Big stores and supermarkets in Scotland are usually open late, most until 8 or 9pm, and an increasing number of them 24 hours a day. Sure, way out in the middle of nowhere, the small, family-run stores usually shut early, but that's the same in rural USA too.

Yeah, if you are out at loch ness obviously it is a bit out of the way, its a very rural out-of-the-way place. But for most other places we have wal-mart. Its called ASDA, we have lays chips, theyre called walkers crisps. We tend to have all your stuff, it just has a stupid different name! Gas is petrol, kilometeres are miles, etc, etc. You get the picture ;)

    • @BuckFastZombie
      @BuckFastZombie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

And obviously a km isnt a mile, im messing. One thing you have much better though are portion sizes. Super-size etc is banned here, and it shouldnt be. Super-size fries are awesome.

Just the reply I was going to make, Luscaslayer. Larger Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys, all stock cheap jeans, pretty good ones mostly. As to early closing, at least England and Scotland are better than France and most other European countries, especially on Saturday afternoon.

I agree with everything you said and I am a Scottish tour guide. I believe the tourist market here does get a little ripped off because the cost of living here is so high however there are a few tips I can give for sightseeing and saving money:
    1. Most (not all) of the castles and country estates are run by either Historic Scotland or the National Trust for Scotland. Invest before you travel in an explorer pass which allows entry into so many castles and you will save yourself a fortune. The castles have so much on and the likes of Stirling Castle, you could spend the whole day there and with a pass if there is an event on (which they do often with the likes of costume actors) it is all included in your pass, so no hidden costs. I would highly recommend getting a National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland Explorer Pass!!!
    2. Try stay a little outside of the main cities, you will most likely find accommodation and at a much lower rate than in the main city. Most out of city towns re linked to the main cities via public transport and I would not recommend driving around Edinburgh or Glasgow anyway!.
    3. Tesco Extras and their Sainsbury's and Asda equivalents are usually open 24 hours and offer affordable (quite cheap actually) clothing and other goods such as electrical, gifts etc. There is almost definitely a supermarket like these in most of the towns in Scotland although in the remote Highlands you will be lucky to find a local shop nevermind a supermarket but that is why I love the Highlands, its just you and the mountains ;-). The only issue, not that it is really an issue is that you cannot buy alcohol from a supermarket before a certain time in the morning or after 10 in the evening.
    4. Pack waterproof clothing.....we have to sacrifice the rain with our luscious green scenery, without it I don't think it would be nearly as beautiful ;-) If you come in summer you can still burn though so don't forget the sunblock!
Anything else, feel free to ask :-)

You forgot about midges, if you ever go in a hike or camping trip in the highlands you will be swamped by millions of the blood sucking bastards. They are so bad that most tourists that go hiking in Scotland only go once because of the midges.

A lot of larger shops and supermarkets are open 7 days a week, and some are open until 10pm at night. Public transport is pretty good. For example you can take a train to Kyle of Lochalsh, which is only a few miles from where this video was made (Eilean Donan Castle). The West Highland line from Glasgow to Mallaig is a very beautiful train journey. If you don't want to rent a car or can't drive there are plenty of bus tours of the highlands.

Speaking as a Scot I can confirm that these ‘hates’ absolute utter bollocks. I don’t know where this guy shops but all the major supermarkets are open late if not 24hrs. Accomodation is plentiful in all towns and cities across the country. The trains run EVERYWHERE....even to where my family come from in the very far north! I think this guy has probably only heard of Edinburgh & Glasgow! The weather in Scotland is what it is- grow up and wrap up! If we didn’t have the rain then we wouldn’t have the amazing scenery we have!

One way to get around is by ferry. We went to Oban via a rental car and then took a ferry to the Island of Mull (with car) and then took a teeny boat to Iona. Loved it! It was relaxing not to worry about driving.
One memory which wasn't funny at the time, but is now, is on the way back to our Inn, my husband while looking for a Pub, rode up on a curb and flattened a tire. I held an umbrella over him in the pouring rain while he changed it. The clouds got blacker and blacker on the way back and we kept being stopped by the sheep who were crossing the roads. That Lagavulin back at the Inn tasted mighty fine when we finally got back.
Oh, and the Oban Distillery was a great tour/visit. And I like how the Inn keepers will tell you to check out your room first before reserving it.

