    Germany didn't violate Versailles by annexing Saarland, it was part of the treaty that in 15 years a referendum would be held and it was pro-reunification with Germany, being the territory was entirely German.

    Problem for the East German Socialist Republic: it was part of Prussia(on which Hitler had full power) and were very much in support of the Nazis as they were isolated from the mainland. Unless the URSS invade directly it wouldn't happen. The real threat is the army's High Command which would probably try to coup Hitler to avoid a seemingly unwinnable war with France.

    • @rewriting-history
      @rewriting-history  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I agree that Prussia was very pro-Nazi in our timeline, but you have to remember that this is an alternate timeline. I believe that support for the Nazi regime would nosedive when they fail to take the Saarland and after that, start losing the Rhineland to France in yet another war. After all they didn't want to be a French puppet, so they turn to the USSR for help.

    I always find it weird that everyone thinks that appeasement was some major mistake in the forein policy of the allies and that they expected hitler to back down after a while, since the goal of appeasement wasn't even to maintain peace. The allies knew a war with germany is coming. Their problems were that they just came out of the great depression, and their economies were in the trash. If uk and france declared war in 1934, nothing would have been solved, since their armies and industries were not ready at all. It would have taken them a couple years to even start considering fighting, so what difference does it make if the allies start the war in 1934, or in 1939.

    • @rewriting-history
      @rewriting-history  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree with you and I even mentioned with text bubbles and etc that it's not only to give Germany what they want so they can be peaceful, but also so the allies will get ready for a war

    • @cantripleplays
      @cantripleplays 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      EVEN IF that is true. Appeasement was STILL wrong. Let me tell you why: Germany was also fucked WORSE at that time and they just let Germany build up and they weren’t even building up themselves nearly as fast as Germany so delaying war only made it WORSE. Plus giving them Czechia gave them more military might

    • @cantripleplays
      @cantripleplays 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To make this more nuanced, a reason for appeasement is the political instability. However, even then by 1938 they easily could’ve justified saving Czechoslovakia

    France and Britain didn't oppose Germany's violations, because of the Great Depression, and disarmament. If France were to declare war in 1935, they might hold because of the Maginot, but it would not last long, as after decades of disarmament, Germany was much stronger than them.

    • @rewriting-history
      @rewriting-history  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That's the debate, some say France had the best army in the world at the time, some say Germany would win. This situation is very uncertain, but since the video us about France, I think that they should also win.

    The major reason why Italy had protected Austria in the early-mid 1930s was Italy didn't want Nazi Germany on her northern border especially since they suspected Germany would want South Tyrol back as it was Austrian before WWI, as well as probably Trieste and Fiume. When Italy became a pariah state after 1936 and cozied up to the Germans Hitler renounced claims to Italian territory. After the fall of Mussolini and German occupation of central and northern Italy and put Mussolini back in power Hitler had those former Austrian possessions of Italy annexed.

    Poland ironically proved to be a bit of an odd line in the sand for the UK and France compared to Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakia was one of the few functioning democracies in Central/Eastern Europe in 1938. Poland had a right-wing nationalistic and repressive government in the late 1930s and in 1938 had backed Germany over Czechoslovakia to grab a small slice of their neighbor. A year later they would regret that choice.
    Imagine if in 1938 Poland had supported Czechoslovakia and France and the UK had reached the end of their tether with Nazi Germany and the three had gone to war against Germany in support of Czechoslovakia then?

    Your definition of appeasement wasn’t quite right. It should end “to avoid, or give time to prepare for, conflict.” By 1936 the Conservative party already understood the need for rapid rearmament to face a resurgent Germany. By 1938, the Labour Party would follow.

    I don't know if the nationalists would be victorious though in Spain. One of the key reasons why they won was the overt support they received from Germany and Italy, but if Germany is far weaker and Italy is actively focused on limiting Germany's expansion, I don't see them diverting the resources and personnel to Spain to assist Franco. Far more likely the civil war drags on for a time with the Nationalists unable to cross over into Iberia proper which would give France time to eventually turn around and support the Republicans to their south to help keep them going the way Germany had in the previous few years or falling under Soviet influence.

    • @rewriting-history
      @rewriting-history  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with you, but Germany would still be able to participate in the Spanish Civil war. They just won't commit as much, I don't think that they were the deciding factor in the war.

    • @Arcboltkonrad13
      @Arcboltkonrad13 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rewriting-history Agreed Germany wasn't the defining factor, but Italy was a MAJOR factor. Franco and much of his cronies and troops were stuck in the Canaries and Spanish-held Morocco and couldn't cross over the Straits to get into Spain proper until Italy sent planes to Franco which then airlifted him into Spain. If Italy is eyeballing a possible war with Germany (if not already being at war) I don't see them diverting the planes to Morocco in time for the Nationalists to really win. By the time the war with Germany is over, Italy will have been given a few strong blows and would need time to recover while also assisting their new puppet Austria and allies Hungary and Bulgaria in preparation for a possible war with Yugoslavia and/or Greece (maybe even Turket to get the claims on Turkey granted to them at the end of WW1).

    In reality France was too busy fighting herself after the Great Depression hence it wouldn’t be possible to intervene. Although the recession was mild, the economic downturn still led to the formation of popular front. The low unemployment was largely due to the fact that France had lost 1 out of 4 young men of age under 24 during WW1. The economic woes on the other side across the channel had it way worst so British really isn’t worth mentioning.

But I mean what if the Union army armed a lot more slave during the civil war and then slave communities during reconstruction. After seeing southerners deny them rights and threats like the KKK appear and before they lose their limited roles in power like governors they make a coordinated effort to rebel. The union would be exhausted and would likely prefer to establish a freed state in the southern states as a recompense to slaves and to make their occupation of the northern part of the southern states easier.
