirts out the back grip hole). Once on, the grip alignment can be checked and adjusted. Then put the club aside to dry. Rub off any excess rubber cement after it dries - comes right off.
@@EFGMC That's weird. I wonder why they would give you grief over it. They could dismisss it as not for them, but to go out of their way to object is strange. Rubber cement was the first method I ever saw done. Turned out to be the least common way.

My golf life has changed in a particular way. WTF dude who re- gripped my 60 degree is a 7 iron length. Of course figured out later. Did the bs to correct. I’m on board to DIY.
You could probably use an airbrush compressor...as cheap or cheaper than a tire inflator through Harbor Freight and a lot of other places, and quieter, as well as smaller. For mobility, the inflator might be better, as most of them have some kind of 12v power supply that connects to your vehicle...but I'd go with the airbrush compressor for inside your shop.
Have you tried using a compressor with the JumboMax grips, either the ultra lights or the Zen lights? The reason I ask is that I’ve never had a problem using compressed air for putting on a grip until I recently tried to put on a Golf Pride Reverse Taper putter grip. I couldn’t get it to go down onto the shaft, even with zero masking tape. I think it’s because for the extreme shaping of those grips, they seem to be more plastic-like, rather than rubbery, so don’t seem to have the slight expansion needed to be blown on. The Jumbo Max grips are light for their size, so concerned they might also be more plastic/rigid, and therefore not able to be blown on. Any experience with those?
Winn are the hardest but can be done. Don’t know they are worth the effort though. This really works best with softer grips. Harder ones are both hard to install and more likely to slip.
I am having problems with my grips after using masking tape to build up my grips. I used 3 layers of masking tape and one layer double sided grip tape. Now my grips dont stick properly to the Clubs. I can twist the grips easily and they twist when i hit shots. Is the tape the problem?

I have heard of a couple people who install Winn grips with air. I don't. They just feel too fragile to me especially with the hard tips that make the air flow more restricted.

Any idea how to use this method with the new super stroke putter grips,the end where you fit valve is metal and so doesnt seal.ive done it but it was a struggle and just wondering if theres any methods to overcome the problem
If they have been on for a while, I would just cut them off and be done with it. This method doesn't work great for traditional installed grips, at least for me it doesn't.
That's the best part about this method, being able to save old grips!

How secure is the grip to the shaft. Do you get any play in the grip while playing a round or on the range?

It will be a roll of the dice when trying to remove grips installed the traditional way. Pulling air installed grips is again super easy though.

This technique worked great for installing an undersized grip on a standard shaft. I just skipped the tape and blew it onto the graphite shaft.

I’ve been doing this for years with a large compressor that’s out in its own room. No noise. I personally don’t use tape on my clubs. I do plug the end with tape. I first spay the shaft with cheap hair spray then blow on the grip with air. When the alcohol dries that grip is ready to go. It’s a trick I learned from a friend switching grips out on my motocross bike. That was back in the late 70’s. Been doing it ever since. Never had a grip fail.👍😊

Excellent once again. I did my first graphite regrip this weekend. One note...Winn grips may have an under listing that requires more attention to details in removing them! Persistence and patience and a Swiss Army knife blade help.
Good to know. Everyone says Winn can be a hassle, have not done any thus far. Figured a little more grip solvent and a little less PSI would be the plan of attack.
I changed grips for the first time and it was easy. I started with a manual air pump and it worked nicely until a grip burst and let me with a mild acoustic trauma. From then on I only used the knife that comes with the sets to change grips. Please be very careful with compressed air (and of course with the knife too!).
Yeah a grip installed with tape and solvent should be removed with a knife. Only air installed grips should be removed with air.

I've been using air for a couple of years and love to flexibility it gives me. I can match my grips to weather conditions. It takes me about 5 minutes to change a full set of clubs.
And the best part is, I still have the other grips to put back on whenever I need to switch back.
The ease of getting them back off is definitely my favorite part of the process.
I assume you cannot use this method with Winn grips. Please advise.
@@ulster7717 Winn grips are difficult and I would defer to the traditional method for them. I am sure some people can get them on this way, but I would tear more grips than I would get installed. Cords will also be tricky at best.
Mid-sized grips are not always easy to find, at least with some brands. But this method should make it easier to get a standard grip to fit over a couple of layers of build-up tape, and thus create a mid-size grip diameter. Thanks for another great tip!

