Martin Guitar Rescue

  • Heights Guitars’ tech, Kevin, said he needed my help. He was fixing the binding on his sister-in-law’s Martin newer acoustic guitar, that had started to pull away from the body at the waist. He had heated, pressed glued and tape the binding back into place. The horror appeared when he removed the tape. The heat had softened the top finish and when he pulled the tape up some of the finish came with it. I had never tried any thing like this and I was a bit nervous, it’s a two thousand dollar guitar. But I figured I really couldn’t mess it up more than it is.

Interesting! Your channel is like mine, a little glass, a little music, random other stuff. More people should do that! I also build guitars, I'm working on a My Little Pony electric.

Thanks! And I agree with you that more people should have a wider range of opinions for their content. I’ve repaired a few guitars but haven’t built any yet. I hope you post the build process. Thanks again! Cheers! Patrick

I just bought a martin guitar and was told buy the store that martin has a lifttime waranty. So why not send it in for repair directly at martin?
    Thanks!

Funny you mention that. When Kevin was asking me if there was anything I could do, he said that he should have told his sister-in-law to have Martin fix it. But, having been a certified Martin repair guy for years and having done countless binding repairs he didn’t hesitate to help. He speculates that they must have changed the formula of finish used because he’s never had that happen before. Thanks for the comment. Cheers! Patrick

Martins are now a massed produced product with poor quality issues....😐

With a little research Kevin found that out. Martin is no longer run by a member of the family as of a couple of years ago. And the quality has dropped dramatically. The binding and top finish issue seem to be something that is happening more and more. So much so that many repair shops won’t touch them. Thanks for the comment. Cheers! Patrick
