Thank you Rich! I had a closeness to The Butterfly, without ever meeting him in person. His first cousin, Gary was married to my first cousin, Celia while he was a professional. During his career, I would watch him on TV and wish to go to one of his fights. I was only a young kid at the peak of his career, but always got exclusive information from Cousin Gary about his opponents and his next big fight. He was as slick as they come. He didn't have much power, but his hand speed, switching stances, footwork and ring IQ gave people fits. I didn't know he had passed. Ironically, many years after he stopped fighting, I met his nephew (co worker) while talking about Boxing at work. He told me about his Uncle, so I inquired about his name. When he said "The Butterfly" I had to stop working for a few minutes. Lol. We talked about his family, my family (Cousin Celia) and the length of time he knew them. You have covered all of my (personal) connections to the Sport. Dan Bucceroni, Tyrone Crawley, and (if you did one) Bernard Hopkins. Obviously you see I am from the Philadelphia area, but I am watching these days from Costa Rica. Thank you for keeping these videos coming.
Tyrone was a good man. I interviewed him in 2004, and stayed in contact for over a dozen years afterward. Highest boxing IQ of any boxer I interviewed. For years after I interviewed him,we would trade emails and phone calls about upcoming fights. He knew styles so well. It seemed that he could pick winners of fights most could not. His work at the PAL was indeed very significant. Rich: You covered that perfectly. I would sometimes chat with him as he was leaving the PAL at night. He had a big impact on the community. He knew how to communicate.
@@RichtheFightHistorian Ty was a planner. He wanted to be in and out of the pro fight game in 6 years. Missed that, but not by much, if you look at actual start date and last fight. He taught planning to PAL kids. One of his favorite sayings was, "If you don't have a plan, you are planning to fail." He tried to steer them into valuing education. If not, he put an emphasis on trade schools or the military. Late in his career with the Philadelphia PD, he ran a hardwood floor business on the side. He taught some of the PAL kids how to do it, and how the business worked.
I thought Crawley was going to be too much for Blake before the fight. Good man, good fighter. I’m glad his son knows his Dad is remembered by so many. Thanks for keeping these fighters history alive in our memories.
I remember watching Tyrone Crawley on ESPN and NBC. He was one of the best lightweights of the 1980's, but unfortunately ran into a prime Livingstone Bramble. Didn't know he was a veteran and college graduate. Very impressive. RIP.
I'm glad his later life wasn't tragic like so many. He seems like a guy George Foreman would've liked a lot. Yet another bona fide fantastic production Rich; thanks man...

Brother Rich! This is a tremendous tribute to an almost forgotten warrior of the RING. I was deeply enthralled throughout. Crawley's eye's were constantly moving yet totally focused during the Pacheco interview. GOOD footwork, and genuinely a natural cerebral fighter. 28 years as a law enforcement officer is a good indicator of his morals and ethics. Great man Tyrone. Another great mini documentary Rich! Have you ever thought about Oba Carr as a subject for one of your pieces. I was trying to find out what had happened to him and all I managed to find were a couple of pictures of him in a wheelchair. It looks like he is suffering from CTE and has fallen on hard times. But other than that I don't know what has happened to him. Anyway, keep up the good work!

@@brucekielty8180 Man, that's sad to hear. He was a good fighter that just happened to be around when all the major 147lb belts were held by exceptional champions (Trinidad, Quartey and De La Hoya). Carr fought them all and dropped Tito early in their fight before getting stopped. Ike was too strong for him and he was stopped late on by Oscar. After three failed tries for the title he should have quit, but carried on another few years - as almost eveyone does - and ended up getting stopped twice more and losing a lopsided 10-round decision in his last fight. He started boxing at age 6 and had around 200 amateur fights before turning pro at 17. It's hard to say what specifically boxing-wise has led to his current physical state, but he's only 51 now and the photo of him in the wheelchair dates back to 2017.
Good job Rich and sorry I didn't commented sooner. Anyways, I shared my birthday with Crawley, who was a good boxer. I wish Crawley could have faced Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker. Keep it up Rich.

I thought Crawley would beat Bramble. He was a cutie with good speed and movement. Funny how Bramble seemed like THE lightweight after beating Mancini and after being destroyed by Rosario (the same weekend my favorite fighter of all time Donald Curry was upset!) he was never the same! I mean Curry as shot as he looked at times rebounded to win the WBC Super Welterweight title. Bramble, except for beating, yes beating Oba Carr never really threatened at any level again? Another great one RIch. Wasnt expecting to hear of his passing. He sounds like a very respectable man who cared for his community and. Also, very young. RIP

First got yo know about Crawley was his tittle fight with the then WBA light champion Livingston Bramble. Think Crawley got stopped very late in that fight 1986 Atlantic City 🥊
Jeez, the referee for the Bramble fight was awful. I remember watching this fight as an 11-year-old. Bramble was very strong. Crawley made the most of what he had which is all you can ask. A smart young man with a wise head on his shoulders.
A Mr. Gorman managed #1 ranked to Ray Mancini, Robin Blake. Gorman sacrificed Blake for a Network TV slot. I remember Stevie Cruz, Gene Hatcher and Troy Dorsey ALL burning out unexpectedly BECAUSE Gorman & team had them sparring 12 rounds a day in the Texas heat. BUT his putting Blake in with Tyrone, who was unbeatable at the time, was the biggest error he ever committed. Blake won't even talk boxing. Losing to Melvin Paul was no disgrace, nor was the Bramble fight.
You sure are right about Blake; by the time he got a title shot against Jimmy Paul he looked stale and used-up. I don't think Mancini's people wanted any part of Tyrone; Ray would have had trouble even finding him in the ring!

I thought Crawley would beat Bramble. He was a cutie with good speed and movement. Funny how Bramble seemed like THE lightweight after beating Mancini and after being destroyed by Rosario (the same weekend my favorite fighter of all time Donald Curry was upset!) he was never the same! I mean Curry as shot as he looked at times rebounded to win the WBC Super Welterweight title. Bramble, except for beating, yes beating Oba Carr never really threatened at any level again? Another great one RIch. Wasnt expecting to hear of his passing. He sounds like a very respectable man who cared for his community and. Also, very young. RIP

First got yo know about Crawley was his tittle fight with the then WBA light champion Livingston Bramble. Think Crawley got stopped very late in that fight 1986 Atlantic City 🥊
Jeez, the referee for the Bramble fight was awful. I remember watching this fight as an 11-year-old. Bramble was very strong. Crawley made the most of what he had which is all you can ask. A smart young man with a wise head on his shoulders.
A Mr. Gorman managed #1 ranked to Ray Mancini, Robin Blake. Gorman sacrificed Blake for a Network TV slot. I remember Stevie Cruz, Gene Hatcher and Troy Dorsey ALL burning out unexpectedly BECAUSE Gorman & team had them sparring 12 rounds a day in the Texas heat.
BUT his putting Blake in with Tyrone, who was unbeatable at the time, was the biggest error he ever committed. Blake won't even talk boxing.
Losing to Melvin Paul was no disgrace, nor was the Bramble fight.
You sure are right about Blake; by the time he got a title shot against Jimmy Paul he looked stale and used-up. I don't think Mancini's people wanted any part of Tyrone; Ray would have had trouble even finding him in the ring!
