  • In this video I tell you basically everything I had to go through in order to be where I am right now in Geometry dash.
The cost of being a good creator may be a little too high, but if you take it slow, you will eventually succeed.
I really hope you enjoy this video, thanks for watching :)

As a professional artist in my free time, I agree with all your points: How many beginners usually like their own creations no matter the quality, how most people have art criticism (constructive and non-constructive), the negatives of social comparison, and going out of your comfort zone! You are a legend and I am glad you have made a mark on the community! 👍

I always felt bad about how bad of a creator I am, but I totally agree with everything you said! After being in the community for a few years, the pressure stopped getting to me as much and I learned to do what I enjoy. I think the hardest thing to deal with as someone gets better at creating is realizing that they really aren't that good, and once you actually understand what is good and what is really bad it can be hard to live up to the expectations you not only et yourself, but feel like others are expecting of you to consider you a good creator. I'm glad someone like you, who has reached a pinnacle in creating was able to make a video like this. Super helpful not only with my mindset but also my own motivation :D

How to make featured levels: Pick a good song, waste hours trying to place multiple pulse, move alpha, and spawn triggers which actually sync, make multiple designs, add lots of glow/background/block/everything detail, have no missing block corners, don't make any excessive/not good looking/bad/likely to be critically commented on/copied/non-original parts at all, profit from creator points, earn a side debuff of people asking you to decorate their 1.1-decorated levels.

I feel totally identified with this video, I've lost motivation for creating more than a year ago and it really is striking to see you went through something similar and succeeded in overtaking the situation. You know, we have a lot to learn about this video, stuff like not taking the game seriously or not taking all feedback as an absolute truth are things that have been turning this game into a job for a long time and that's just not what I want for this game.
Not only all of this but I've also been less motivated for literally anything lately, outside of GD, so hearing you talk about this and telling us your experience is really, and I mean, really relieving.

I've been playing for 9 years now and literally hundreds of times by now I'd start a level and quit because of putting so much pressure on myself to build a good level and I never ended up creating much more than a layout or a 10 second part. And congratulations on becoming a "good" creator after so much hard work, you really deserve it :)

What you talk about in this video is the absolute truth. I most definitely cas relate to most of the things you said here. My goal as a creator at first was to get as many CP as possible, i was just creating for CP. After releasing my level "Hyper" i wanted it to ger rated so bad. But after the first month i lost hope, 3 mod sends, but still no rate. I was so demotivated.
After a while i realized that I had fun when it came to the creating process and bringing my levels to life. I then gave up on the goal to get cp and instead focused on the fun aspect of creating and improvement!
Later on my level finally got rated, i was so happy, it motivated me so much! I just kept creating and released another level called Cyber Blues, it also got rated but it wasn't as exciting as before.
At that moment i realized my goal in this game: To become the greatest creator Geometry Dash has ever seen by creating levels that take players on a journey of the worlds i create in the game whilst having fun doing what i love!

  • @miloyall
    @miloyall ปีที่แล้ว +1

Appreciation is relative; if you make something to your liking as a brand new creator, you’ll be proud of what you made no matter what because deep down you subconsciously know that you did the best you could, and that that sets the bar for what you think is good. If you send that same thing to an old creator, they wont be able to appreciate it as much as you can, and the second you see a better level your internal bar will be raised and you’ll suddenly think your level is crap.
Part of being a creator is testing around. Your first level will be crap, as your second and third and fourth, but you’ll slowly get better. If you don’t want to face that, being a creator isn’t for you.
    Great video as always, man!

  • @cegexen8191
    @cegexen8191 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Also, for not getting demotivated, even if i wanted to be a good creator, it can't happen in the blink of an eye. I literally had NO hints of how the editor worked (i was placing blocks under the ground) but i think the most important thing in the journey is as you said, to enjoy what you do. Personally, i went from someone who can't place blocks correctly to a creator with a community that say my levels need to be featured. The journey was maybe 4 years long, but as you said, you have to take it slow :)

A lot of you you said resonates with me although I never really got frustrated with feedback. I've always tried to keep improving in the face of criticism to try to become one of the best geometry dash creators. At some point, nearly everyone can applaud a creator for being the best, but to that creator, it is never enough. I've always faced a lot of pressure to only build "masterpieces" and if I don't live up to that expectation others would be disappointed in me. This had led me to expect masterpieces from myself, starting an endless cycle. One of my projects has taken over 3 years and still counting. Although it is excessive, I genuinely feel like I HAVE TO keep building and spending years on projects. I feel like what you get in the end is nothing compared to the amount of effort one puts into the level, which is really depressing. Many creators go unappreciated yet have such high standards placed on them.
The best advice I have to get good feedback is to dm some creators personally. I find that servers like GDCS are either too nice or people just dont' know what they are talking about.

