American Bluebird builds nest masterpiece

- Eastern Bluebirds typically nest in natural cavities, but they often use nest boxes. Building their nest can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on climate and availability of resources.
This footage was captured in our nest box located in Virginia, USA, during the Spring breeding season of 2022. The time-lapse shows how the female constructs her nest from the beginning to the end by using straw and twigs. She builds it up layer by layer so that it is deep enough to excavate a small cup shape to hold the eggs. Most Bluebirds will lay a clutch of between 2 and 7 eggs and can have multiple broods in one breeding season.
The female laid five eggs in this nest, and we expect the first ones to hatch during mid-May.

When I was a child I would fantasize about being a human with wings who lived in giant trees and made nests to live in. I miss having a vivid imagination, I could totally escape reality, but the fact that I don't need to escape reality anymore is a blessing.

I had have imaginations like that. And I also used to want to be very tiny (like the "Borrowers" movie) so I could explore small spaces with other tiny people.

I wanted wings so bad as a kid. Birds became a huge interest of mine as a got older. Sometimes I still wish I could fly like I wanted to as a kid. I miss how vivid my imagination was. It almost felt real
I’m soooo going to be mindful and put bird houses in the yards going forward. This is too cute!
My dad used to take down birds nest then I showed him this video not only did he realize how long this process takes he realized this is a bird trying to find a safe place to stay for the bird and babies now he doesn’t take them down.
The nest in their bluebird house is so clean and nicely put together!! No wonder the babies grow up healthy and safe so they can develop into adulthood. Soon they will leave their nest and explore the outdoors in search of mates to start their own family.

This is absolutely nothing compared to the bluebirds around my house, I wish this was a forum I could upload pictures, too!! I had a bluebird build an amazing nest on my back deck, and it wasn't inside a box or anything with walls, so she had to build it in a round formation without the added benefit of 4 walls to do most of the work.... It has a super-sturdy mud-like core, with straw just like this as the main "nest" part, but it's just such a sturdy and solid creation, nothing's going to hurt that nest unless another animal destroys it or something.... I'm just impressed with how she made it so solid and perfect, but without anything to assist her in making it round, she had to use mud to mortar it and then weave the straw in and out of it....
That's really amazing how they have awareness to craft such intricate little homes!
@@PRiMO585 - Definitely!! And I forgot to mention that we were also having record heat those couple days she made it, it was literally 115 degrees out!!
I have a bluebird trail on my street we all have acreas..never seen inside like this. Joy filled, I believe in what we are doing. Daily acreage is gone in my area..400 homes on little lots. It's like a city is growing up overnight..Fl

I watched a bird build a nest on my air conditioner in Minnesota it was so cool..waited until it got dark to go out on the balcony to check it out..they build it all day...