Just one word of caution on the public transport front: it's true that some places are hard to reach and trains especially are more expensive than in the rest of Europe, thanks to privatisation. But the trains do go farther than Aberdeen and Inverness: you can get to the west highlands (Oban or Fort William and Mallaig, from Glasgow) or Kyle of Lochalsh (the last place before Skye) from Inverness. You can even catch the overnight sleeper from London and wake up as the train crosses Rannoch Moor and passes Ben Nevis on its way to Fort William. All these train routes are beautiful; some would say they're among the most beautiful in the world.

Just came back from a week long trip in the Highlands (Stayed in Inverness). We found in Inverness that we could find some stores opened until 9PM (Yes, tourist places, and the Tesco (Grocery store) great cheap eats. It was a wonderful trip and I can't wait to go back. As far as castles go, Dunrobin is worth the trip (Can get there by train out of Inverness). Oh, the food was very good.

one thing to look out for especially in the highlands is the dreaded Midge. they will drive you mad and most repellents don't work . they are little critters the size of a mosquito but without the disease, the tick is serious mainly found where sheep and deer are present and oh yes we have a snake! the adder but it bites maybe 2 people a century no not the same one. give my regards to my favourite american TV character s homer Simpson and that great Scot groundsman Willie

@FuneralDust666 Oh yeah, that is plenty of time. The thing is in scotland you stay in these really "quaint" bed and breakfasts but since they only have 2 or 3 rooms they dont have a website so you may want to go through a Bed and Breakfast website to find a place. I remember when we were looking it took quite a bit of time since we did not know where to look to stay when we were just going to be driving around the whole country. and just fyi, we love scotland, it is beautiful!

I guess being a tourist and driving around Scotland for a month and being annoyed at lots of the towns shops closing at 6 must be wrong... but at least i got the left side correct :) and going to John Lewis or M&S is not really what shops tourists are looking for. I'm glad my love for scotland did not even come across at all in this video to you :) Thanks for watching and commenting!

Been to Scotland a couple times and never had problems finding a nice B&B for a reasonable price. Only one time in North Berwick we had to sleep in the car :) (Highland games and a golf tourney made it a bad timing to arrive late in the evening). And the huuuuge B&B breakfasts usualy saves you the lunch :)

I was thinking the same thing. These are problems easily fixed! I pay less for groceries here in Scotland than in USA. Restaurants are expensive because staff all make minimum wage ($10 an hour) and tipping is often not expected but when it is, 10 percent is acceptable. But just, buy groceries. Public transport is great; not sure what he means there... There are so many things you can do for free: Standing stones, castle grounds, ancient cathedrals and cemeteries... Think out of the box!

Most of this is true - but I want to take issue with you over shop opening hours. I live in the very far north of Scotland and we have 3 supermarkets locally. One is open until midnight another until 10.00pm and the 3rd until 9.00pm. It's true that many "High Street" shops may close around 6.00pm but the out of town shops in the larger towns are all open late and many supermarkets are open 24/7.

If you wish to visit castles or estates etc look up the ones you wish to see and who they are owned by, it may be a idea to join something like The National Trust, they run so many fabulous castles, houses and gardens all over the UK it would take years to see them all, the NT Scotland is part of the NT so you can get into property’s all over they also sell various types of membership and I think as long as you use it about 4 times you will be saving. Most of there properties will have a great tea room and a we shop. I live near Chester and Chuck Castle is fantastic it looks like a perfect huge castle with torcher chambers , keep, towers also stunning gardens. What I’m trying to suggest is if you get a membership rather than pay every visit you will be so pleased. Look up the National Trust,

Mark you can solve 2 of your problems in 1 go -- transport and accommodation - hire a campervan. By the way there is (legally) no such think as American whisky. There is Scotch whisky, Irirsh whiskey but no other. Maybe you mean bourbon? It's the same as champagne, it only comes from the region in France where it originates. Whisky is a word that is Anglicised from the Gaelic uisge beatha or usquebaugh, pronounced uska bay, the water of life. Enjoy yourself but drink wisely!

Hey there! Thanks for you fair and well-balanced video. I am a Scot living in Glasgow and I have to say your 5 things to hate are probably the 5 things I hate too! Thankfully the love far outweighs the hate :) Next time you come over you should ask for some tips on where to eat as Scottish food can be absolutely amazing - the seafood here is incredible. Happy travels!