I relate to this a lot more than I thought I would. I struggle with taking every suggestion as a demand, something I have to do.
I spent like a year making random, terrible decorations, hoping someone would eventually say I made something really cool. I even got into minigames, thinking that creating them would impress people, but they never really did and my decoration was still terrible. I couldn’t take feedback at all - I’d lash out and insult anyone who didn’t compliment the things I made, coming up with lame excuses for why what I made isn’t bad.
So here I am today. I don’t know how good my decorating skills are because I usually am too demotivated to build. I have a hatred for the creating community because of its ridiculously high standards, as well as a hatred for any level or creator that is consistently good (White Space (XenderGame), Change of Scene (bli), CuLuC’s part in Emerald Realm, etc.), because I feel like they’re stealing my chance at getting recognized as a good creator.
I have made some decoration of which I and my friends have actually really liked, but it’s nowhere near the immaculate levels I imagine in my head all the time.
My plan for now is likely to force myself to build a full, rateworthy level. I feel like getting a rate will motivate me to try my best.

I would really do my best to improve in the game, take lots of negative and positive feedback for collabs, to the point where I got so used to it that when I tried making my own levels, I'd instinctively delete shit if it wasn't good enough. I have thrown away atleast 14 solo projects in my whole time playing this game (19 more if you count normal layouts), and there is only one where I am doing now and decided "Fuck it Imma just create for the fun of it". I didn't want to just make something random for no reason, but I am making it solely to piece my own ideas together to create something that a regular gd player would enjoy.

The major demotivation sets in at 2 different points. When you realise how long the journey is and when your own standards are too high. This happens to me way too often.
But I personally enjoy creating because of how much it can force you to be creative + overcoming demotivation is motivating.

You're still WAY better at creating than me. My designs are very simple yet ok looking, fitting more in 1.9 than in 2.1, and even if I do make a good level it takes months. I just can't be bothered to finish my levels, they can be put off indefinitely, many unfinished to this day, the only good levels I actually finished being Nightly Fantasy and Cluttered Travel, with Cluttered Travel being unverified for ~13 months before I beat it. And then I rebeat it a few times. Also, I quit the game a few times, but am kinda coming back, recently having beaten Electrodynamix (and then rebeating it twice after).

This advice is actually really helpful, thanks.
I'm trying to get better at creating rn, but its kinda hard bcs I want to make memorable levels at the same time. I want my levels to be experiences as well, you know? I often get demotivated by this, not exactly out of defeat but more out of fear. I usually finish a layout part, and have this really perfect level in mind that I want to create. But its too fuzzy, and I can't actually make out any of the details. I then stop working on it cause I'm worried it won't live up to what I want it to.
So yeah, hopefully things work out, and thanks for the heads up about the nightmare to come.

absolutely great video. i totally understand demotivation. while maybe not in decoration .every time i start a layout i barely ever finish it. and i feel like finishing it but just my whole mind says no. its really frustrating actually. like I have a really good plan on a lvl but then in and hour or so all the motivation just drop to 0%.

I definitely agree man. I used to have such a strong desire to become a really good layout creator. I constantly tried to join collabs to get my name out there, but it never really paid off. I also constantly tried to get feedback on my layouts just like you did and had a very similar experience. However, about a year or so ago I watched a video from Marwec as I was super inspired by his style at the time. Someone in the comments asked how he got as good as he is. He responded saying to just make something you like. He never really looked for feedback anymore and just made what came to his mind. This really inspired me. I also stopped joining every single collab and tried to make more solos. The main stuff I’m working on at the moment is some of my best work ever. For once I actually feel genuinely proud with my works and have desire to grind out solos. Sadly it’s been difficult though as I’m a college student and have many responsibilities. Luckily I’m on summer break, so I want to finally finish my current projects!

One last thing: If you're starting with GD creating and want to achieve a featured level, you really should take it slow, but mainly make levels just for fun. CP will come for sure! :)

Ive been creating and playing this game since late 1.8, and my goal has always been to become a good creator like you or samifying, and while I feel like im noticably better, sometimes I still feel down about all of the stuff I make. Like theres times where I torture myself because I feel like ive been doing it for so long, but I just cant. It feels like people are born with a natural talent that I just, dont have, that or its a basic skill everyone has that I dont by default. One of my irl friends, who is entirely focused on playing rather than creating, got into the editor because of me. And, its safe to say, he's definitely 100% betterthan me in every way shape and form. He started using it in late 2.1, YEARS after I started and he's already better, and its a huge demotivating factor. I dont understand how you can deal with it constantly

I heavily relate to this video. Ive always wanted to improve and get better and better with each level I built, but it demotivated me a lot because it was hard to do that consistently. Eventually I said screw it, accepted that my creating abilities arent the best, and lowered my standard a bit, and im glad I did! I can still build cool things, but not worry about the finest detail. I no longer spend over a month to build a level 👍

i have a lot to say about this video, all positive, but due to language barrier, it's kinda hard. All i want to say is thanks for sharing this. I relate to the beginning part of the video, where i want to create masterpieces in GD that everyone will remember, levels like Lit Fuse, ISpy, you name it. But i know it would take a really long time. I'm currently finished the layout of my 2 minute level, though it's been rough decorating it. i don't know when it will be released, in the state where i'm quite proud of my own works, but i hope it will, maybe one day.