That one was plug in however it wore out after a couple years. Now have a smaller rechargeable one from Amazon.

Going to give this a try. I tried to install a WINN Dri-Tac 2.0 standard on a standard steel shaft and could not get it to advance past 1/2 way. Maybe air will do the trick. Just got find a barb that I can adapt to my compressor hose.
Didn’t take long to figure this one out. Cleaned the shaft well, put a piece of masking tape on the butt end and viola! Went in like butter. Again, couldn’t get the grip to advance past half way with tape and solvent. Thanks again!

You don't need double sided tape to keep grips in place?
I'm convinced- I'll use this method when my grips arrive. With the solvent method you can twist up the tape and close the end of the shaft off. I guess that won't work here? Should I try to block.the grip hole to stop water getting in?
You can wrap the shaft the exact same way with masking tape as you would with grip tape so you can cover the shaft opening if you wish.
I have actually started not fully covering the butt end when doing traditional gripping as I have found that you can end up with a pocket of solvent that never escapes and can lead to grip twisting well after the rest of the grip is dry.
Hi AJ, I have a question about shaft extensions. I need to length a wedge shaft and I have a plastic extension. Will it work? Is there anything to worry about? I know the rule is plastic to graphite and metal to metal. Since it’s a wedge, will it real matter? Thanks! I enjoy your videos.

My question is this. This will be my first time changing the grips on “new” clubs. I’m assuming they came from the factory (Callaway Mavrik) installed with tape and solvent. I’ve probably only played 60-70 rounds with the clubs, but am wanting to install larger grips. Will definitely use this method for installation but was hoping to use it to salvage the old grips JIC. Can this be done if they were installed with tape and solvent? That was a lot, I know.
You need some pic pipe to go over the grip if you are trying to remove taped grips with air. Personally I wouldn't bother, I've only managed to save a couple grips this way and almost went deaf in the process.
AJ, I've enjoyed watching several of your videos. I've picked up some good tips for club repairing clubs; fixing ferrules, centering shafts that need fiberglass tape, etc .
Two questions, what epoxy do you use for securing heads to shafts, I have noticed it is black? Q2, what liquid solvent do you recommend for securing grips?
I don't know if you have done a video on assembling and removing putter grips, I always find these harder to do. Recently I was challenged with removing a 17" Arm-lock grip ($50). What about a video on these grips?

I use the Golfworks Tour Set Plus epoxy most of the time. Grip solvent is just the basic Golfworks grip solvent.
The big putter grips are very difficult to remove and save. Best option is probably the syringe method but I have very little experience with it.
From what I understood, you added the masking tape for grip thickness, but is the grip as well fixed even into a bare shaft?
It will hold similarly with or without masking tape, maybe even better on raw shaft depending on the grip model.

Most grips will hold without any help. Softer grips like tour velvet, tour wrap, or PURE grips hold the best. Cord grips and Winn style grips are harder to work with.
Tip I've had a couple people here tell me is to use some hair spray on the tape before you slide the grip on.

Usually put some grip solvent or mineral spirits down in there with a tee in the vent hole. Let it sit for 10 minutes then go back with a grip removal tool, wire hanger, or similar and scrap the tape loose. May take a couple times depending on the tape.

Can u show how to use air to take of "solvent" installed grips?
My understanding is this method won't work for that in most cases as it will likely pop holes in the grip before getting the whole grip freed up. I could be wrong on this, still very new to this method.
@@EFGMC Look at Chris Juhl's comment above - A piece of PVC just an eighth of an inch bigger ID than the OD of the grip placed over the grip prevents the grip from blowing up like a balloon and exploding in your face when you inflate it.