I wouldn't say all the shops close at 6. Most of the ones on the main street do, but if you find a Tesco or something, they are usually open 24 hours and sell all sorts of things. That's like our Walmart xD

The stores in the "tourist" areas close at 6. But you can buy clothes, food etc 24 hours a day in a number of the bigger supermarkets like Tesco and Asda (Walmart). Even the non 24 hour supermarkets are open til 10 or 11pm in most places. Also the shopping centres (Malls) like the "Gyle shopping centre" in Edinburgh, have most of their stores open til 8pm (9pm on Thursdays and Fridays). Apart from that though, good vid Wolter.

@xbornstubbornx i do remember meeting a couple Scottish girls a few years ago in Poland and one of them had to translate the other girls English for my friend and I as she had such a strong accent. I still laugh at that now, though nowadays I can understand most of the hard core scottish accents, there are still some that leave me not understanding anything. But it still makes me smile. thanks for posting!

Great video, wolter, thank you for doing the job that the Scottish Tourist Board itself seems sadly (and inexplicably) reluctant to do. Really glad you had a good time here, and impressed that you noted one of Scotland's least-recognised resources - the people who live here.

Mark, if I might, I would like to amend one thing you said here, which I agree with, but as a matter of comparison: mass transit in Scotland is not NEARLY as good as in England or Continental Europe, but it is still WAY better than in the U.S., especially in Southern Scotland. You know how bad it sucks in the U.S., but here is an example (I can't drive any longer, due to seizures, so I try to use mass transit): a trip of 300 miles, due to irregular and out of the way bus routes, took me 20 hours! To get from where I live in Hampton, VA., to Elizabeth City, NC, maybe 50 miles, literally takes all day by mass transit! If I had the energy, in both cases, I could literally ride a bicycle to may destination faster. Only point being, even in Scotland it is better than here.

Agree with somethings that you said for 1that scotlands a lovely place.Scotland has probably the best sea food in the world so as for food theres plenty there, also the rural shops are shut early but if u plan ahead we do have 24hr shops open in the towns and cities. Also if your going to stay in scotland have a look at visitscotlands website to book ahead for places to stay and things to do they are more than helpfull with anything in scotland.Scotland has amazing fishing , camping, hill walking , mountain biking, out door sports all over so once again visitscotland website will help you in these areas.Just dont start drinking whisky untill youve had a look lol.:-).I say if you want tranqility beaches head up north to bettyhill cape wrath areas and you will see some of the best beaches and probaly have them all to yourself. So enjoy our beautiful country and now drink the whisky. Hick up lol

Just curious - why the high cost of living? Guess the demand for living there must be high to keep the price up? (Places with high costs of living in the US generally are desirable places to live for various reasons.)
I've always wanted to visit Scotland because half my family comes from there. The last of them came to N. America in the 19th century (no jobs then).
Thanks for the warning about high prices so I'll save up for my trip.

What's this about the transport system being few we have great transportations here I'm very thankful for our transport links you can get a buse for instance to anywhere all over Scotland plus over the ocean to the islands too stops on the way and buses come back and it's cheap as chips one pound to ten pounds return if you book in advance to go to Isle of Skye from Glasgow for example check up mega bus

Currency question. I'm planning a four week trip, England to Wales to Scotland and back to England and have read that English shop keepers decline currency issued by the Bank(s) of Scotland (possibly Wales too?). Since I will be likely hitting the ATM's on a regular basis don't want to spend the last leg of my trip with unusable currency. Thanks for any advice.

+mike naples hey just get english pounds cos we accept them but these nutters across the border do not accept bank of scotland even if they were the first to introduce paper money.why you think we want our independance

    • @DSQueenie
      @DSQueenie 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Wales has the same money as England. The Scottish notes thing used to be a problem but it is less of a problem now. Market stalls and small independent shops might, just might, be an issue but not so much anymore.
If you are worried use ATMs from English banks like Barclays or HSBC. They usually issue English notes.

Siol Alpin is a name given to many clans that are often of no direct connection. They are all supposed to have royal connections, being descended from Kenneth MacAlpine, the ancestor to the Kings of Scotland, and include such clans as the MacGregors, Grants, MacKinnons, MacQuarries, MacNabs, MacDuffies or MacFies and MacAulays. Although MacAlpine is today still a common Scottish surname there is little trace of any clan of the name.
