I sparred Mr. Everett for the Escalera fight I was boxing With Anthony Two guns Fletcher and Mr. Duke Thompson was our coach and trainer Along with Mr Dick Turner a great human being and a middle weight contender and a boxing coach for most of the southwest Philly fighters in the 70s .....but I was scared and look real young for being 16 , I remember Mr Artie... Tyrone coach telling him not too hit us back , so I was only throwing Jabs at Mr Everett during my two rounds in the ring with him ,it was on a Saturday back in the seventies, but thanks for the memories ,and most are gone now.... but Mr Duke is still with us , along with Two Guns Fletcher🙏❤ I'm in my sixties now 🙏😔Peace to you all .

Wow, just finished watching this all the way through. I probably sound like a broken record but I always make sure to give you the comment of respect saying thank you for all the time, effort and exposure your giving the boxers, and the fan (me). Thank you Rich. This was a sad story in the end. Life is strange in many ways. We are dealt the cards of life and we make the decision we do. Sometime we look back and wonder how the hell we got here. Other times we look back with joy due to success and rising above struggle. Thanks for this story!

Hi John...I was also born in Germantown--@ Germantown Hospital on June 30, 1960. Everett was a great Philly fighter. It's always tough for me to watch when it ends on such a sad note for guys from where I'm born. Still, this was another excellent video!

Thanks again Rich for this one about Tyrone Everett..I actually read about him a few years ago, it was a on line article regarding famous but forgotten Phiilly fighters. Everett came up due to his sad ending but mainly because he was a brilliant boxer. I love the game but my god boxing can be so corrupt at times. In the article Escaleras management had already signed up for a fight against Arguello, so if true it explains why that judge scored the fight so bad. Even if it’s a straight pay off or a particular judge has it in for a particular boxer, it can just ruin a career. Some recommendations Rich if possible, Maybe a small documentary on Kirkland Laing a welterweight from the Uk who boxed in the 80s and 90s. He got a famous win over Duran. Also one of my all times favourites the brilliantly and entertaining Emmanuel Augustas. I know he is more recent but what fighter, took on anyone at any time. Many thanks for these superb docs with articulated narration Rich.

I really believe rocky took a bit from that fight not just chuck webber.

Woooow, amazing work Rich, this one brought back memories because me and My Cousin "Andre Haddock" both trained under Jimmy "Slim" Arthur. Slim had posters all over The gym of Tyrone, I never knew why and never asked. My Cousin Andre ended up turning Pro and did pretty well for himself, me, I almost ended up like Tyrone until I joined the Marines in "89". Never knew at the time that I was being trained by the trainer of Tyrone Everett. Jimmy was your typical old school trainer, who believed I should be thrown in the river because I was a southpaw, lmao.
He came to San Francisco to fight Ray Lunny Jr. it was a split decision. The judge that voted for Ray, Tony Bosnichi was not straight. Fight with the champion from Puerto Rico was a rip off. You have to look at his entire resume and realize he lost less than 10 rounds, if that. many. Solid vintage footage here. Rich comes with another gem.

I was ringside when Tyrone Everette fought our hometown fighter Ray Lunny lll. Everette was at a higher level. He had incredible hand speed. Probably the fastest fighter I ever saw.
I'm Dutch and in the first boxing magazine I've ever bought, around 1974, was an article about, Tyrone Everett. At the time my English wasn't too good so kept reading those magazines over and over. That made me kind of familiar with Tyrone Everett although it took years to understand what his story was really about.

I've been a few times in Maastricht and IMO that in the most beautiful part of this country. Hills, lots of old castle', rivers, etc.

The picture near the start of the video of Tyrone and his brother Mike with the big afros was actually a painting that was so lifelike it looked like a photograph. It was reproduced in The Ring Magazine at the time. Can't remember the name of the artist, but the guy was a genius. Thanks for the excellent documentary.
While I certainly believe Everett, if he had lived, would have certainly won a decision over Escalera down in Puerto Rico had they fought in June of 1977. Tyrone would not have had it easy knowing that the junior lightweight division was about to become highly contested with Alexis Argüello, Boza-Edwards, Navarrete, Chacon, and Limon rising in the ranks. I see Everett with mixed results and eventually moving up to lightweight with better opportunities entering the 1980s. Sadly, we will never know how truly great Tyrone Everett could of been, and even more tragic the missed opportunities in terms of great fights that would have gotten him there.
This is great. Saw him fight 4 times in Philly and completely outclassed all 4. Harold Lederman said the Escalera decision was the worst he had ever seen. AP: 146-139 Everett, UPI: 146-141 Everett. Going to watch now thanks to Rich.

Back in that era Philadelphia was one of the hottest areas for top boxers. Here in the SF Bay Area we had some top fighters too. Our Jimmy “Bayview Blaster” Lester went to Philadelphia and got stopped by their “Bad” Benny Brisco. But we got a little revenge on them when our hard punching Nate Collins went to Philly and got up off the floor to stop their killer Eugene “Cyclone” Hart in a big upset. Unfortunately there was very little TV coverage back then.
I remember that fight well. And sadly, the same damn thing STILL happens all the time in boxing. Personally, I think it may be getting worse. And, for some guys, like Tyrone, it's their only shot to become someone. And a bunch of idiots take it away. I remember Dave Tiberi slapping James Toney around and being robbed. That was his shot and they took it. Who remembers Dave Tiberi? No one, the same with Tyrone.
Escalera which one of the most humble I'm booked and good natured champs of Puerto Rico he admitted that Everett had beat Em and that is A W in any boxer's mind. Salute to Puerto Rico's finest

The Justice system is getting just as screwed up here in America with lazy, corrupt judges and prosecutors not giving families Justice or protecting communities.
Everette's record was impressive, & going by his one fight here on You Tube, Everette had a superior jab, was a good counterpuncher, & knew how to shorten his punches in close. Only 5' 5" but he had a 71" reach (just one inch shorter than Errol Spence) A very classy talent. Anybody able to upload the Everette vs Escalera title fight?

Tyrone and my brother Caveman Lee use too jog together out Fairmount Park in the 70s.. I had pics of him but don't know what happened to them..

I had heard of Alfredo Escalera. Famous in latin channels. Everett looked very good against him. Bad company never ends well. Rest in peace. Warrior..

Back in that era Philadelphia was one of the hottest areas for top boxers. Here in the SF Bay Area we had some top fighters too. Our Jimmy “Bayview Blaster” Lester went to Philadelphia and got stopped by their “Bad” Benny Brisco. But we got a little revenge on them when our hard punching Nate Collins went to Philly and got up off the floor to stop their killer Eugene “Cyclone” Hart in a big upset. Unfortunately there was very little TV coverage back then.

I remember that fight well. And sadly, the same damn thing STILL happens all the time in boxing. Personally, I think it may be getting worse. And, for some guys, like Tyrone, it's their only shot to become someone. And a bunch of idiots take it away. I remember Dave Tiberi slapping James Toney around and being robbed. That was his shot and they took it. Who remembers Dave Tiberi? No one, the same with Tyrone.

Everette's record was impressive, & going by his one fight here on You Tube, Everette had a superior jab, was a good counterpuncher, & knew how to shorten his punches in close.
Only 5' 5" but he had a 71" reach (just one inch shorter than Errol Spence)