As a rather newer creator, this is indescribably accurate. Trying to make a level that impressed others made me overall demotivated and I stopped creating. I eventually returned nearly a year later (I took a break from June to January), this time keeping the lvl I started mostly secret except for a few close friends. This was the best thing I did as I found it much easier to create a lvl on my own terms than that of others who would probably never even play the lvl. Surprisingly, that lvl turned out to be my best yet!
Another big part was building the lvl slowly, which definitely made it easier to stay motivated. That and being happy with how much you have finished, and not worrying about how much is left. All of those made the creating process more smooth and enjoyable.
(Also... was that music at the very end nostalgic to anyone else?)

I've been building on Geometry Dash for 2 years. I just build a few levels just for fun. But one day I realized that all this time I still couldn't make a GOOD block design and BG design, and I was getting tired because there was no progress. Because of that, I quit of Geometry Dash for 3 years. Then at this point, for some reason some video of Geometry Dash levels reappeared on my TH-cam recommendations (including videos from your channel). I tried to see it again, and I started to be motivated to try building level again in GD. Maybe I'll just take it easy for now without any pressure from myself.
Slow progress with fun is better than fast progress with depression

As a beginner music producer, I can say that demotivation is complicated, recently I don't feel motivated to produce, it's not because of the low numbers of views/streams, I just don't like the result, I don't feel motivated to produce anymore. Honestly, I don't see any more reason to produce recently, most of my projects I start doing, I don't even get to the middle of the song and I stop, close fl studio and repeat that, new project, I do something, and I realize that it's not getting good and I close the project. I was never one to ask people for feedback, I mostly watched tutorials on how to do better things, because a certain "feedback" that I received was something that I simply felt humiliated, but it helped me a little, that's when I started to understand music in theory. Anyway, producing music is something I like, when I want/I can finish it. Nice video btw

This is my 2nd time typing this due to my browser crashing for an unknown reason but I really wanna talk more about the issues you listed in your video. Starting off the criticism against creators not providing any feedback whatsoever and just being a a hole in general to other creators has become such a massive issue for the creating community as a whole being almost the biggest issue whilst being a creator. I myself am a gameplay/decorater in the game and have dealt with this issue a lot. I showed someone my decoration for a level I was making and got entirely crapped on by them just talking about everything in it being bad and even making it like an essay long with like A+ english grammar which I must admit was extremely tedious yet I got over it quickly. However, I've seen crazy cool and good creators in the game leave due to this issue and actually get heavily affected by it. For all we know some of these creators could have even suicided because they think they have no purpose in this world when deep down they did and someone made them think they didn't. Now onto the 2nd biggest problem in creating which is demotivation. I heavily agree that being demotivated is such a big issue in the creating community because it causes creators like me to drop phenomenal projects just because we think we should be doing something else with our life that doesnt truly make us happy and proud of what we do. Its been truly awful for me since I can hardly have fun creating because I just think that im always unfit to be a creator when nobody truly is unfit to be a creator. I bet a ton of the levels we are excited to have released soon are taking longer than usual because of having loads of demotivation on their projects that they end up sometimes deleting them entirely. I used to be annoyed at the fact levels weren't getting released when I expected them too so I'd get mad at the creators when I was younger but now that I'm older, I care more for the creators than their actual levels. I also think everyone should take this into consideration and think about the creators, not the levels. Mainly so that people understand why they aren't being finished and maybe even have the power to motivate them into finishing their projects. To sum it all up, a win in creating is having fun and being proud with being productive of what you create, even if most of the community hates it. With all that being said, this video is absolutely phenomenal and I hope that you can continue to be as happy and motivated as you are now to pump out universal masterpieces. Excited for what you have to offer Vit12.

As someone who's been also creating for 5 years, (since i downloaded the game) I can relate to this. I only improved after 2 years of creating after receiving feedback and honestly I'm proud of what I've done but as time passes, I've been losing motivation to create... I am a multi-style creator so I am not as good as you or anyone else since I am not good at every decoration at all... I fully lost motivation after I got my second rated level because I ran out of ideas and I don't feel like creating anymore... Well that is until a month ago, I got back in the game, fully motivated somehow. I create for fun nowadays but I still take my creations seriously. To be honest, I must agree with your advice. Geometry Dash is just a game, you don't have to take everything seriously when it comes to creating. Every good creator nowadays has been through that in the past and look at them now... We we're like them in the past. I think this would be a good advice for new creators. Most likely they will have a lot of potential.
Okay I don't know what I'm saying anymore but as a creator myself, thanks for making this video