Yea I've used compressed air using both techniques mentioned here by other repliers. Just got tired of cutting off perfectly good grips when moving to midsize, etc. I found you must shove a skinny screwdriver down the grip and spray some WD40 or similar. Honestly kind of a PIA. Expanding grips also ruin the painted logos on grips sometimes.

Most tyre inflators in the uk are operated from a 12 volt plug in unit in the car,!!!! How did yours operate.regards pete.
Mine has both a car cigarette style plug and a standard American 2 prong electrical plug.

A.J . Would a standard size Lamkin crossline grip require more than one wrap on a true temper xp95 shaft? What size masking tape should I use? What are you doing witb the air to remove the grip vs installing the grip? Would soap and water be a poor alternative to mineral spirits? I always thought the solvent was necessary to make the tape sticky. Have you had any grips move or slip when hitting with them?
They can twist over time but you can work them back into place.

Using air is the BEST way to install grips. I only use 2-3 sprays of solvent. Blow the grip on then pull it mostly off and use the air to blow out most of the solvent when resetting the grip. The grips will dry much faster.
The grips with "skins" (like Winn) will often come apart when air pressure is used. In addition to the usual grip solvent method, another method if you don't have a compressor or have skinned grips, is to use rubber cement. Use the same masking tape, mount the club in the vice, either use the brush in the little rubber cement jar to put the cement on the tape or use another method, then pour a little cement in the grip and use a dowel to spread it inside the grip. Push the grip on the shaft, standing to the side (the rubber cement sometimes squirts out the back grip hole). Once on, the grip alignment can be checked and adjusted. Then put the club aside to dry. Rub off any excess rubber cement after it dries - comes right off.
I did this exact video a couple years ago. Got a lot of crap from people not liking or believing it works.
@@EFGMC That's weird. I wonder why they would give you grief over it. They could dismisss it as not for them, but to go out of their way to object is strange. Rubber cement was the first method I ever saw done. Turned out to be the least common way.

My golf life has changed in a particular way. WTF dude who re- gripped my 60 degree is a 7 iron length. Of course figured out later. Did the bs to correct. I’m on board to DIY.

You could probably use an airbrush compressor...as cheap or cheaper than a tire inflator through Harbor Freight and a lot of other places, and quieter, as well as smaller. For mobility, the inflator might be better, as most of them have some kind of 12v power supply that connects to your vehicle...but I'd go with the airbrush compressor for inside your shop.

Have you tried using a compressor with the JumboMax grips, either the ultra lights or the Zen lights? The reason I ask is that I’ve never had a problem using compressed air for putting on a grip until I recently tried to put on a Golf Pride Reverse Taper putter grip. I couldn’t get it to go down onto the shaft, even with zero masking tape. I think it’s because for the extreme shaping of those grips, they seem to be more plastic-like, rather than rubbery, so don’t seem to have the slight expansion needed to be blown on. The Jumbo Max grips are light for their size, so concerned they might also be more plastic/rigid, and therefore not able to be blown on. Any experience with those?
I think the light Jumbomax grips are far easier to install than the heavier ones.

Winn are the hardest but can be done. Don’t know they are worth the effort though. This really works best with softer grips. Harder ones are both hard to install and more likely to slip.
I am having problems with my grips after using masking tape to build up my grips. I used 3 layers of masking tape and one layer double sided grip tape. Now my grips dont stick properly to the Clubs. I can twist the grips easily and they twist when i hit shots. Is the tape the problem?

I have heard of a couple people who install Winn grips with air. I don't. They just feel too fragile to me especially with the hard tips that make the air flow more restricted.

Curious………do you replace the tape when you blow them off and put new grips on?
Any idea how to use this method with the new super stroke putter grips,the end where you fit valve is metal and so doesnt seal.ive done it but it was a struggle and just wondering if theres any methods to overcome the problem
I think it's always going to be a struggle with that grip. Luckily it's a very small percentage of total grips done.
Does this work on grips that have been on the club for an extended period of time? Also been put on with grip solvent and double sided tape.
If they have been on for a while, I would just cut them off and be done with it. This method doesn't work great for traditional installed grips, at least for me it doesn't.
