Depends on who you talk to. There is a lot of controversy if it’s legal or not. But I’ve twisted my straps for 10 years now and never had any issue at all.

If you have a really high load you and need more height you can use the same sling method but between the knees with your back to the trailer. Think granny bowling style.
I appreciate the vid bud... I did some flatbed work back in the 90s but it was all chain loads... been doing reefer work for years but Just started a new gig with strap loads and this helped... Just one question... What Im doing now I cant go too tight with the straps... and most of the straps I will be using are only 2".. (Very light stuff that bends).. should I still be putting a twist in them?
I would put a twist in them still especially if you can’t go very tight because of the frieght. Even a 2” strap will vibrate at highway speeds. Essentially the twist just makes the strap handle the wind better. So instead off it being a flat surface that the wind can catch, you are rounding it off so the wind won’t catch it. If that makes sense.
Ok so people have been trying to show me this “easy” way of throwing straps for the last couple years or longer and I finally GET it!! I’m going to try this tomorrow lol. Your very informative and an excellent teacher, however I have to ask…. Isn’t that short strapping? I was taught you can only strap like that in a conestoga or a curtain side. Also why do you strap to the rub rail? That’s my biggest pet peave! The guys at my work drive me crazy strapping over the rail for one and when you tighten down your bending the shit out of it!! Then theyv secure it TO the rub rail and I don’t think that’s secure, am I wrong? Aren’t you supposed to hook underneath in case of an accident they don’t get torn off or ripped/rubbed off (that’s why it’s called the rub rail lol) I’m not criticizing you I promise. I love strapping like that it’s so much faster but maybe the guys are just anal or just feeding me bs cause I am a girl.

N it's amazing...its called a pulling scissor clamp and strap...look it up ...peace

My comments are most likely for brand new strap throwers. As us old guys do it the way that works best for us. Don’t take this the wrong way, your methods are your preference. I haul building block for new building foundations of all sizes and shapes to include brick, patio pavers & bags mortar/cement & big pallet size 3000 pound bags of clean sand. I always throw my straps from down low & over the top of the load to the other side strap rail, like one would roping a calf or steer or uncooperative animal to brand it or give it medical care. I do not roll up & toss straps like you do. Never have thrown out my shoulder or whatever difficulty you have had. I see most flat bedders out there doing it like I do. TMC seems to be the most skilled. They are sort of the USMC of trucking. Our cubes (pallets)with block on them are 3-5 feet high. So tossing the strap all the way over both cubes to hook the other side takes Calf roping skills to be sure it goes all the way over both pallets and stays straight with no twists. On.y about 3 feet of slack is left in the strap for our loads. I have watched folks toss there straps your way. To me it takes unnecessary extra time. I can watch the loaders put 12-14 cubes of block weighing around 40,0000 on my trailer In about 10 minutes. I then secure the block with “L” cages to keep it coming loose or popping out- then toss straps, hook & tighten & am rolling in 15 minutes. Quick, efficient and secure. Your method does work, but labor intensive and slow. Just my input. I see a couple new guys doing your demonstrated method and I want to say hey your wasting energy & time. Just offering a perspective I feel is better. Thx for putting your video out. Be safe out there no matter how you secure your load.
I know it's an old comment, but trying to make sense of how you throw straps. You don't keep them rolled for storage, or are you saying you throw the hook end? I'm about to get into flatbed, and looking up info on load securment.
I’m used to the stamps with the chain and hook on the. Company I’m with now doesn’t use those. It still bothers me that Americans use the rib tail to secure the straps. That is not allowed here in Canada since it’s not load rated.
What are your trailers made of... wood?? You're full of shit, ALL trailers sold in the United States and Canada have to have a WLL on spools, pockets and rails. Get educated on your profession.

You will be fine. Just don’t be in a rush when to strap or chain down. Remember an extra strap or 2 is better than not enough. It’s also easier to strap properly when you get loaded vs. having something happen and try to fix it roadside later on. Also remember to check your straps whenever you stop. That will save you from loose straps. Hope this helps.
The strap throwing part was very good! Obviously that technique creates a slingshot effect. The intentional twist in the strap is wrong as it creates a weak point. In some countries, the transport authorities would fine you for having twists in your straps.
I have never had anyone from DOT ever say anything about them being twisted. I don’t know where someone would get the idea a twist makes a weak point. Did you know by creating a half twist on your strap when transporting can actually make your straps more secure? When putting a half twist in the strap this reduces the flapping of the strap. This not only keeps your straps more secure when transporting but this could also help make your straps last longer by having your straps not rub against sharp corners or create heat from friction that could make burns on your tie downs that may cause the straps or tie-down straps to be replaced due to becoming unsafe.
@@TruckingLife In America that may be the case. In other countries, having twists in your straps will definitely incur a fine from DOT equivalent authorities. Perhaps a twist creating a weakness in a strap occurs over time. Either way, it's definitely a thing taught in other countries.
Have you ever thrown a strap and not know it was twisted over a load of lumber or anything that kinda shape & gone down the road and you know damn well the straps are tight but for some reason the top of the strap is flapping? I believe that is the weak point they are talking about. Twists do create a weak point but not the way he’s doing it, his way actually keeps them tighter in my experience anyways. I used to haul lumber every day for three years and I always put a twist. That way you can tell if your straps are loose cause if a twisted strap flaps pull over cause they’re loose!
Some say the straps won't get as tight because you are compressing the strap material. Others say it wears out the straps quicker, because they are constantly in the weather. Probably just comes down to company policy/ personal preference. Don't know how true it is, but also heard some places don't allow you to throw the hook end. Been reading up on flatbed getting ready to hopefully soon start driving. Heard or read a lot of different things, but it's all really rumor since no one has shown evidence to back up the claims.
This is a nice throw technique but ask any DOT officer and they will say that’s illegal to winch it down like that...You must have 2-3 inches of strap going through the winch and definitely not folded over
There is no regulation on folding the strap in the usa. Strap must go all the way threw the winch and must be enough strap to wrap all the way around the winch.
I could see how that would come in handy on a taller load but if you can't throw a roll of strap over a lumber load like that you probably shouldn't be flat bedding LOL
You’re welcome. I use a strap roller that you can buy at the truck stop. But I know guys who use cordless drills. That does it fast if you remember to charge your batteries lol

I also questioned that. In a curtain side it is ok but not on a flatbed is what I was taught 🤷🏻♀️
Nice video. But per CA law, they want to see at least 2 inches of strap coming through the opposite side of the winch.
